Another Classic Comics Christmas has come and gone. I think it may've been the best one we've ever done (but then I'm not exactly objective). I hope you all had as much fun as I did and I hope some of you lurkers will play with us next year. Now before we get to your lists, what say we linger arf a mo' over some senses-shattering (or at least mildly interesting) statistics, shall we?
38 participants cast 436 votes for 415 individual comics.
As you can see, there was very little duplication with just 21 comics receiving two votes each: All-New Collectors Edition #C-55, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14, Astro City #½, Avengers #4 and #177, Batman #251, Captain America #111, Conan the Barbarian #24, DC Special #29, Detective #526, Famous First Edition #F-7, Flash #1, Green Lantern #192, JLA #1, Jon Sable, Freelance #1, Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2, New Gods #7, New Mutants #21, Superman #162 and #252, and Watchmen #5
Only one comic took the #1 spot on multiple lists, with foxley and Mister Spaceman both listing Famous First Edition #F-7 as their top pick.
The Avengers was the most popular series with 19 different issues receiving votes. Tied for second place with 12 issues cited, were The Amazing Spider-Man and Batman. X-Men (a.k.a. Uncanny X-Men) took third with 11 issues cited. Other multiple nods went to Fantastic Four (10 issues cited), Captain America and Justice League of America (8 each), Superman (7), Astro City and Brave and the Bold (6 each), Detective, Flash (1987 series), Legion of Super-Heroes (1984 series), Marvel Graphic Novel and Sandman (5 each), Cerebus and Swamp Thing (second series) with 4 issues cited, and Love & Rockets with 3. More issues than I care to list had two issues apiece cited and fuggeddabout the single issue citations!
Marvel was far and away the most popular publisher with an impressive 184 votes (including two from Marvel UK and six from the Epic imprint). DC took the silver with 158 citations* (including 8 for Vertigo titles, 2 each for Homage and Wildstorm, and 1 for America's Best). Coming in a very distant third was Fantagraphics with 7 votes, followed by Warren (6 votes), Archie, Dell and Gold Key (5), Aardvark-Vanaheim, First and Image (4), Charlton, Dark Horse, EC, Harvey, and IPC (3).
*165 if you count the seven Australian reprint titles cited
To what I suspect is a surprise to absolutely no one reading these words, super-heroes was the most popular genre with a staggering 307 votes (that's a hair over 70%, folks)! The silver goes to horror with 26 citations and the bronze to science fiction at 23. Other genres noted include humor (12), fantasy (11), indie (9), action/adventure (8). funny animal (7), sword & sorcery, war and crime (6 each), jungle and western (4 each), romance and underground (2 each). These figures are a rough estimate, as many comics cited could be counted in multiple genres (for instance I classified Not Brand Echh as "humor" but could've counted it as "super-hero" just as easily).
Finally, here's how the survey results break down by decade:
1940-49: 7 votes 1950-59: 8 votes 1960-69: 66 votes 1970-79: 144 votes 1980-89: 135 votes 1990-99: 59 votes 2000-04: 17 votes
Keep in mind that a sizeable minority of these comics feature reprints from earlier decades.
To be continued…

As always, half the fun of these surveys is seeing why folks chose what they chose. You can see those whys and wherefores in the original threads by clicking on the following links: The ChallengeThe First DayThe Second DayThe Third DayThe Fourth DayThe Fifth DayThe Sixth DayThe Seventh DayThe Eighth DayThe Ninth DayThe Tenth DayThe Eleventh DayThe Twelfth DayThe Near MissesThe handful of folks who didn't finish their lists should feel free to finish at their convenience and I will update their list accordingly (but not the stats because I'm not doing all that math again!). For that matter, I never truly consider these surveys closed, so if you're reading this down the line and want to add your own list, please do. All I ask is that you read the Challenge/Advance Warning thread first so you understand the rules and that you post your choices in the original threads. And that oughtta do 'er. Big, big thanks to all our participants for rising to the challenge so brilliantly. Here's to a 2015 full of health, happiness, success and good comics! Cei-U! I summon the belated Auld Lang Syne!

We're down by 5 from last year, 'bone, likely due to the absence of Lone Ranger, Red Oak Kid and a few other CBR regulars who didn't follow us over.

We're down by 5 from last year, 'bone, likely due to the absence of Lone Ranger, Red Oak Kid and a few other CBR regulars who didn't follow us over. Cei-U! I miss those guys! I first checked out the Classics board back in December of '06 when Lone Ranger sent me a private message suggesting I participate in something called "Classic Comics Christmas". I've been grateful to him ever since, and agree his presence here is missed. Even if he only managed to pop in at Christmas.
