I have one issue of the 1970s Starfire that I got for a very low bid on eBay. It’s definitely worth what I paid for it,
I love Classics Illustrated. I bought a bunch of the miniature reprints they put out in the 1990s (I think). Hamlet. Moby Dick. Crime and Punishment.
The only one I bought that I had never read was Ivanhoe. I eventually read Ivanhoe. Read the book. It’s structure is so bizarre. And I’ve since become a big fan of Scott.
Sometimes I think about getting a copy of the Classics Illustrated version of The Scottish Chieftains. Just for kicks

I didn’t know until I read it that that Superboy issue is the first appearance of Lana Lang as insect queen.

I have one issue if that Starfire series... maybe two. I should get those. So many random Sword and Sorcery titles in the 70s!

Valley of the Worm was one of my favorite Marvel REH stories. It was the only time I really liked Chau on Kane. I never like Chau on any artist for Conan.

So while out and about today, I stopped at one of the longest tenured comic shops in the area, Bookery Fantasy. They also deal in pulps, vintage paperbacks, movie posters, lobby cards, etc. I had a small stack of vintage paperbacks that I was moving on form and was trading them in, and picked up a few comics while I was there. They have a second store across the street that is their gaming store, and that has a bargain comic basement with maybe 10-15k comics for $1 each. While in the main store/collectibles shop, they also had 2 long boxes of new dollar bin stuff that was available there for a couple days before going across the street to the basement. I found some stuff in the dollar bins and in the bargain boxes in the collectibles stores (everything in those was $5.95 or below, most $5 a pop for things from the 40s-present. The trade credit covered the bulk of what I got from the dollar bins, and I used a little of the war chest form selling the vintage rpg stuff to pick up a few books. What would any haul be for me without a red dress, cover so let's start there... Unusual Tales #44 from 1964... next book also has a red dress, but it's Toth so I was getting it red dress or no, Jonny Thunder #1... no red dress here (it's pink too bad), but knocking another I, Vampire issue of House of Mystery off the list... and then a quartet of Rock issues form Our Army at War... that was it form the bargain boxes, the rest were dollar books, which I'll put in the next post... -M

The copy I bought had water damage and the covers were damaged. I might keep an eye out for a better copy. This was an excellent story.

Out of the two new dollar bin boxes on the collectibles side I got the following... a trio of issues of Mighty Comics... a quartet of random Charlton and Gold Key stuff... a quartet of issues of Legends of the DC Universe to take off my list... and a quartet of books probably aimed at younger readers, but I liked 'em (I had the Spidey Super Stories issue as a kid so snagged that one out of nostalgia, I generally don't pick up Spidey stuff any more) and across the street I got a small batch of books, mostly more recent stuff... one of the First Wave issues of Spirit I needed... one of the Frazetta inspired issues from Image... and a passel of issue of the third Dark Horse Presents series (many featuring installments of Carla Speed McNeil's Finder) and that's that. Filled in some holes and found a few fun books, so not a bad trip to the shop. -M

I have to vacation in your neck of the woods and visit these stores.

Nice pickups, @mrp. I especially dig the Laff-A-Lympics and the Hong Kong Phooey!

Nice pickups, @mrp. I especially dig the Laff-A-Lympics and the Hong Kong Phooey! I'll pick up almost any Hanna Barbera based comic if the price is right, and at a buck, the price was right. -M

Oooh! Didn't realize it, but apparently Mike Grell did a Tarzan serial that ran in that third volume of Dark Horse Presents. Was going through cataloguing the issues and saw it in #10.

Visited a few of my local shops today, came away with the usual mish-mash of run-fillers, but a handful are exceptional.
Nice copy of Daredevil #5, which leaves me needing only six more to complete the entire run (1, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 16).
Very nice 6.0-ish copy of ASM #70, with a beautiful Romita cover. Another pickup in my quest to complete the DC 1971-72 25-cent issues, this time it's Batman #236, with a solid Neal Adams cover.
An absolutely stunning copy of Modeling with Millie #50-- this one is clean enough to have been a file copy. 8.0-8.5 grade range on this one... for 5 bucks. Other winners include Madhouse #95, which is from the brief 3-issue run with Gray Morrow artwork... and Basil Wolverton and Sergio Aragones at their weirdest in Plop #1, a passel of Hulk Annuals, a super-clean copy of Freedom Fighters #1 (already have this, but it for the price I couldn't pass it up).
Rounding out this haul is a trio of G.I. Combat dollar comics, some Marvel odds & ends and a nice copy of B&B #200-- I already have the newsstand edition, this one is the direct edition, and I got it for a song.

Nice to see the covers. What was DC thinking when they produced PLOP ? They weren't really known for their "Mad" type humor comics . It had cool Sergio Aragones bits but it wasn't really great.
