My collected editions are growing fast because I discovered instocktrades.com last year and I can't stop ordering more & more books! :) So I have been on the lookout for a sturdy yet affordable bookcase. A lot of the comic related message boards discuss the best bookcases to buy & the number 1 seems to be from the Ikea store. Doesn't do me any good since there is no Ikea store in my area. Although I did go to the Ikea website in an attempt to order a bookcase but the shipping cost came out to be $235!!! "Kallax" bookcases from Ikea are what others are saying is the sturdiest. I have been considering buying closetmaid cubicles from Target, they look similar in design to the Kallax ones. Those standard particleboard bookcases do not hold weight well and the shelves start to sag as evidenced by the pics posted above. I found a picture online of a "Kallax" bookcase where someone is showing off their collection, here ya go... We have no IKEA in my state either. The bookshelves I showed on the left are from amazon. The ones on the right are from Wal-Mart. 3 of them are brand new, but one has now survived for 5 years, 2 in-town moves, and one ocean crossing. Much better than I expected of it.

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my collection, so here it is! My Marvel/DC shelf. On top (from left) is a MechaGodzilla bust bank, my glasses case, a 12" Boba Fett retro action figure, a snow globe with a picture of my dog, a snoopy calendar, a cyborg statue, a lion sculpture I received for Christmas one year, and the Rocketeer fighting a werewolf. On the shelves below that are my books, Rorschach and Batman Play Arts Kai figures, a Magog figure from Kingdom Come (which no longer has his staff, as it is broken), and a Deathstroke figure. A close up of Rorschach. A close up of Deathstroke. A close up of Nolanverse Batman. And a close up of Magog. Cool figure, but definitely not meant for play. The knees aren't articulated whatsoever. More coming up!

My main shelf. On the top left is a small shelf with a 6" Boba Fett figure, a Peanuts art book, and Funko POP Wolverine and Master Chief. To the right of that is a 12" figure of the Shadow. That thing is detailed - it even has real shoelaces and socks! Next to that are some various non Marvel and DC books. I haven't read a lot of these. Below that is my Batman action figure display, and the small pile of issues are ones that I have a special fondness for; ones I've had since I started reading comics, ones that introduced my favorite characters, etc. Next to that is a Moon Knight glass I bought the first time I ever went to my LCS, which contains an Original Sin promotional rubber eyeball that I got at my old LCS. The bottom shelf contains some various Marvel and DC books, a few pieces of Usagi Yojimbo and Hellboy merchandise, and a nice figure of the Question. Close up of the top shelf. Somehow I have a lot of Rocketeer books while not liking the series much, as one year I was reading a lot of pulp/noir stuff and received a bunch of Rocketeer books for Christmas. I thought I'd like it, but I suppose I prefer the pulp/noir books more like the Shadow. I did love Stan Sakai's Rocketeer story, though. From left: Arkham Knight Batman (I also have the Arkham Knight himself and Scarecrow, but they aren't on display), Greg Capullo Thrasher suit Batman, New Batman Adventures Batman, Greg Capullo Talon (which is a nice figure, but had a really strong odor at first and also has what I think are white plastic shavings in its arm joints. I've heard of other people having this problem as well), and Greg Capullo Mr Freeze (which is also cool, but the upper half was entirely separated from the lower half when I first got it; as long as I'm careful, it looks fine, though). The Question, some Marvel and DC books, and the Firefly 10th Anniversary book. There are some funny stories in that book! More pictures coming!

A closer look at the pile of issues from before. The first one is Convergence: Shazam #2, which is one of my favorite issues. It was the first book I ever read that featured Gaslight Batman, and my avatar is from this book. The Darwyn Cooke Superman statue. I just got this on Wednesday. My LCS was having a 20% off sale since they've been open for 2 years now, so I decided to get this. They've had it for a while, and I looked at it every time I went in. It's a really cool piece! My Hellboy/Usagi Yojimbo shelf. On the top are my Hellboy/Lobster Johnson figures and collectibles, and there are a couple prints behind those. On the top shelf are my Mignolaverse tpbs and my Lobster Johnson issues, guarded closely by a Lobster PVC figure. Below that are my Usage Yojimbo books, and the bottom shelf contains my Mignolaverse single issues, a few bigger books that wouldn't fit on the upper shelves, and other books by Mignolaverse creators (Harrow County, Doom that Came to Gotham, Jake Ellis, etc). I'll have more pictures up tomorrow. Hope you guys liked these!

I just got the two pieces of Astro City original artwork that I own hung up in my music room/comic room/office. These are both drawn by Alex Ross and are character design sheets for the Silver Agent, who, as readers of the series will know, is one of the more important characters in the book. Kurt Busiek's Astro City is one of my all-time favourite comic book series and I picked up these pieces from an online dealer about 10 years ago, I guess, but I've only just gotten around to having them framed and hung up (they're under UV protective glass, just to be on the safe side). The top sheet in the frame is costume design info from Ross to Astro City's regular artist Brent Anderson, showing how the Silver Agent's costume should be drawn -- I love that it has Brent's fax(?) number on it! The bottom sheet is a much more detailed full costume illustration and this very page was actually reproduced on the back cover of Astro City (Vol. 1) #2. I'm really pleased to have finally got these pieces up on display; they've been tucked away in a folder for much too long. The two framed comics to the left are just a couple of issues from my collection that I like the covers of (the frames are easily to open and I usually rotate the comics in them every six months of so).

And what are those frames that you are using for your comics? I've been looking for a decent frame for my signed books.

Wow!!! How did you acquire those, and what did they cost you? I had to look back at my e-mails to find this out because it was a while ago...2007, in fact. Anyway, I bought them from www.anthonyscomicbookart.com and the previous owner had apparently bought them direct from Alex Ross's own website. The rough costume design sketch, with instructions to Brent Anderson, cost me $75.00 and the full pencils sketch of the Silver Agent cost me $525, so $600 in total (which based on the exchange rate back then would've actually set me back somewhere in the range of £375.00). Looking at similar stuff on Alex Ross's website now, I'd say that they were almost certainly worth a fair bit more now and they were 9 years ago. I remember Anthony's had a fair bit of original Astro City art available at the time. In particular, I remember that they had a Brent Anderson drawn page from the "Confessions" story line in which the Confessor (my favourite AC character, obviously) pulls three crooks out from beneath a manhole cover and the crooks have the faces of Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson and Alex Ross. I've always sort of regretted not buying that piece as well, but it was out of my budget -- especially as I badly wanted the two pieces that did buy. And what are those frames that you are using for your comics? I've been looking for a decent frame for my signed books. I had to search back in my e-mails for this too! I knew it was an American-based eBay seller, who actually made the frames himself. Anyway...turns out that the seller's name or handle was frameitagainsam, but unfortunately it looks as if he's stopped trading on eBay. I just did a search for that seller and it said that the ID was no recognised. Shame, 'cause they are really nicely finished, with 'American Walnut' stained wooden frames, plexi-glass and a UV protective mylar sleeve inside that you slip the comic into. The top of each frame comes off very easily and changing the issues out is no bother at all. I do have an e-mail address for this defunct seller, which may still work. If you want it, PM me.

So I am experimenting with a new way to display comics/art/what have you on the wall, a cheap effective solution that requires just a little DIY ability to use. I wanted to be able to display several comics/mags/treasury books on a wall and have it be easy to swap out what was on display easily, without having to dela with frames or what not. So I went down to Home Dept and bought a few strips of vinyl corner molding pieces and cut them to the length I wanted, and then hung them on the wall as an impromptu shelving/display strip like so... I sued dry wall mounts to make sure they were secure and spaced them so the bottom row was big enough to accommodate up to treasury sized books, and the top two up to magazine sized comics. I have more to mount in other places on other walls, and still have to figure out the final display, but so far I like the way it presents and is useful. The room is still a work in progress (as are the basement and office). -M

So over the holiday weekend I got the bulk of the refit done on the office and the comic room. I still have a bunch of fine tuning and cleaning up to do, but I do have some preliminary pics of parts of the rooms. I mentioned picking up a spinner rack two weeks ago, not a comic spinner but one from a card and stationary store, and I got it cleaned up and set up in the office now... filled with lots of Flash Gordon, Phantom and other pulp, sci-fi and comic strip heroes. Also in the office, I added new shelving and made a sci-fi wall...and fantasy/sword & sorcery wall on the other side of the corner... also in the office, a little section of Kirby creations in comic and toy form... over in the comic room, I added more display shelving... with some comic mags and a little Steranko display. You can see the metal shelving unit that holds the short boxes and the display books hiding the boxes to one side in the pic. Over on the other wall more sword & sorcery stuff and comics... the bookcase is all my Conan comics, SSOC etc. All the books are either by Robert Howard or Howard pastiches. You can see some Starlin prints form the Metamorphosis Odyssey Portfolio, some Kubert books, the Howard heroes Re-Megos, the Sam Glanzman Attu prints, the Earl Norem Conan print and along the top some of my favorite books by favorite artists...and some of the clean up and fine tuning left to do. Above the bookshelves on the other wall, one more row of display shelving with some of my favorite covers by favorite artists... You can see part of the Edgar RIce Burroughs shelf and Michael Moorcock shelves there too. The green hardcover in the center of the Burroughs shelf is the 1918 1st edition Tarzan of the Apes I have, one of the pride and joys of my small collection. That's it for the preview. I will do better, more detailed pics once I get all the fine tuning done (probably in about 2 weeks since I have a toy show to go to next weekend). Next it's on to the game room, which is the finished room in our basement that hasn't gotten any love in about 10 years or been used in about 6, and needs some serious TLC... -M

I had a house I would do something like this and I don't display any comic book because the space is limited in a 427 square feet condo that I live in. I just amazed of how well every member here post pictures of their collections ... sigh!
