Comic books have had many popular heroes replaced temporarily , and in some cases , permanently. It became a trendy thing to do and was exploited in the 90's. From Azrael taking over for Batman to Jane Foster becoming Thor, it makes for fun storylines. In the case of Hal Jordan it caused a minor revolt . Pick 2 of your favorite " temporary " replacements.

This is a trope I usually hate, but it has been done a couple of times where I respected the result. Thus, I voted "Rhodey Iron Man" and "Other" (for Scott Lang Ant-Man).
I always miss a few when I make these polls. Grayson was a replacement that I LOVED because he totally earned it as a partner and a son. I actually bought the trade starting this arc.

My 2 picks was Wally West and Rayner. Their taking the mantle of the previous characters was a breath of fresh air. Hal and Barry were the dullest heroes in comics.
One could always vote Other in polls like this (e.g., Guy Gardner was some great comic relief in JLA) but I decided to vote for Wally West Flash. He probably even surpassed the original, and that's no small feat for a replacement character.

I think both Kyle Rayner and Wally West were excellent replacements, but I never really read Green Lantern or the Flash so I can't say either of them is a favourite.
My pick would be Scott Lang as Ant-Man.
(Can Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel count? She wasn't really succeeding Mar-Vell so much as picking up an unused name, but I think she did his legacy honour. She should have remained Captain Marvel from then on).

I know, right?! I was thinking the same for Genis-Vell

Kyle Rayner and Conner Hawke. But then they both had already replaced their predecessors right as I was getting into comics. So to me they are Green Lantern and Green Arrow as far as I am concerned. Outside of the cluster**** that was the Clone Saga I really did like Ben Reilly and his costume. Yeah, yeah leave me alone I'm a 90's kid that kind of fashion was a thing.

That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing." -- Charles Bukowski
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t (always subjective), and not just in comics. In wrestling, Superstar Billy Graham inspiring Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura and others is a good thing. WCW’s The Renegade trying to imitate the WWF’s Ultimate Warrior certainly did not work. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s blatant (but works), and other times it’s blatant and cheeky, perhaps even a tad disrespectful.
I guess comics are no different. I never expected U.S. Agent to work, but I grew to like him, although I think throwing an element or two of Judge Dredd into the mix worked. So he gets my vote.
Speaking of that, a magazine I own stated that 1987’s RoboCop is “a better Judge Dredd movie than the 1995 Stallone film”.

I admit I much preferred Morpheus to Garrett Sanford in the role of the Sandman. The latter had a certain bizarre charm, but Gaiman's reinterpretation was without peer. (We're talking about the sandman who brings us dreams, here, not costumed crime-fighters called Sandman).
