Emotional investment aside, do you think Giraud had beauty as a goal when drawing that series? I don't know if he had beauty as a goal, but he probably had details and realism. It is beautiful in my opinion The designer of the SR71 Blackbird was once asked "Why does it look the way it does, like no other plane?" His answer was "Well, if you are going to design something to be functional, you might as well make it beautiful, while you're at it."

As mentioned in the "Meanwhile" thread on Saturday, I attended the stripped-down, outdoors Three Rivers Comicon that afternoon with my daughters. I'll be posting more about the day as a whole in that thread, but I wanted to share my purchases from the day here. Everything will be grouped by booth where I bought it. First buy of the day, each of these for $1. The guy who was selling these had sort of a hodge-podge of items, not really focused on comics specifically (he had about six short boxes, one of "as marked" and the other five of $1 books), but also some toys, Pop Figures, etc. Just across the way from that first purchase was a guy with a much more robust comic selection. About 20 long boxes of "as marked" books, good wall stock (early X-Men, a Star Wars #1, nice collection of Silver Age DC), and some discount books, which is where I got these at 3 for $5: Next guy I bought from was someone that I used to play Magic: The Gathering against about 20 years ago at a store long-since-closed. He makes custom coasters from old MTG cards and comic book pictures (he buys collections and cuts out large panels from junk books), but at this show, he only had comics with him, about 20 short boxes. Picked up these also at 3 for $5: Next guy I came across had about as nice a selection as the second guy I mentioned above, but what really caught my eye was a sign on one of the long boxes that read "New Western Collection", from which I got these books. All were "as marked", but combined they were only $18 (average of $3 each): Lastly, came across one last guy as we were making our way out, and he had probably the most books out of any dealer there (including the host store, which was located right across the parking lot, but who seemed to only bring old toys, Pop Figures, and about three boxes of Vargas prints that were conspicuously angled so that the naked women could be seen by all walking by). Probably 40 long boxes, big display of really good wall stock, and varying deals (a number of $2 boxes, $3 boxes, and "as marked" as well). From him, I made my biggest purchase of the day in terms of books (10 in total) and money (all of them were from the $3 boxes, so $30):

Cool books The Captain. Looks like you're filling in the Flash V.1 series.

Cool books The Captain. Looks like you're filling in the Flash V.1 series. Thanks! I buy them when I find them for less than $3 apiece, but there's no real concerted effort to put together the run. I've always liked the Rogues, so any issues with them get grabbed on sight.

I buy them when I can too, but won’t pay more than a buck. My cap used to be $1 and then $2, but as I move further back in the series, it's harder to find them that inexpensively. I figure since I'm only buying four new books a month and my Want List is almost non-existent (and devoid of high-end books entirely), I can up it to $3, especially if any of the classic Rogues are featured.

I'm a little ambivalent about the Kull series after the outstanding Severins' run. I still like the series, but feel it should have been just a bit better than it was. Ditto. The main problem I saw was that succeeding writers all had their different vision of what the future would entail, each coming up with auguries and prophecies showing how Kull would eventually return to power... none of which came to fruition in the manner described. It felt as if there were a lot of seeds planted for future stories, and all of them were promptly forgotten. I think #11 is just as good as (if very different from) Marie and John's issues, but immediately thereafter the inking simply ruined the idiosyncratic Ploog style. Mike is a bit like Ernie Colon, in a certain way: when he inks himself or is matched with an appropriate inker, his art looks brilliant; with an inker who's not compatible, it looks downright ugly. (Some mismatches, like Buscema-Alcala, actualy give great results, and others are simply all right... but I never saw such a result with Ploog or Colon. It feels as if it's either a great success or a dismal failure). The end of the run consists in dropping the ongoing plot and all its mysterious aspects (how did Atlantis become an advanced civilization? Why did it disappear?) and giving Kull a new temporary girlfriend before he regains his throne by accident. Not bad individual issues, perhaps, but a less than satisfying way to conclude the series. Well spoken, by Valka and Hotath!

Makes sense. My cap has gone up. I will pay the current cover price on a new comic for a nice bronze or silver age book. I don't generally look in non discount tables for books like the Flash , Superman etc.

The best version of "KULL" I ever saw was the movie with Kevin Sorbo. It so PERECTLY encapsulated everything about the character, there was no need to ever do a sequel. (Although, since I enjoyed it so much, I almost wish there had been.) It's my favorite REH film by a mile. It even told a "voyage to the north pole" story better than the 1977 SINBAD film had.

Among others, I got these two today, bought on the 18th (posted on the 20th), received on the 26th via Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed + Correos. English eBid seller: Most people won't consider the first one a classic, but it's over 25 years old, so...

Me trying to get some culture... Some DC including some Love comics. I Blame Crimebuster for getting me started on these broken heart sagas. Secret Hearts # 116 looks to be a Gene Colan cover.

Nice to see some good books in that lot, ICC.
So you found the real Starfire... yep, it's pretty cheesy, but still fun.
And nothing beats those issues of Superboy featuring Superbaby stories.

I dislike Sorbo so much that it spoiled the movie for me. Plus I tink he has the wrong look and screen-persona for the character, apart from my personal distaste for him.

Is the real Starfire the one with the cape in #6 ? I definitely like that look better than the one-legged body-suit.
