Another Classic Comics Christmas has come and gone. I don't think I'm alone in thinking this was the best one yet. The sheer eclecticism of your entries is staggering. Every imaginable permutation of the medium—comic strips, comic books, magazine cartoons, political cartoons, graphic novels, mini-comics, web comics, undergrounds, indies, manga, bandes desinee—is represented, as is every decade from the 1900s to the 2000s. We should really give ourselves a collective pat on the back for our cosmopolitan taste, and for proving anew that here at CCF there is so much more to “classic comics” than old super-hero books (though we love them too!).
Before we take a look at your submissions, what say we spare arf a mo for some scintillating stats, shall we?
32 participants cast 363 votes for 185 cartoonists. This means there were significantly more multiple votes cast than last year (not altogether unexpected).
Tied for the most votes received at 11 each are Jack Kirby and Bill Watterson. Second place went jointly to Will Eisner and Frank Miller (9 votes). The bronze is split between Gary Larson, Charles Schulz and Jim Starlin (8 votes).
Here's how the rest of the survey breaks down”
7 votes: Darwyn Cooke, Jeff Smith
6 votes: John Byrne, Jaime Hernandez
5 votes: Hal Foster, Gilbert Hernandez, Scott McCloud, Stan Sakai, Dave Stevens
4 votes: Carl Barks, Mike Grell, Herge (George Remi), Dave Sim, Walt Simonson
3 votes: Sergio Aragones, Berke Breathed, Daniel Clowes, Kim Deitch, Sam Glanzman, Chester Gould, Dan Jurgens, Walt Kelly, Joe Kubert, Don Martin, Winsor McCay, Linda Medley, Mike Mignola, Wendy Pini, Don Rosa, Eric Shanower, Gilbert Shelton, Art Spiegelman, Osamu Tezuka
2 votes: Lynda Barry, Howard Chaykin, Frank Cho, Richard Corben, Robert Crumb, Jim Davis, Phillipe Druillet, Bill Everett, Keith Giffen, Fred Hembeck, Lynn Johnston, Russ Manning, Larry Marder, Bill Mauldin, Moebius (Jean Giraud), Victor Moscoso, Jerry Ordway, George Pérez, Paul Pope, Hugo Pratt, Jim Steranko, Alex Toth, Matt Wagner, Chris Ware, Basil Wolverton, Wally Wood, Jim Woodring
1 vote: Everybody else! (You're nuts if you think I'm typing all those names!)
Not surprisingly, the lion's share of citations—144—went to American cartoonists. Great Britain was next with 11. A distant third were France and Japan with 5 each. Other nationalities represented were Canada and New Zealand (4; 5 for Canada if you count Byrne, whose eligible work was done for American publishers), Belgium and Italy (3), the Netherlands and the Phillipines (2), Brazil and Norway (1).
Also not surprisingly, alas, the majority (172) of cartoonists cited were male. 11 women received nods, and two trangendered artists.
Next: Your lists!

As always, half the fun of these surveys is seeing why folks chose what they chose. You can see those whys and wherefores in the original threads by clicking on the following links: The ChallengeThe First DayThe Second DayThe Third DayThe Fourth DayThe Fifth DayThe Sixth DayThe Seventh DayThe Eighth DayThe Ninth DayThe Tenth DayThe Eleventh DayThe Twelfth DayThe Near MissesThe handful of folks who didn't finish their lists should feel free to finish at their convenience and I will update their list accordingly (but not the stats because I'm not doing all that math again!). For that matter, I never truly consider these surveys closed, so if you're reading this down the line and want to add your own list, please do. All I ask is that you read the Challenge/Advance Warning thread first so you understand the rules and that you post your choices in the original threads. And with that, we bid fare thee well to the year 2015. Big, big thanks to everyone who participated for not only meeting my expectations but exceeding them. Y'all rock! Here's to a 2016 full of health, happiness, success and good comics! Cei-U! I summon the big “whew!”

And I echo Crimebuster thanks, Kurt. I look forward to this event all year: no matter how much I may tear my hair out actually compiling my list. And thank you to my fellow posters for once again exposing me to creators and works I have never encountered before. These discoveries are one of the major reasons I look forward to the 12 Days.

Again, thanks Kurt. (However, I'm shocked--shocked--that such a careful writer and editor as yourself would misspell the name of one of the top vote-getting cartoonists.)

My hat is off to you, sir. 12, 8, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1 - 7 of mine made other people's lists, and I had exactly ONE Marvel/DC centric creator (who only worked in the '40s) and TWO traditional syndicated newspaper cartoonists. Crazy.

Again, thanks Kurt. (However, I'm shocked-- shocked--that such a careful writer and editor as yourself would misspell the name of one of the top vote-getting cartoonists.) I always remember that it's not the conventional spelling ("Schultz") but I always forget it's the T that's omitted, not the C. Anyhow, it's all been corrected. Cei-U! I summon the faux pas!

Thanks for another fantastically fun year, Kurt! Everyone's choices were definitely eye opening and I have plenty of new creators to check out this year.
