dbutler69, Shaggy did not make the list - Sorry about that because I had to cut him out because Scooby has a great deal of importance than Shaggy. Darn! Well, at least Wonder Dog is on the list, not to mention Gleek and Dynomutt. I'd sort of forgotten about Wonder Dog, but I'm glad to see that you didn't!

#49 Gossamer Looney Tunes CreationFrom WikipediaThe word "gossamer" means any sort of thin, fragile, transparent material — in particular, it can refer to a kind of delicate, sheer gauze or a light cobweb. The name is meant to be ironic, since the character is large, menacing, and destructive. My Personal ThoughtsI'm a big bigfoot/sasquatch fan and I adore this monster from Looney Tunes because he such a lovable character and have so many great mannerism and they made him both scary and cute at the same time. I find this character so unique because he is all hair and according to Wikipedia above "a light cobweb" and that what his hair is like to me. In the following two You Tubes clips that I will showing you shortly the description of "a light cobweb" comes to mind. This is one of the most unique character and one of the most underrated one indeed. To me, he is an oversize cute hairball with touch of whimsical delights of huge horror that delights us all. Cute Gif of GossamerWith so many great cartoon characters - I find it hard to believe that I had him down to Number 49. For the record, I will be doing one a day to give all of you a chance to see the next character and I wanted to make this last. He wasn't named Gossamer until much later, which was kind of silly because he was named in the old cartoons. He is called "Rudolph."

#42 Droopy Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer CreationFrom WikipediaDroopy is an animated cartoon character: an anthropomorphic dog with a droopy face, hence the name Droopy. He was created in 1943 by Tex Avery for theatrical cartoon shorts produced by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio. Essentially the polar opposite of Avery's other famous MGM character, the loud and wacky Screwy Squirrel, Droopy moves slowly and lethargically, speaks in a jowly monotone voice, and—though hardly an imposing character—is shrewd enough to outwit his enemies. When finally roused to anger, often by a bad guy laughing heartily at him, Droopy is capable of beating adversaries many times his size with a comical thrashing ("You know what? That makes me mad!"). My Personal ThoughtsTo me, he's quite underrated as a Cartoon Character and having said that I consider him one of the funniest character around that hardly speaks and Tex Avery did a fantastic job creating it. I think of him as a silent screen star with a quirky (might not be the right word here) behavior that makes him mad with his enemies. One of the most versatile cartoon characters and I enjoyed him very much as a kid growing up watching cartoons. One of kind, lovable, totally unique, and most of all has a funny way of putting two and two together. I did not watch much of him when I was watching cartoons but it is a treat for me to watch him because he doesn't say much that's the beauty of this character that I consider a Tex Avery Masterpiece. The Dailymotion Clip is my favorite cartoon of Droopy! Made in 1954.

Yes, it would be really tough to make a list like this. There have been so many great cartoon characters over the years. Droopy, good call! This thread is bringing back some memories. All these characters I haven't watched for years and years.

Thanks for the info on the Mystery Machine. It has such an unusual profile in the original cartoon, not sure if it could really equate to any actual van design but those are some great choices.
Wonder Dog - yep, a fine choice. On the basis of Superfriends, I've always loved Wendy, Marvin & Wonder Dog more than the Wonder Twins.
Bambi - I've never seen it. My wife on the other hand, her and her sister have the film memorized. They watched it so much as kids on VHS that their mother eventually had to hide the tape.
Droopy - Another great choice! Some great cartoons, my favorite probably being Dixieland Droopy where he plays the legend that is John Irving Pettybone.

re: the Mystery Machine. Looking at this picture from Mecha's post: I first thought of an early 60s Ford Econoline van: But the Mystery Machine has the spare tire mounted in front, and the Econoline didn't do that. The only van that could have the spare in front and the driver sitting above the front wheels is the old Volkswagen Microbus:

#41 Huckleberry Hound Hanna Barbara CreationFrom WikipediaHuckleberry "Huck" Hound is a fictional cartoon character, a blue anthropomorphic dog that speaks with a Southern drawl and has a relaxed, sweet, and well-intentioned personality. He first appeared in the series The Huckleberry Hound Show. The cartoon was one of six TV shows to win an Emmy Award in 1960 as an "Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Children's Programming"; The first animated series to receive such an award. My Personal ThoughtsOne of my favorites and this Cartoon Show had a major impact on my family when I was growing up because this is a rare cartoon show that my whole family was able to watch on a Saturday Morning together. My Parents loved the sweetness of this lovable dog and this show along with the Bugs Bunny Show and the Pink Panther Show were the only three shows that we watch as a family. I find his personality to be truly humbled, great voice of Daws Butler (link of him below) that really puts him on this list. It was his voice that made Huckleberry Hound one of my personal favorite and being hard of hearing as a child growing up I had no problems understanding him and that's made this cartoon very special to me. I wished that I could rate him higher but with so many characters to choose from it was very difficult for me to place Huckleberry Hound at #41. Daws Butler Hanna Barbara should be proud of themselves for producing a great Cartoon Show and this show according to Wikipedia won an Emmy Award for it's outstanding achievement and this show is a quality show that all members of the family can enjoy. Huckleberry Hound is quite versatile and having said that speaks volumes of the versatility that he brings to us on a weekly basis on Saturday Morning. An Icon Show Period. #40 Dynomutt, Dog Wonder Hanna Barbara CreationFrom WikipediaDynomutt, Dog Wonder is a 30-minute Saturday morning animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The show centers on a Batman-esque super hero, the Blue Falcon, and his assistant, bumbling yet generally effective robot dog Dynomutt, a Doberman Pinscher who can produce a seemingly infinite number of mechanical devices from his body. As with many other animated super-heroes of the era, no origins for the characters are ever provided. My Personal ThoughtsThe main reason why I like him because he reminded me of Inspector Gadget because of the infinite number of devices that this mutt can muster in this delightful 30 minute cartoon. I just loved this cartoon show for that reason alone and I watch this show on a regular basis with my three nephews and they find him funny, amusing, and they all loved Blue Falcon as well. I like Blue Falcon too and he reminds me of Batman, the Caped Crusader and he was basically a side kick to Dynomutt, the Dog Wonder. These two characters were fantastic together and that's why I enjoyed them so well. Picture of the Blue Falcon with Dynomutt below ... Blue Falcon with Dynomutt!Intro of Dynomutt, the Dog WonderI just loved his Introduction here and this was done just right! One of my favorite scenes in Dynomutt of where he teamed up with Scooby Doo and his gang. It's under 3 minutes long and it's consider a classic by all definition and sorry about the watermark on this video that's smacked in the middle of the cartoon clip shown here. This is one the better scenes in that great animated cartoons that Hanna Barbara created.

#39 Wally Gator Hanna Barbara CreationFrom WikipediaWally Gator is one of the segments from The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series. The other segments that compose this trilogy are Lippy the Lion & Hardy Har Har and Touché Turtle and Dum Dum. The segment consisted of 52 episodes over two seasons. From MeI almost put Touché Turtle and Dum Dum together in my countdown but after much debating I've decided to axe them because they were supporting characters in the Wally Gator show that ran for two seasons and that's why I decided not to include them. My Personal ThoughtsI loved the cartoon introduction of where Wally Gator is in a Florida Swampland doing crazy things with his motorboat and tipping off his hat at the end of this introduction and that introduction had a lasting impact on my life and the crazy things about it's was on for two seasons and what a two seasons it was and I was very disappointed that's didn't get a third season at all. IntroductionHanna Barbara did a great job with this character and one of the most unique character ever graced the cartoon world of where a funny alligator in a zoo doing all sorts of crazy things and having a time of hims life. I loved his mannerisms, personality, great humor, and most importantly always thinking of himself. That's Wally Gator to me. One of my favorite Wally Gator show entitled "Swamp Fever" and this show that I consider one of the best Wally Gator show that Hanna Barbara put together and that's why he deserved to be ranked #39 on my list of important animated cartoon character in animal form. I also liked the alligator angle too and that's why he's unique in every way shape or form. So, sit back and enjoy "Swamp Fever" that's coming up next in a Dailymotion Clip.

#38 Felix the Cat A Pat Sullivan & Otto Messmer CreationFrom WikipediaFelix the Cat is a funny-animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. The anthropomorphic black cat with his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences. Felix cartoons began airing on American TV in 1953. Joe Oriolo introduced a redesigned, "long-legged" Felix, added new characters, and gave Felix a "Magic Bag of Tricks" that could assume an infinite variety of shapes at Felix's behest. The cat has since starred in other television programs and in two feature films. As of the 2010s, Felix is featured on a variety of merchandise from clothing to toys. Oriolo's son, Don Oriolo, later assumed creative control of Felix. From MeI won't be doing #37 Tomorrow and that's will come up on Tuesday instead. Sorry Everyone! My Personal ThoughtsOne of the Greatest Silent Cartoon Star and has great popularity in the 1920's to 1950's and I remember this cartoon like it was yesterday. A cultural icon that image of Felix is being used everywhere and with good riddance and having said that I just he was used in Army Insignia's, Likeness of him on Warplanes, Billboards, Advertising, the works and believe me he was getting all the attention that infuriate Walt Disney's and his creation Mickey Mouse and Gang. I love his wide grinning face, huge eyes, and simple design that delights all comers and one of the most beloved cartoons in the 50's. His popularity during that time was simple superb and I'm sad that he ranked down here because I did not get much exposure that I liked and I was the only one in my family that liked him. Felix's Cartoons were produced by Trans-Lux - the same cartoon that produces The Mighty Hercules and I wanted to share that with you today. Here's the Theme of the Mighty Hercules if you like to hear it and it's always a favorite of mine for years and years. Stone Age FelixStone Age Felix is one of my favorite Felix the Cat Cartoons ever made in the 50's and I just loved the way they produces this great cartoon and it's was one of the first one that I seen and I was impressed by the way they made it then.
