"The Dark Phoenix Saga" has just won the poll as Marvel's best of all time.

I gave it an 8: it has a good beat and you can dance to it.

I hate spectrum questions, but gave it an 8.
I do think some elements work better than others and that the ending is rather shaky, though better than the original, intended ending. Jean defeated and depowered seems like a cop out. That said, I like the build into it, during the Proteus storyline and I like the issues surrounding Kitty. When we get into the Hellfire Club HQ, I think it starts to wobble and starts losing something for me. Some really great stuff with Wolverine, but the rest not as much. When Jean loses it, it gets interesting again; but, again, more at the start than the end.

I'm going with a 9. People can talk smack about it but try writing a storyline like that, with an ending like that, and getting people to care about it decades later. I started reading the X-Men in '88 and it was still relevant in the storylines then. Jean has been alive for however many years, but it's still moving. It's an iconic storyline.

I grudgingly gave it a 6. I think the worst thing about it is that so many people--pros and fans--saw it and said "Now this is what all comics should be like!"

Didn’t do much for me. Far better X-storylines, in my opinion. A 4 seems too generous, but a 3 or lower would seem mean-spirited.

4 is below average. You mean that most comics are better?

For me, there are far better X-Men storylines. I re-read this a few years ago. It’s iconic and earth-shattering, but it left me feeling cold.
Numbers can be hard to quantify. One man’s score of 4 could be quantified as below average while another man’s score of 4 could be considered average. 1 is obviously worst, 10 is obviously best, but the numbers between can be more nuanced.

Yes, I got that part, but what about in general? X-Men aren't the only comics on the rack, they certainly weren't in 1980.

In general, and it’s always gonna be subjective, there are Marvel storylines I’d rate more than this.

I gave it a 5. I'm a die-hard Claremont X-Men fan, but that storyline seemed awkwardly paced, as if Claremont wasn't really sure what he wanted to do, and so the thing limped along awkwardly and then jumped to an arbitrary climax far too quickly. I adore what the Dark Phoenix Saga did for the X-Men franchise in its aftermath, and the concept itself was very powerful, but as a stand-alone story, I think it was problematic at best.

It looks like I'm not getting my question across, let's take the month of September as an example. How many of these were better than X-Men?: That's not really the same question as what you asked. Do you want us to rate The Dark Phoenix Saga on its own merit or compare just the final chapter to what else was on the market in the same month in which it was published? Your OP implied the former.

I can’t really answer it well because it’s apples and oranges. As regards those other comics on sale that month, I believe it’d be futile to compare that month’s MAN-THING and SUPER SPIDEY STORIES with “The Dark Phoenix Saga”. I can only reall think about how I feel about that saga on its own merits. I may not have even read most of those other comics on sale that month.

Y’all are bashing Dark Phoenix and saying there’s better X-Men storylines, but aren’t stating what those better storylines are. So, what are the better storylines in X-Men that beat Dark Phoenix?

I mean this with absolute respect, but is the question in relation to other comics of the time, or about other X-storylines? I was basing my answer purely on the OP.
As you have asked, though, I would say I much prefer the likes of “Days of Future Past” and “The Age of Apocalypse” (which I never expected to enjoy!), along with a personal favourite “Mutant Massacre”.
