Ugh that is the Captain Marvel I don't even consider real. Absolutely terrible. Also, why does Dr. Fate look like Stan Lee??

Yeah. Batman is almost too damn ripped to fit on the cover of his comic! I think it's an original idea, very well executed. (I will defend Frank Miller's stuff all day.) Can you defend Dark Knight Returns 2? I loved it. I was shocked that not everyone loved it. Kirby's "make it big" aesthetic taken to it's absolute extremes and filtered through trashy pulp novels? That is everything I want in superhero comics. I haven't particularly cared for anything Miller's done after DKSA, though.

What's sad is that it's so easy to come up with awful covers. How about this monstrosity? What the hell is going on here? Love Superman's generic expression that captures so vividly how one would look when thinking, "I'm upset that my head just popped off." Horrible "trade dress," which is comic book-ese for graphic nightmare; the ugliest possible shade of orange as a background color; those lines between the segments of Superman's neck: what are they? Blood? Sparklers? Some kind of magical after-effect of disembodied hand-squeezing? I love that cover so very very much!!! It made my list on the Classic Christmas covers. Yeah, tough. Oh, and this just in: There's no Santa Claus.

Found this...wanted to burn all existing copies. The background isn't terrible but Thor is just...I can't even explain.

"Of All-Time"? Perhaps not, but this has to be the worst cover Brian Bolland ever did.
What's wrong with constipated Superman? He's business in front, party in back. (I think Bolland is channelling Supes' rage for that mullet.)

^ Little known fact, that is not smoke or clouds in the background but actually wisps of Superman's mullet in the distance. Yes...it was that long.

Just to prove that bad covers are not limited to the superhero genre, or to 1990s onward:

I will agree that while the story is really good, that above cover is awkward as hell. That being said, there is something about it that still makes it work for me personally. Yeah. Batman is almost too damn ripped to fit on the cover of his comic! I think it's an original idea, very well executed. (I will defend Frank Miller's stuff all day.) I can accept the cover more now than when it first came out; still, it doesn't fit stylistically with the other issues.

But I do have some grudging respect for Tony's more, err, conventional work. His notorious Dell "Dracula" actually has some damned memorable "pop art" panels that have stuck with me forever.

It's funny you should mention this comic, as it contains what I consider the Worst Comic Book Panel Of All-Time! (another thread drift?). I'm not just talking about the quality of the drawing, but the whole concept, of shaking a building to get a couple of goons out the window and onto a tree… hilarious.

He's upset that no matter how hard he tries, his long wavy hair still isn't as long and wavy as Wonder Woman's. BTW, how long has this WW+Superman romance thing been going on? For some reason I thought it was a relatively recent trend, but this cover must date from the early 90s, by the look of it.

Can you defend Dark Knight Returns 2? Well, I can't because I haven't read it. I always try to find the aristotelian golden mean, and after browsing issue one, I couldn't even decide if it was another masterpiece, or pure crap. To this day, I haven't made up my mind, to take on that challenge.
