Grindberg posted this today... as well as his first official sketch for the project... Grindberg has wrapped up his work on the Tarzan strip and this seems to be his next project. What it is or when it will be out, I don't know yet. here's an earlier Grindberg Conan piece... i'll be the first to admit, I hated Grindberg's 90s Marvel stuff, but he was doing an editorially requested style then, not his own natural style of drawing (something I didn't find out until much later). His later work on Tarzan and other stuff is amazing, and I am looking forward to seeing what this Conan project turns out to be. Also apparently DH is going to do a collection of his Tarzan stuff at some point in the near future too. This is one of the topics I have been following on the Swords of REH forums, but I know there are some Conan fans here who might also look forward to this project. -M

Grindberg has shown several Conan pieces on his Facebook page recently but I had no idea this was coming. Great news indeed! His work on the short-lived Conan the savage was very, very nice... quite a departure from his Neal Adams Clone period or his brief Mike Mignola inspired period. (MInd you, he did a bang-up job in Savage sword of Conan, back in the day). Since then, of course, he developed the great style prominently featured in the Tarzan strip, reminding me of both Frazetta and Wrightson. Thanks for the heads up, mrp, I'm definitely looking forward to this!!!

Any time that Roy Thomas wants to write Conan, I'm all in favor.

Any time that Roy Thomas wants to write Conan, I'm all in favor. He did a 12 issue run for Dark Horse-Road of Kings I believe it was called, that filled the publishing gap between the end of Truman's Conan the Cimmerian run and Wood's Conan the Barbarian run. I only read the first couple of issues (I was out of comics when it came out) and it was only ok, not the usual Roy great Conan stuff, and the art was kind of meh, but I am optimistic this one will be better as Grindberg is bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the project. -M

You could see Grindberg had a good photo-realistic style but was kind of rough.
Over time artists develop more of their own style and get more comfortable in their own skin.
I can see a few different influences with this image, and like it.

Sounding good! Haven't followed the Dark Horse Conan after Busiek and Nord so methinks with this tempting piece of news i shall be adding it to my pull list by Crom and Mitra! There's been no official announcement from Dark Horse yet. Conan the Slayer is only on issue 4, and Bunn has said it was a 25 issue commitment, so unless the Thomas/Grindberg book is a mini series in addition to the main Conan series, it will be some time yet before it is solicited. DH has been signing writers to adapt 2 Howard stories and fill in the gaps between the two and between the previous run and the next lately. Wood did the Belit story and stretched it to 25 issues filling in the gaps in the story instead, but Van Lente did 2, and Bunn is doing 2. I don't know if Thomas and Grindberg as working ahead knowing what they will adapt or doing something of a different kind of Conan project for DH. So it may be a while before you can add their book to your pull list. -M

While i like the idea of a box/pull list at a comic store to guarantee my getting a comic i really want, the stores take it a bit far. Any time i had a box and pull list the store owner/staff would always add to it: example, oh i like Avengers so toss in Captain America and Iron Man or any comic with an Avenger in it. Oh you like Archie? Toss in any and every Archie comic that comes out. All this without asking and then they would be upset when i take all these "fillers" out of my pile and return them to them and they were expecting me to purchase. The other bit is that the pull should be convenient but go a week without picking them up and they call/email you insisting you come in immediately to buy what is in your box. It isn't costing them a single dime if i come in 2 weeks or 3 weeks later, as long as i buy what is in my box (and i am a regular purchaser, in every 2-3 weeks) and when i would get what is in my box, i always shop and end up buying more. So why harass me the loyal and valued customer when it is the collecting fanboy's asking for 17 reserved copies that never fulfill their orders? No thanks. Prefer to carry my list and pull off the shelf as it is more like the old days of never knowing what joys you will find when shopping. End of rant from cranky old man!

On the flip side, there are now so many books form so many companies, some shipping more than once a month, shops cannot order everything for the shelves, so a lot of books get ordered only for pull list boxes and are never available for walk in customers to pick up. It won't be Marvel and DC books you can't find, but stuff form mid-tier publishers like Dark Horse and smaller companies.
If you look at COnan number in particular. It's selling less than 10K copies each month. There are 5K Diamond accounts in North America. That means an average of 2 copies per account. But when you consider the number of copies places like Midtown, DCBS, Mile High, Lonestar, Westfield, TFAW, and others with large mail order businesses, that means a lot of brick and mortar shops are ordering 0 copies of Conan, and probably never will unless it is on one of their customer's pull lists.
In this day and age of bloated publishing lines and limited retailer budgets, the only way to guarantee you will get books from publishers outside of Marvel, DC (and the bigger Image sellers) is to let the retailer know to order them. Otherwise, you may never see the book on the shelves of a shop to buy it.
The shop I go to actually uses Diamond software to track pulls. They enter what's on my pull into the software and it tells them what to put in my file each week. No extras. Sometimes it is even too strict, as for example Rom was initially solicited as Rom, Spaceknight, which is how it was added to the list, but when the book shipped it got listed as just Rom, so the software didn't tell them to put it in my file and I had to get a copy off my shelf and have them adjust the entry on my pull file in the software suite.
And actually it can cost them if you don't pick up your books right away. Payment on Diamond invoices are due before Diamond will ship the next week's books for most of their smaller accounts. Some shops run such a narrow margin they need to make the money on Wednesday when the books come out to pay the invoice so they can get the next week's books. If they are late with the payment, they have to pay a late fee and higher shipping rates from Diamond to get their next week's books on time. Miss one shipment and they are likely done for good as their "loyal" customers will buy the books elsewhere to get them on time and stick them with unsold books. Sucks for retailers, but Diamond is a monopoly and can do whatever the hell they want.

True about the stores not being able to carry everything. My circumstances may be unique here though as there are really only 3 major shops in Phoenix that compete for the weekly sales. They actually do manage to stock a good bit of the weekly comics only missing out on some of the odder small company stuff. Other smaller random dealer shops subsist by being the odd store out that is infrequently shopped but focusing more on collectible toys, cards, figures, games and such. That is why i have my card list.
The 3 major shops which i frequent most often now have a policy that they will pre-order anything from Previews for a customer as long as that customer is willing to be entered into their computer with name/address/phone/email and credit card to guarantee payment once ordered and if the customer never comes in to pick up. This idea actually works out quite well as the best for me. I can browse/shop every few weeks as there are only a few Marvel/DC that i follow and the Big Two are always on the shelves.
To be honest my buying days were in my youth and now i am the steady customer who when i do come in will normally spend $80-100 every 2-4 weeks depending on what interests me. Instead of being the unreliable youngster spending around $100 every week or missing weeks dependent upon paycheck versus bills, i am the mature steadily employed and consistent buyer they know.
My purchases have streamlined and become more specific to my tastes and 2 of these 3 shops owner's have been around since the beginning of the comic book store's and i have known and shopped and had pull boxes with them before. I am not an unknown person or quantity and am instead a preferred customer of known reliability who has always bought whatever i ordered so am trusted and respected by the owners. The 3rd shop is only a few years old but the owner grew up here and i know him as well from all the years we shopped as we are in the same age group.

Looks like some bumps in the road for this project, when asked about it recently, Grindberg had this to say...
So looks like it's not an adaptation of an existing story, but a new Conan tale by Roy but that the last iteration had the rug pulled out from under it. Still looking forward to it, but it might be some time before it sees the light of day.
