Day Thirty-One ChoicesI’m going back to cleanup names from a certain era of comics and ask you if Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, or Joe Hill are in your top 10. And I’m gonna see if a couple of random wildcards are lurking and ask if you have R Crumb saved for a spot or if you have good taste and are a true 20th century boy and ride for Naoki Urusawa. I've been waiting for Crumb to show up! Yes, he makes my Top Ten (and, of neccesity, knocks Dave Stevens off my list). As for the others, I've heard of Fraction but haven't read any of his work. Aaron, Hill, and Urusawa are complete unknowns (to me, that is).
Top Ten (comic books): Carl Barks, George Carlson, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, Gilbert Hernandez, Walt Kelly, Jack Kirby, George Perez* Top Ten (comic strips): Milton Caniff, Roy Crane, Fred Gottfredsen, George Herriman, Walt Kelly, Gary Larson, Charles Schulz, E.C. Segar, Cliff Sterrett, Bill Watterson

No to all of the day 31 choices, although Jason Aaron rates pretty high for me in general solely on the strength of Scalped. Also nice to finally see an indie guy, Crumb, come up - while I respect his influence, he's not a personal favorite. Urusawa I only know of by reputation, as I'd really like to read 20th Century Boys at some point.
My picks so far: John & Sal Buscema, Alan Moore, George Perez, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, Alan Brennert and Will Eisner.

Southern Bastards is one of my favorite books ever (I really wish it would return). And Scalped is pretty great. Aaron is up there, but not top ten. I like Fraction a fair bit, but nah. Again, with Joe Hill...I like Locke & Key but that's just not enough. I've not read that much by Crumb. Undergrounds remain a bit of a blind spot for me. I've never heard of Urusawa. Top Ten (Comic Books): Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Carl Barks, Darwyn Cooke, Warren Ellis, Will Eisner, Garth Ennis, Ed Brubaker, Wally Wood, Tim Truman Top Ten (Comic Strips): Walt Kelly, Bill Watterson, Berke Breathed, Gary Larson, Milton Caniff, Bill Mauldin, Al Williamson, Charles Addams, Herb Block, Stan Lynde.

Joe Hill had a couple good novels and stories early on but he has crashed and burned terribly. (I have not read his comics.)
Aaron and Fraction, no.
Urusawa, not familiar.
I have seen the film Crumb but I don't think I have ever read his work.

Fraction, Aaron and Hill are all hit or miss with me. When they are good, they are very, very good and when they are not, it can be pretty dire.
Crumb I respect more than like.
Urusawa is not a creator I am familiar with. Outside of Akira, Lone Wolf and Cub and 2-3 others, Japanese comics are a major blindspot for me.

I haven't read any Matt Fraction, but I have started reading some Jason Aaron and Joe Hill. It's early days as far as those creators go.
I haven't read a lot of Crumb. I liked that 90s documentary a lot. Naoki Urusawa is a giant. I'm tempted to have half my list full of manga creators.

Sampling a few more creators...
Paul Pope -- Heavy Liquid -- this is a late 90s mini series that Pope did for Vertigo. I like what I've read so far. Pope's work is very stylish. I definitely see myself wanting to read more of it.
Russ Heath -- G.I. Combat -- The Haunted Tank is such a ridiculous concept, but Heath draws it with such conviction that you can't help but believe in it. Heath is clearly an exceptional artist, but his work seems to be scattered over a number of genre titles, as opposed to having a distinct run I can really sink my teeth into.
Darwyn Cooke -- DC: The New Frontier -- this is such a fun series. Cooke's style borders on being too cartoony for superhero characters, but he won me over with his action scenes.
David Lapham -- Murder Me Dead -- I always wanted to read this side project of Lapham's. There was always a strong noir influence in Stray Bullets and he dials into that here. So far, so good.
Rick Veitch -- The One -- just started this. Nice art and an intriguing concept. A forgotten part of the 80s comic revolution.
Stephen Bissette -- Tyrant -- absolutely brilliant. It's a crying shame that Bissette never finished this. I have no doubt this would have been one of the best comics of the 90s if it had continued.
Frank Quietly -- All-Star Superman -- this gets a lot of hype. It's kept my attention, but so far Superman has been acting very weird. And he has a huge neck.

Day Thirty-One Response and Wrap—Up
Reminder that guest posters are welcomed, so please PM me if you have an idea for a slate one day.
I have sampled pretty much every Matt Fraction series and enjoyed them all enough to put them on the finish someday queue. I’ve only finished one or two of his runs though, so can’t put him high on a list yet. Fwiw, I like his wife’s writing too, Kelly Sue DeConnick.
Jason Aaron is probably one of my favorite current writers, but a victim of my usual problem, most of his runs are still in my queue to finish. Southern Bastards and Weird World and a few one-offs are all I’ve finished I think. Really want to start his Thor run soon.
Haven’t read any of Joe Hill’s novels yet, but his comics have all been good so far. Loved The Wraith and Basketful of Heads, and Locke & Key so far.
Love the documentary on Crumb but haven’t read much of his work yet. And Urusawa is a total blind spot that it looks like I should correct soon.
My list remains at 9. Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola Jeff Lemire Bernie Wrightson Matt Wagner Will Eisner

Day Thirty-Two Choices
Okay guys today I wanted to comic with a mixture of flavor even tho I kind of fear what’s left in lists is more vanilla but today I want to know if Emily Carroll, Alex Toth, Harvey Kurtzman, or Charles Burns are on your list.
I also am targeting a couple of people and wondering if Jim Aparo makes your list?

I really dig Kurtzman and Aparo, but neither is top 10 for me. I know Burns by name and some of what he's done but not read any of it. Emily Carroll I am unfamiliar with.
And Alex Toth makes ten. He's the one I have been holding a spot for. Alex Toth is Depth is my favorite comic youtube/podcast out there right now. Toth's sense of design layout, action economy, and use of black to contrast, set tone, and establish mood all blow me away and put him solidly in my top 10.
So my top 10 (10 slots filled) remains: Moebius, Joe Kubert, Darwyn Cooke, Milton Canniff, Frank Frazetta, Alex Raymond, Jeff Smith, Stan Sakai, Will Eisner and Alex Toth.
fait accompli

A threefer for me today: Alex Toth, Harvey Kurtzman, and Charles Burns are all on my list.
Never heard of Emily Carroll.
A lot of us took Aparo for granted in the 70s/80s, since he was always around. Not a favorite, but I appreciate a lot of what he did, esp his run on Phantom Stranger.
So far: Comic Books: Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Xaime Hernandez, Dan Clowes, Alex Toth, Harvey Kurtzman, Charles Burns
Comic Strips: Bill Watterson, Milton Caniff, Charles Schulz, Alex Raymond, George Herriman, Chester Gould, Roy Crane, Cliff Sterrett, Frank King, Ernie Bushmiller

There's one more artist who hasn't been mentioned yet who got very strong consideration for my top 10, and probably sits firmly at #11. I'll wait and see if that artist gets mentioned here, but they are a darling of our cover contests.

Burns and Carroll, no. Kurtzman and Toth, also no, but man do I love and respect their work. Aparo - *heavy sigh* - also no, but he's in that 'just short of top-10 category' like Kane and Garcia Lopez.
So my list in unchanged: John & Sal Buscema, Alan Moore, George Perez, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, Alan Brennert and Will Eisner.
