If only I had the resources...
this is the newly complete comic room for LeeKirbyDitkocomics, the father and son collectors out in Colorado who own a shop and were featured on an episode of Comic Trips. Way beyond my means (both the collection and he room) but it's nice to dream.

So I've mentioned that we were doing a house reshuffle leading to a new comic room/office/studio space for me when I ended up in the hospital to get surgery. I am just starting to get back to the project, and started sifting through stuff this weekend, and took a few before pics for folks to see to compare to the after pics I'll take when it's done, but it will be several weeks (months) before it's done. The new room is a finished attic, so first we must go upstairs... The plan is to line the walls going up with original art, sketches and prints once it gets painted (which is after it gets spackled which is after...) Once you get to the top of the stairs you look out over the length of the room... it's a mess, all the stuff that was downstairs in the office/studio and in the comic room all just got moved upstairs and lined up along the walls. The room is l-shaped, so going around the corner you see in the previous pic around the stairwell is this... more mess of course. The wall opposite this is just lined with stuff... The plan is for this to be a sitting/reading room with shelves of comics/trades, etc. and art/posters on the wall... In that area, abutting the stairs is a little niche closet, right now filled with short boxes, art etc. this closet was completely inaccessible when everything was brought up and dumped upstairs, but I spent some time trying to clear access to it this weekend. These are the boxes I need to get through to start the great cull in earnest. Closer look at the closet full of stuff... the plan is to use the shelves for comics, books, etc. but not to load it up with short boxes once all is said and done. Looking back form the planned sitting area back towards the stairs, we see what will be the office/studio on the far end space currently cluttered with stuff... one of the features is a series of built in book cases in the long area between the studio and sitting room areas... and the clutter in what will be the studio space, including a bunch of Conan comics sitting atop my drawing board. so I have my work cut out for me over the next weeks (and/or months). I am currently trying to sort through some of the stuff to get it out of the way, then will do the pre-work to repaint the room and the trip, then I will start setting it up as the studio and sitting room sections of the comic room. I'll probably take soem process pics as I go along, but will definitely put the finished pics up when I get the room done (or done-ish as these things tend to continually evolve). -M

So I have continued to make progress on my comic room, and have a few pics of the progress. I don't want to continue to clutter up the Meanwhile thread, so I am resurrecting this thread. You can find the first set of progress pics in the Meanwhile thread here. Above you can see the original set of pics of the mess it was when I was starting out. Here are things as of this morning... I got all the prose books shelved, some on the built-ins... which have 2 shelves of prose paperbacks, etc. and the bottom larger shelf is non -Marvel/DC trades (except the Marvel omnibus of Shanower/Yong Oz stuff which is shelved with the First Comic Oz OGNs by Shanower) or on the shelves I built... you can also see I have more art up on the walls (the Glanzman Attu prints can be see here), and some of my swords on display (a Templar replica blade and my wife's longsword seen here). Cthulhu slumbers on the books, so don;t wake him if you are looking for something to read. So even though the books are gone, there still stuff on the bench I built, plus a lot of art lounging around waiting to be put up. You can see some toys and action figures on display now atop the shelves. The top ahelf of those shelves have all the Marvel and DC related prose books plus more indy trades. I also got a bunch of the DC related toys/action figures out on the DC trade shelves... I also got the Howard stuff displayed as well as some more DC stuff... and a better look at those 14 inch Mego DC figs that were part of the Mego 2018 revival... the Batman-related ones are in the previous pic of the DC section. I got the near-side mostly done, painting finished, shelves in place and mostly filled... you can see the sum of my Marvel trades on the shelf, plus the Marvel toys on display. The top shelf of that case has all the Star Wars & Star Trek prose books. There's some Starlin and Frazetta art up there, plus the 10 inch Toy Biz LOTR figures. The mostly empty bookshelf is my growth bookcase. The last few non-Marvel/DC trades are on it with most of the shelf available to put new acquisitions on. The other shelf will be for my pulps/sci-fi mags once I get them sorted. An in the corner of that section is this... still a bit messy. The spinning book shelf has all my comic strip collections plus all my Eisner and Joe Kubert GN and art books. The small shelf next to it has all my art books (both how-to books and art (or artist) retrospectives including all my Frazetta books, etc. I have a few more to shelve that are down in the former studio space downstairs. My drawing baord still needs to be brought upstairs, and will go next to the spinning bookshelf. Inside the closet, I have a rack set up which will hold comic boxes. You can see some of my carded action figures displayed on the wall behind it. Lastly I have most of my Mego case set up... most are from the 2018 revival, a few are vintage. I have a few of my Micronaut pieces displayed on top, the rest are still downstairs and need to be moved up to join these. I still have more to do. There's a lot of art, prints and posters yet to go up. I still have some stuff downstairs to bring up and set on display or shelve. But all the painting and construction is done, so it's all just puttering stuff now, and I can take my time to set it up how I like it. Some of the displays may change over the next few days, and all the boxes of other remaining clutter will disappear over the next week or so. I'll do a final tour once it's all done. -M

Wow! It's come a long way in 2.5 years, mrp. Nicely done! Not much happened for 2 years, most of the progress has been in the last 6 months, and the vast majority of that in the last 6 weeks. There's also parallel development in the finished basement room, which is where most of the work that got done in the first 2 years was done. It, however, is currently a mess as I have pulled things I wanted for the upstairs from it and haven't put the basement back together yet. -M

Ok I have the pics and I am going to try to post them tonight, but internet has been going in and out sporadically since about 4 this afternoon when a wave of storms passed through the area, so I am not sure how well this is going to go. If I lose posts too often and get frustrated, I will try again later or tomorrow. There are a lot of pics, so it will be image heavy, and I will split it over several posts. The first few images in each post will show the general area, and then I will post more specific close ups or break down the area for closer looks at sections, pieces of art, things of interest etc. So if you just want to get a sense, you can skim the posts just looking at the first few pics in each. I wanted to do the pics during the afternoon where I got a lot of natural light, but the storm rolled in while I was taking the pics, and it got dimmer up there, so I had to rely on electric light and the camera's flash, so some pics might be a little darker. Let's start with the stairs up to the room... or looking down the stairs from the top... on he left wall looking up is a bunch of DC related art... while the other wall has Marvel and other miscellaneous genre art... -M

In this post (and the next), I will showcase some of the art in the stair "gallery" if you have no interest in it, skip these and move to the next post... At the bottom of the Marvel/Other wall, the first piece is this... one of the plates from the Michael Golden Doctor Strange portfolio. The other plates are hanging in the room proper. Next on the wall are a couple of classic Marvel comics prints-I got these form the Hero Initiative who were selling them at Gem City Comic Con a few years back and all the proceeds went to helping comic creators in need. A Doc Strange Colan cover... and the debut of the Panther... Next up is a print of an unpublished project from Walt Simonson, the print was released but the project cancelled before release, this was a pick up form a Lonestar auction... next to it is a print of the cover art for Stephen King's werewolf book done (and signed) by Bernie Wrightson (also a Lonestar auction pick up... next to them is a Rocketeer print by Cary Nord from the 2012 Heroes World Con (also a Lonestar auction pick up) and next to that is one of the plates from Jim Starlin's Metamorphosis Odyssey portfolio I picked up kust after the turn of the millennia when I was still living in New England... there's a couple more plates of this portfolio up in the room proper. A lot of the rest of the wall features plates from a couple of portfolios-The Legend of Arzach-a series of six portfolios featuring a comic artist who's who doing their version of Moebius' character-I have 4 of the six portfolios and I displayed a number of plates from it here and in the room proper; the other porfolio was Charles Vess' Book of Ballds and Sagas portfolio. I found all 4 Arzach portfolios one day in the art book section of a Half Price Books in Columbus, the Vess portfolio I picked up about the same time I did the Metamorphosis Odyssey portfolio nearly 20 years ago. Here are some of those plates... Arzach by Ploog and Sienkewicz... Walt Simonson... Frank Brunner... Dave Gibbons... Stephen Bissette Kevin Eastman and John J. Muth... and the Vess plates... and over the doorway, another pair of Arzach plates (by Kaluta & Bolland) plus a trio of Frazetta pics scavenged from the Frazetta calendar I had for 2019... -M

At the top of the other wall, I have a bunch of Conan and fantasy art from Jeff Austin-these are original art pages I bought form him over several cons at the Jim and Dan shows-Jeff does a lot of stuff for AC comics (a lot of inking for Fem Force) but also did a lot of work in 'zines and in book illustration. These fantasy pieces are form a book he did spot illos for... and here's the Conan stuff-there's an Earl Norem print of a SSOC cover I picked up form a dealer at a Jeff Harper show in Columbus, a quartet of Conan commissions I had done at local shows (left top Sean Forney, right top Nate Lovett, bottom left Adam Fields, bottom right Brian Lattimer) anda Red Sonja sketch I picked up form a Lonestar auction... and yes that is a Usagi Yojimbo lightswitch cover you see... Over on the DC wall... the original art for a JSA pin up inked by Jeff Austn done for a 'zine in the 80s I believe, not sure who the penciller is, Jeff couldn't remmeber. It is a blue line scan of the pencils inked by Jeff for the 'zine. next to it is an All Star Squadron print by Arvell Jones-I bought it form him when I met him at Gem City CC a couple years back, it's singed nad personalized, but the sig is in the corner that's cut off two more of the Hero Initiative cover prints, Space Ghost by Rude and Jack Kirby's Fourth World by Simonson... a comic page print by Scoot McMahon featuring Hawkman and Robin in an Icarus themed gag a Flash original piece by Nate Lovett (who did one of the Conan commissions and because of his work on Paw Patrol he also did a Kryto shot on my Action #1000 blan cover I am in process of doing a Superman themed jam cover on) I picked this piece up in the charity auction at last year's Champion City Comic Con. Here's an abstract piece of the DC heroes, a mass market poster I saw and thought was really cool so I snagged a copy... it's next to the big Alex Ross promo poster for the treasury sized Justice League Secret Origins book (you can see the poster well in the initial pic of the stariwell so I didn't post it here). Two more DC themed pieces, a Jughead as the Joker/Veronica as Harley print by Archie artist Craig Boldman I got form him at one of the Jim and Dan Shows... and a Dan Davis piece in the DC animated style featuring Batgirl and Supergirl I got from him at one of the first Gem City cons I went to... And that wraps up just the stairwell, ready for more as we go to the room proper...? -M

When you get to the top of the stairs, you are in what I call the nearside of the upstairs (I described the layout in the previous set of posts about the progress of the room). As you look form the stairs to the window, there is the large bookshelf that is Marvel focused... moving to the left is a few more miscellaneous shelves... and my drawing table... Close ups of this area in the next post... -M

Some of the art above my drawing table... that's an original page form issue #15 of the 90s Hawkman series inked (and signed) by Andrew Pepoy. This was an ebay pick up (for about $15) circa 2000 when I still used ebay. That's another Scoot McMahon print behind the Megos and the Hawkgirl is a Ren McKenzie print. The Hawkgirl headshot is a commissioned sketch by Howard Chaykin when I met him at Gem City Comic Con and the Doctor Fate print is by Stuart Sayger I bought from him (plus a hot of other stuff you will see later) at a Jim and Dan show. Next to my art table is a spinning bookcase we got form a bookstore going out of business. I have all my Eisner and Kubert stuff in it, plus all my comic strip collections (except for the oversize albums that were too tall for it) atop it is the colossal Red Dragon from D&D minis, my Spirit action figure and a few other tchotchkes... behind the Red Dragon is a Thanos commission by Rick Deschene I had done at Origins Game Fair 5 or so years back. above the "Hobbit Door" that the Thanos is on is a number of sketch cards-these are inexensive ways to support artists and I usually get a few at every show I go to... Dr. Fate, Hawkman and the Pumpkin demon are by Adam Fields, Orion and the Spirit by Craig Boldman, the Hawk chibis I am not sure of, my wife picked them up from an artist at Gen Con when she went a few years ago and I was not able to go. and the other side of these... Hellboy, Lobster Johnson, female Loki and the first Ghost Rider are by Matthew "Pogues" Metzger, the second Rider is another Adam Fields piece. Next to the spinning rack is my shelf of art books and art and writing reference... atop which is a variety of intersting tidbits, Egyptian, Frazetta, Templars, etc. and another Starlin Metamorphosis Odyssey print behind it... next to this is a corner shelf that is mostly empty until I accumulate more stuff, atop it is a bronze cast statue of a Spartan I found at an estate sail, the Celtic Cross that was used in our wedding ceremony, etc. Some of the art on the wall next to the window and corner shelf...a promo poster for the Wilderlands of High Fantasy boxed set for D&D featuring Frazetta art, the movie poster for the Frazetta documentary, and another Starlin plate... and under that art is my overflow shelf (i.e. somewhat empty with room to grow) upon which are the 4 Toy Biz Lord of the Rings figures I have... and that brings us to the Marvel shelf... the left side of the top shelf... and the right... the left side of the shelves... and the right... the small shelf on top is filled with Star Wars and Star Trek prose novels. The bottom left shelf is Star Wars trades and whatever vintage Star Wars figures I have. There's a bunch of Marvle Heroclix and decks of Marvel themed playing cards there too. That's it for this section, more to come. -M

At the top of the stairs to the right of the area you just saw is a big closet. This is where I keep the comic boxes. There are 21 short boxes upstairs, which represents about 60% of the total comic boxes I have (the rest are in the game room downstairs in the basement, which is still a work in progress). It also features some art and toys on display... The left side of the closet... those ar ethe Biff Bang Pow Flash Gordon movie action figures above it the wall next to it... with some Burroughs action figures, a Warlock print from Angel Medina when I met him at Gem City, a George Perez postcard, and yes authentic Mardi Gras beads. The four boxes on top are Batman and Superman comics, the four below are the first 4 DC boxes. Above the comic boxes on that side, Deep One action figure and a pair of Stuart Sayger prints, A Knight Templar and Ghost Rider the center of the closet... 6 more DC boxes (the rest are still down in the gameroom), some boxed toys and the Captain America Hot Wheels assortment a better look at the Hot Wheels and the art above it... a couple more Sayger prints, this time Batman themed and my Tarzan comics... and the right side the 90s era Flash Gordon animated action figures and Alex Ross lithograph recreating Avengers #4, plus the shelf with 5 of the Conan art short boxes (housing all my Conan and REH comic sized-comics) and a 6th short box on there with all the King Features heroes in comic form (Phantom,Flash Gordon,Mandrake etc.) plus the (4) plastic crates with all my oversized and magazine sized comics (except Heavy Metal and SSOC). the closet extends a bit behind the Conan shelf but that part is used for storage of stuff I rarely need to get too (art I didn't hang up, storage totes, etc.). That's it for the closet area. -M

Extending from the nearside of the room (studio area) is what would be a hallway if there were walls, that I simply call the aisle. You can see it here leading to the area you have just seen... and here looking from the studio area down the aisle to the rest of the space... On one side of the aisle are the built in book cases that were here when my wife bought the house, and the cube shelving units I got to house trades. Along the one slanting wall (it's the eaves of the house as this is the attic) opposite the stairwell is a row of Alex Ross DC posters. If you face the wall and go left to right, the characters are in alphabetical order, but they will be reverse as I will post pics form right to left as we move form the studio to the sitting room on the far side of the space. Zatanna and Supergirl... Spectre and Shazam... Hawkman (with Atom), Doctor Fate and Batman... Batgirl and then the first of 2 group hots, the JLA... and a recreation of one of the classic JLA/JSA cross-over Crisis covers... As for those built in bookcases, they house prose novels (top 2 shelves) and indy trades (bottom shelf). I installed LED lights on some of the shelves to shed a little extra light when perusing the shelves. Those lights have remotes, plus I displayed a number of (museum replica quality) blades on those shelves.... atop those built ins is the long narrow bookcase I repurposed into improvised magazine boxes. The full run of Savage Sword of Conan, all my Heavy Metal issues and a few other misc. Conan themed GNs are housed there, plus some stuff is displayed atop it. I displayed all the True Believer Conan reprints I have in front of that bookcase as well. (that's the one actual Spirit section I own, and it features Frazetta ghosting on it, so it is up on display here) and atop the built ins next to the improvised mag shelf is a little bit of other Conan themed stuff (and my cribbage board, I wish I oculd find someone around here to play, it's been about 10 years since I had a live playing partner) We'll look at the DC side in the next post... -M

Atop those cube shelving units sit my DC omnibi and oversized HC, plus some other DC merch... plus the Bat-themed 14 inch Mego releases form 2018 (and a plush Bat-Mite) inside the shelves are all my other DC trades plus some DC action figures form various lines on patrol keeping them safe... and next to them is a round open shelf featuring a host of DC themed toys... the top shelf is full of DC mystical heres (especially Dr. Fates & Spectres) and the rest is an army of Hawkmen and Hawkwoman (girls) And the last DC shelf is the one featuring all the Showcase volumes (plus a handful of DC toys and some indy trades in the bottom shelf) close up of the top left... and top right... I've yet to baptize those DC shot glasses with whiskey, but fear not, they will be used soon. And that wraps the DC section, as we move into the sitting/reading room proper. -M

Ok so the reading room/sitting room... right side... left side... front side (basically to the immediate left as you come down the aisle) looking over the staircase... and the front side corner... these last two feature the improvised built ins I constructed to hold physical media (here DVDs and blurays, other you can see in previous pics hold books). I'll break down the areas in detail in upcoming posts. -M
