I bought a bunch (10) of issues of Superman Family and they arrived Friday and I thought I would sit around and read them all weekend while sheltering from the hurricane. I had forgotten that a little Superman Family goes a long way and I’ve only read five or six stories from three different issues.

I was combing ebay for foreign variants of Batman: Death in the Family (and found one!) when I stumbled upon this gorgeous cover. Pimpinela is an Argentinian Classics Illustrated, and their covers are usually pretty monotonous (all with that same yellow background), but that Masque of the Red Death is truly breathtaking. I just had to have it.

Not a purchase, but cool stuff. Most of you know I'm working on a comic binding project of taking some of my favorite runs and giving them the HC treatment for my shelves instead of my long boxes. Here's this batch of goodies. Apologies if the pictures don't show up.... 1. A royal flush of Jonah Hex/All-Star Western comics. Five volumes (3 Jonah/2 ASW). I used message board favorite Darwyn Cooke's artwork to make the covers. 2. Chimera- A miniseries from CrossGen. While most of their universe was weirdly connected, they did have some solid product. This collects the 4 issue mini from Ron Marz & Brandon Peterson 3. The Fly- the fun Impact imprint from DC. Mike Parobeck's underrated series. I love his work.

Are you binding them yourself, or sending them out? Love the covers! Thank you! I send them out to a bindery to get professionally sewn. The covers and concepts I create and send them out to a graphic designer. I try to use as much art of the comic as possible. If the cover is cool, like The Fly and Chimera, I'll scan those in. I try to make them as interesting as possible. Come up with fun concepts, like the playing cards. I use outside art or find original artwork on the covers and back.

I remember getting a full run of all the $1 covers for what worked out to be 55c each in high-grade...I liked the 80 pagers most of all.

DC Dollar books and other giant sized comics of that era and before are my sweet spot. I will always want to find every single one of them. Think I’m getting close, but I haven’t done a good organization/cataloging in decades.

I can understand that, but sometimes I look at those books as the rock bottom of the art DC was delivering on a regular basis. It's mostly competent, but that's about it.

I need 76 across the entire line to have them all, mostly G.I. Combat and Superman Family issues-- it seems those books had the longest run as Dollar comics than any other title. World's Finest is in 3rd place for number of Dollar Comic issues.
There were 226 total books published as Dollar comics from 1977-1983 (earliest cover date is Mar/Apr 1977, on sale in Dec. 1976), including annuals and specials... and there were quite a few of those.
And I'll agree with MDG that a lot of these books were published when DC was at its pre-Crisis nadir. Nevertheless there are some good stories out there as well, namely in the runs of Adventure Comics, House of Mystery, Time Warp, and the DC Special Series.
