I was also really bad at recognizing what characters would become big. I felt pretty confident, for example, that G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS would quickly vanish from the stands. Not in a million years would I have expected Venom to become one of Marvel's main franchises, or that Deadpool would rack up hundreds of issues. Speaking as a fan of Gambit, I can safety say, he just looks cool. And when you're a kid, that's all that matter

Also, although they don't really count in terms of this thread because, actually, they're quite well known B-listers nowadays, I'm amazed that Cloak & Dagger didn't go on to be absolutely massive after their initial appearances in Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man. The fact that they've always struggled to carry an on-going title is still something that baffles me. They're such good characters, with great costumes and a cracking backstory. I feel like Mantlo was the only one who really understood the characters, afterwards they kind of floundered About a year ago, I read the run in the late 1980s Strange Tales, when it was a split book with Cloak & Dagger as one of the features. After a while Terry Austin takes over as writer from Mantlo, and I remember actually liking it better from Austin took over. I felt like Mantlo was running out of steam.

Also about as Cajun as I am Swedish. By yimminy! Hoordy goordy!

I still remember how I first encountered Deadpool in the 90's, there was a poster of some sort on the wall at a comic book shop and I thought "cool, he looks kind of like Spider-Man". Then when I read stuff with him, he was actually funny during a time when Spider-Man was decreasingly so. I'm not really big on post-90's Deadpool, but he was refreshing for me at the time. And again...looked really cool!!

Wasn't the purpose of the "Bloodlines" event to give us readers new and exciting characters to get attached to? I think this is the only one people remember.

I did quite like Triathlon. Good character, and his links to the Triune Understanding were compelling. Haven’t seen him since the Busiek Avengers run.

I think you might be the only one Bloodlines was definitely supposed to do that yes... but Hitman was the only one worth anything, IMO. The rest were bad 90s image riffs

Maybe the whole thing with Triathlon and the Triune Understanding was all that I needed to see of him. Perhaps some characters are tied to an arc, and there’s no real need for them beyond that.

When Bishop first showed up, I thought he was going to be a big, big star in the X-books. He seemed to be the ideal big brother figure: strong, competent, confident without being arrogant, and good looking too.
And then... nothing.
I guess the mullet, scarf and multiple pockets should have been a clear sign that this fellow would be dated very fast.

I still think he's an awesome character, I like him a lot more than say Cable actually.

I guess the mullet, scarf and multiple pockets should have been a clear sign that this fellow would be dated very fast. He switched from mullet to a shaved head at some point, but I don't know what his current look is. While he's definitely not a big star in the X-books, he more than nothing. There are a lot of X-books, so someone can rack up hundreds of appearances (as Bishop has) without being a core character. Ironically, although he was the first post-Claremont X-Man, a lot of his appearances are in Claremont's returns to the X-Men. Like when Morrison took over the flagship title, Bishop was a regular in X-Treme X-Men (the 3rd tier title Claremont wrote).

Bishop, with his original design intact (if the covers are to be believed), recently was the focus of an "X-Men Legends" two-parter drawn by Whilce Portacio. I think there was a Nocenti Longshot story right before that (sadly no Art Adams interiors though). I haven't read any of these, but I see the news articles about them every so often.

I’ve really enjoyed this topic. It feels like a CCF Christmas event (in a sense). So maybe a bonus, post-Christmas CCF Event. I’ll have to revisit some of these characters.

Those Legends stories are set in the X-Men past, not present, kind of continuity implants or untold tales from past eras of the X-Men, so the costumes/looks of characters are appropriate to what they were in that era, not the current designs. Part of the current Marvel zeitgesit where they are doing lots of stories set in their past (Patch era Wolvie stories on Madripoor, Venom Lethal Protector era stories of Eddie Brock, those Marvel legends, some Genis-Vell stuff, etc. usually inviting the writer (but not the artist) of that era to return so Hama for PAtch, David for Genis-Vell, Michelinie for Venom, DeMatteis doing Ben Reilly stories, etc. etc. -M
