Day Two Response and Wrap—Up
As others have sort of said, while I might not love (or sometimes even like) the art and writing of Jack Kirby, his ideas and energy and imagination make reading his work a joy, and put him in my list. He created one big two universe, much of the other, tons of other stuff, and inspired and continues to inspire generations of creators.
Sandman is my absolute favorite comic of all-time. And my entire life, I’ve said things like “the best comics could be drawn in stick figures only and they’d still be the best comics, it’s all about the writing.” So obviously this made Neil Gaiman an easy add to my list. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I’ve changed over the decades and that this is a visual medium. I’m not opposed to having ‘just’ writers on my list, but I’m not adding one yet. As much as I love Sandman, his other comic writing has been merely good to very good for me. The writing half of one series, even my favorite, isn’t enough to make my list.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby

Today we’re going to France. Are Moebius or Tardi on your list?

I adore Moebius, he was the first artist who really broke me out of the "traditional superhero" art mold in the 80's and made me realize there are other worlds of graphic storytelling out there. His aesthetic style combined with his staggering fantastical creativity makes him a giant amongst giants in my mind. I feel sad that I do not choose him in my top 10, but the reason is only that 10 is such a crowded space and there are others I have a stronger connection to.
I do not know Tardi, but I will go explore!

Today we’re going to France. Are Moebius or Tardi on your list? No. I honestly don't know the work of either man well enough to have an opinion.
Cei-U! I summon the Gallic greats!

Ditto, though for both, what I've seen I like.

Tardi's a no just because I've never read anything he's done; I have seen examples of his work, though, and think it's quite nice.
Giraud/Moebius I love, both as just an artist and also writer/artist. However, I'm not sure I could say he's in my top ten when I think of all of the other creators whose work I like.

Neither are on my list because I've read very very little by either.

There would be a few cartoonists on my list, but not one pure artist.

I've got nothing. I need to add some Mobius and Tardi to my April reading.

That's a No to both.
My opinion on Moebius might change if I ever get around to reading more of Blueberry, as I do enjoy my serious westerns. But his superhero stuff does nothing for me, probably because it all seems to be in the 'cosmic' sub-genre, and I'm more of 'street' level kind of guy.
I don't think I've read anything by Tardi.

Of the 10, only one is only a writer, and only one is primarily an artist (though he's written some stuff). The rest are what I'd call cartoonists.

No. But I don’t have experience reading much of their work.

I really only know Moebius from the Incal and Silver Surfer: Parable. I've tried to seek out more of his stuff, but it's challenging in America. The World of Edena has been on my Amazon wishlist for some time now.
I love his style, but I only understand his contributions as an artist. For me personally, what I care about most in comics are characters and ideas. Parable had both in spades, but how much of that was Lee and how much was Moebius? The Incal was gorgeous to look at, but it felt a little light on both characters and ideas. Maybe I read it at the wrong time and need to revisit it.
And I have never heard the name Tardi until this moment. I'd love more info.

I remember in '87 when the Marvel/Epic line Moebius graphic novels came out (Upon a Star, Arzach, Airtight Garage, etc.) and seeing those at my LCS (and all the buzz on them). It might have been right place, right time, for me, but those were my gateway to Moebius. All of a sudden that year I'm reading those, titles like Concrete, and all this other stuff I never would have been interested in just a couple of years back. Fun times.

Moebius was amazing but he doesn't play a significant enough part in my comics reading to put him on the list.
I'm not really familiar with Tardi at all.
