Day Four ChoicesHow varied are your tastes? Are you a superheroes only sort of fan? Some might consider one of these two as their absolute number one, but do either Carl Barks or Paul Pope make your list? Pope: nope. Barks: Important figure, but nowhere near my top ten, and I am about as much an anti-Disney character guy as you will find (and that's the work he's best known for), so again, that will keep him at some distance from the top ten.

(...) Tardi I have almost no knowledge of, other than some people love him and he did a lot of war books. Pretty sure I own one of his Adèle Blanc-Sec books from Fantagraphics, but I don’t think I’ve read it. (...) Hm, I found the choice of Tardi kind of odd but figured you'd mentioned him because of familiarity with his work. Probably a better choice for another notable European creator to pair with Moebius would have been Hergé or Uderzo, or maybe Hugo Pratt (of Corto Maltese fame). You might have gotten some different answers. I’m mostly following the lead of the guy who started this in my other group. Think he was just doing a French thing. They’ll be other European creators in future days I’m sure.

Carl Barks: No. Haven't knowingly read much of his stuff though I imagine I must have come across it as a kid. Don't really get the appeal, but then I haven't really tried. Like Tarkantino, not really a Disney character fan.
Paul Pope: No. Don't know his stuff at all. I think I've liked the look of a few online samples but I have only a vague idea of his style and could be confusing him with someone else.

As for today's question: Carl Barks, maybe. It's kind of the same response I have for Moebius: I do love his work immensely, but I'm still not sure I'd put him in my personal top ten. No on Paul Pope. Also, he has done some superhero work (like Batman Year 100, which I really enjoyed), so he's not quite like Barks in that regard. Yeah, I think I’ve only read his superhero work, and little of it. I was reaching for some connective commentary and whiffed. The commentary and dialogue of the social group where this started doesn’t really fit here sometimes, so I’m improvising a bit and not just cut and pasting.

Barks--Not in my top 10 (favorites), but should probably be in a more objective top 10 (best)
Pope--I don;t know that I've ever read anything by him.

I like Paul Pope's stuff, but not significant enough to be top 10.
I am aware of Carl Barks but am not sure I have read anything by him. I had a few Disney comics as a kid but have no idea who did them.

Have no opinion on either one of them, so No to both.
I grew up solely with Marvel books, both superhero and licensed properties, so I never even saw any of the Barks Disney books until I was much older and they had little impact on me.

My top 10, whatever that ends up being, will be exclusively superhero creators, I'm just weighted too heavily there.
That said, Carl Barks is probably my number one diversion away from superheroes when I do step out a little, I have several of those modern Scrooge/Donald Fantagraphics collections and never tire of rereading them.
So no to this list, but again huge admiration. Paul Pope is a little after my time perhaps, so no there as well.

Some might consider one of these two as their absolute number one, but do either Carl Barks or Paul Pope make your list? Barks might make my top ten. His adventures were intelligent, funny, endearing, and full of personality at the same time. His art was great too, but (as usual) that isn't what qualifies someone for entry on my list. I'd also consider Don Rosa for entry. I prefer Barks' grand adventure stories, but I think Rosa does the quiet suburban life stories better than the man who inspired him. And of course there's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Paul Pope is now the second creator you've mentioned that I've never heard of. This challenge is beginning to make me feel bad about myself.

I love Barks, but 10 Top spots are so few with so many artists and writers around. He would easily slide into a Top 100 list, but Top 10 not very often.
I haven't read enoug by him for him to really judge, but what little I read of him did not make my Top 10.

Barks, no. I don’t really read funny animal books with a few exceptions. Paul pope is infamous for x rated content I think. No on that.

I love Barks but I don't think he would make my top 10, but he'd probably crack that top tier for consideration.
I've only read a handful of Paul Pope's stuff (Strange Adventures/Adam Strange in Wednesday Comics, Battlin' Boy-a young adult OGN, Batman Year 100, 100%) and I like him quite a bit, but he's wouldn't crack my top tier of creators.

Speaking of Tardi, I just noticed our local library had gotten this in, so I requested it and picked it up today... I hope to get to it in the next week or so. -M
