First up is Generation X #1 by Marvel. I will admit to buying 10 of these.
*GASP*
You speculated? Who would have known? Ha. I will admit to getting caught up in the excitement of the 90’s.

More special covers. I'm not sure where i got this. I want to say it was mailed to me by Marvel. But anyway, I really liked the Topps superhero line. This was the dreadful spinoff from the FF titles in the 90's headlined by an artificially grown-up Franklin Richards.

I think the true gimmick is that hairstyle. Jeezum crow.

Reminds me of this panel, from Jon Bogdanove and Terry Austin (I believe it was used in Classic X-Men)....

That Fantastic Force was pretty bad. Not the cover so much but the contents. I read, I think, the first three issues and was done. But I do remember that cover. However I do not remember the New Warriors cover, but I do own it. I have a streak of the first 40 or so issues before I have a break in succession. Not so much a gimmick cover, but this was the issue I found in a dollar bin that got me interested in reading New Warriors ....

I’m closing in on completing the 75 issue run. I need around 7-8. ( damn bad record keeping)

I hate die-cut covers on books, they always get caught on stuff and torn.

In the wild west called the 90's, Malibu started their own superhero line. They had George Perez do a wrap around chromium cover for the Genesis # 0 issue. Too bad it was colored with dark hues.

Some more Superman covers with foil and embossed. Seems like Superman might have had the most gimmick covers in DC.

So much of the 1990s comic industry needs to be erased. How any publisher believed foil / holographic / zero-numbered covers was a good idea must have been shooting up with some particularly strong drugs. I remember that time so well, and just walking by any gimmick cover in sight. Thankfully, my favorite limited series of the decade--Marvels and Kingdom Come--were not subjected to that crap.

I remember that time so well, and just walking by any gimmick cover in sight. Thankfully, my favorite limited series of the decade-- Marvels and Kingdom Come--were not subjected to that crap. Marvels #1 had some type of clear plastic on the cover that acted like a dust cover. I thought that was gimmicky. The big 2 got wiser and started to release regular covers as well as the enhanced versions. They were usually the regular price, while the special covers were 1 buck or more.
