The ratings continued to stagnate due to the change in broadcasting hours in the previous work, “Kosoku Sentai Turbo Ranger,” and various new innovations were introduced in this work in an attempt to revive the series. However, the effect was not strong enough,[24] and the 26th episode broke the lowest rating record of the time, 1.8%. As is the fate of long-term series, the series itself had reached an extreme level of boredom, which also contributed to the decline in viewer ratings. In fact, there was a widespread feeling among Toei staff at the time that “the Sentai series was just a matter of course, just like air” [3], and Soda, the main writer, said in an interview that he wrote this work while suffering from wounds all over his body [more information required] [notes 36]. Shinichiro Shirakura, a Toei employee, recently testified that “from ‘Five Man’ to ‘Dinosaur Sentai Jyuranger,’ the Sentai series was produced every year with the intention of being terminated. The series struggled to get off to a good start due to a sense of rut in the development of the series, which was a result of the literary style aimed at a younger age group and enemies that had a strong sense of comedy. However, the second half of the season showed a sharp upturn, with the highest viewer rating of 13.3 percent in the middle of the third cool when the first captain, Chevalier, made his appearance[24][89]. Toei producer Takeyuki Suzuki said that through this case, he realized the importance of exploring new directions when things do not go as expected, and that if he had stuck to the initial setting, the series might have ended[24].

Toy sales were also poor. At the time, the Metal Hero series was recovering from the crisis that had doomed the series around 1987, and that year's “Special Police Winspector” earned the same level of sales as this work[90]. Nonaka Tsuyoshi, an employee of Bandai at the time, speculated that the reason for the struggling sales was that the product lineup was a continuation of the previous year's lineup, while the teacher setting and other elements were designed with the parents' generation in mind, who disliked violent programs [37].

Voice actors and actresses such as Yukari Fukui[91] and Kanae Oki have publicly stated that they are fans of this work. Manga artist Akira Toriyama was watching this work with his children at the time, and commented in a comment at the end of a volume of “Weekly Shonen Jump” that “I am more absorbed in it than my children.”[92][93] He also mentioned “the short air time of ‘Five Man’” in his manga[94].
