I think that Marvel was still figuring out the type of stories they wanted to tell. I think they didn't really start to click until maybe 1966. The early Thor, Iron Man and Giant man stories were awful.

OTOH, Don Heck looks pretty good with Chic Stone inking him.

I've always been a Don Heck fan. Not me. Thought his work was always lacking. Of course he was competing with the likes of Kirby and Buscema on those books. I feel that inking himself didn't help, even though he preferred to do that. In recent years I've come to appreciate his abilities more, especially on none super hero material

I guess he was the guy that was doing the book when I started to love the book.

#9 Spider-Man /Quicksilver Amazing Spider-man # 71
Sorry, no way that Spider-man could stop Pietro this way. I thought that Quicksilver saw everyone as statues because of his speed. He would see Spidey sticking his arm out. Calling Confessor ! Stat!

This is my look at the following combat matches in comics and just had to shake my head. There's just no way these battles end like they did. # 1Batman beats SupermanSuperman just has too many powers and abilities to be beaten by Batman. He could have fried him with his heat vision from a distance. Yeah--I've always felt 75% of Superman's problems could be solved by heat vision. The other thing he doesn;t take advantage of is flying up a few miles and dropping people. He should be able to calculate a height that will disable--but not kill--someone. For creatures like Doomsday, toss 'em into the sun.

My favorite though is Peter Parker (at least the original Ditko design) landing two supermodels in Gwen and MJ. Or every super-scientist in the Marvel and DC universes looking like Brad Pitt on a good day. The /Ditko-era Parker never dated / had a romantic relationship with either Gwen or Mary Jane. His dating options jumped to that level as soon as the Romita era started.

I feel that inking himself didn't help, even though he preferred to do that. Agreed; his work was the polar opposite of dynamic--the very thing superhero books needed. His rough, sketchy Avengers was only tolerable thanks to the stories. Once John Buscema took the wheel, The Avengers became one of the best-looking superhero books of the 1960s.

Batman beats the Hulk
No. Just, No. The Hulk has survived punches from Thor and the Abomination but is hurt by a kick from Batman? No way. So true but I love that art!

I love how we nitpick battles like these:)
Personally, I view it like sports. Team A is clearly better than Team B. Team A is 10-1 and Team B is 1-10. But Team B got their one win against Team A. Against the odds, the fact they were a weaker team. It happens. Certainly not all the time but it does.
Superheroes are, for the most part, still humanistic in nature. They can get caught up in emotion, not think straight or simply have a bad day. And those days result in losing fights they never should have. I apply that to all the scenarios here (well except for Marvel/DC crossovers which are just meant for fun so anything goes and Squirrel Girl which is meant to be humourous).
