They bored me to tears. But it wasn’t drawn my Crumb. They were more recent.

Fixed it for you.

Not that I'll agree with Icctrombone about Liefield, but I'll come to his aid with regard to American Splendor. It bores me to tears also. But I'm not a fan of the navel-gazing genre in general.

Yeah, I'll also side with the the 'like Crumb but not Pekar' club; I've also sampled a bit of American Splendor and found it tedious.

I've never read American Splendor but I liked the film a lot.

I like certain pieces of American Splendor; not everything; but enough for a decent body of it. Our Cancer Year was more engaging, overall, as it combines both Harvey and Joyce's perspectives on things, and has more of narrative to things.
I'll take Harvey over a lot of alternative comics. Surly and depressed beats whiny and depressed any day!

I have never ever said that Liefelds art appealed to me, but his business acumen and making something out of nothing does.

But I'm not a fan of the navel-gazing genre in general. I don't get Pekar as navel gazing at all--more an observer of life around him and as someone who can look at himself objectively and unsympathetically. It's easy to get a negative opinion of him, then you realize any impression you get of him is from him--he ain't puttin' on any airs. Also, when you consider the stories he's telling, his pacing, compactness, and awareness where to end for maximum effect is pretty great. If you want to try something that's not Harvey-centric, there's this issue where he tell the story of a guy that sells bootleg t-shirts Yeah, I'll also side with the the 'like Crumb but not Pekar' club; I've also sampled a bit of American Splendor and found it tedious. I always enjoyed Pekar more on Letterman than I did on the page. I can't get through clips of Harvey on Letterman--I like Dave, but he feels like he's playing Harvey.
