I recently heard a podcast about Gimmick covers of the 90's. Some ( or many) members here see that time as a dark age for comics , but it was fun for a while to buy and enjoy the various gimmick covers. From foil to die cut to Holograms, they were obviously a hook to get the buyer to get them all. I am going to share some of my covers and favorites. First up is Generation X #1 by Marvel. I will admit to buying 10 of these. I love the complete wrap around chromium cover. I think it was the first of is kind. Also, most of these pics are from my own collection.

Next up is the one that started off the " get rich" mentality to these covers. I bought 6 of these and sold them off for a paltry 6 dollars each. I kept this one complete with the polybag cover and swag that was included inside. I misplaced the arm band and poster but you can see them in this vid that I recorded with our own Crimebuster.

Somewhere in my collection (although 'accumulation' would be a better description), I have a copy of Protectors #5, the infamous 'bullet hole' (sorry, 'forcebeam' hole) cover:

I just re acquired that issue. That was such a bad series.

Oddly enough - given how few single issues I currently own (they all more or less fit into a single shortbox) - I do have one of these, i.e., Spectacular Spider-man #189:

This was my first (of many) gimmick covers I bought. I actually subscribed to three titles from Marvel at the time to get a uncut cover of it and have it framed and hanging on the wall.

My favorite as a kid was Wolverine issue 50: It was a die cut cover that looked like a file folder slashed by Wolverine's claws (because the issue was about implanted memories).

The acetate wraparound cover on Doom 2099 #29 (hard to picture but when you see/feel in person you know it's not paper!):

So bad in all respects. When the say "not your parents...", they probably mean Silver Age kids like me. And no, this was so much worse than those FFs. Pockets, big guns and the Thing with a helmet. Awful.

In its death throes, Continuity tried some really odd gimmick covers, such as this one, featuring an autostereogram (a.k.a. a 'magic eye' image). Unfortunately, this particular gimmick was entirely wasted on me as my astigmatism means I can't see the images hidden in autostereograms.

The Bongo Comics Simpsons-related books had the only gimmick usage I ever thought was fun, as they had a reason for being there, such as the glow-in-the-dark cover, for Radioactive Man #1.... Or the chromium vat on Bartman #1 If you are going to talk Continuity, you have to mention the tyvek covers.
