I think I'll add Colan to my list. The most recent work of his I read was that issue of Brubaker's Captain America that he won an Eisner for. Colan must have been 82 at the time and yet he produced a beautiful piece of work. Ploog's style has grown on me over the past few years. I thought it was too cartoony at first but now I can appreciate it. Morrow is a fantastic artist. Has Jeff Smith done anything since Bone? Don't know who Tillie Walden is, and still discovering Barks let alone Rosa. I absolutely adore Steve Rude. I would slot him alongside Adam Hughes and Kevin Maguire on my absolute favorites list. Is Erik Larsen still doing Savage Dragon? He feels a bit like that Sesame Street song "One of These Things," but man, fair play to keep publishing your book for so long.
EDIT: Forgot Phillips. Don't really like the Hellblazer stuff I've read lately, but he got a lot better by the time he started doing Criminal. Not a favorite, though.

Don't know who Tillie Walden is, and still discovering Banks let alone Rosa. I absolutely adore Steve Rude. I would slot him with Adam Hughes and Kevin Maguire on my absolute favorites list. Is Erik Larsen still doing Savage Dragon? He feels a bit like that Sesame Street song "One of These Things," but man, fair play to keep publishing your book for so long. Smith has done RASL (3 volumes), a Shazam mini for DC, and is currently working on Tuki, Vol. 1 is out, Vol 2 at the printer awaiting completion to ship and fulfill the Kickstarter for it. He has also helped organized and launch Cartoon Crossroads Columbus a growing cartoon festival (on the model of the European festivals like Angoulême) in conjunction with the Billy Ireland Museum out of Ohio State University which attracts major international cartoonist talent and supports local creators and creators of color and form the LGBTQ community as well. It's in its fifth or sixth year now and growing all the time, so has been quite busy since Bone, but since he doesn't do super-heroes per se, a lot of comic fans fail to take notice. -M

Day Twenty-Three ChoicesLet’s dream today. We already had Neil Gaiman as a candidate here so now it’s time to see if any of the artists make your top ten. This will be a two-day event with so many great artists working on Sandman. Fwiw, I consider Sandman the greatest series in the history of comics so far. Today I want to know if Sam Kieth, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran, Charles Vess, Mike Dringenberg, or P. Craig Russell are in your Top 10. I'm also going to throw in Chris Bachalo because he drew the first ever Vertigo comic. Day Twenty-Four ChoicesWandom Wednesday. No theme today, just ten creators who I hope everyone has heard of. Are any of the below in your top ten? Gene Colan, Erik Larsen, Gray Morrow, Sean Phillips, Mike Ploog, Don Rosa, Steve Rude, Jeff Smith, Dave Stevens, Tillie Walden And now I'm two days behind. I like all the Sandman/Death artists, but none make the cut. Though I really feel bad about Charles Vess, because he's super close. Gene Colan - Man...I feel a lot like a couple of others mentioned. If we were talking artists, then Yeah...he's probably in. Erik Larsen - I've read almost none of his work. It doesn't appeal to me. Gray Morrow - Another artist I really dig. But I can't include Colan so he doesn't make it. Sean Phillips - If I could include him with Brubaker I would because, while I love Brubaker & Epting, it's Brubaker and Phillips that really floats my boat. So he can have reflected glory. Mike Ploog - He's fine. But not even first tier for me. Don Rosa - Love his work, but Barks has to stand in for all duck men. Steve Rude - Again, possibly on my list of favorite artists. Tillie Walden - I've never heard of. Jeff Smith - I really love Bone. And it is just a fabulous accomplishment. So...I think that Jeff Smith works his way in to the list and knocks out Alan Brennart. Top Ten (Comic Books): Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Carl Barks, Darwyn Cooke, Warren Ellis, Jeff Smith, Garth Ennis, Ed Brubaker, Wally Wood, Tim Truman Top Ten (Comic Strips): Walt Kelly, Bill Watterson, Berke Breathed, Gary Larson, Milton Caniff, Charles Schulz, Al Williamson,

Gene Colan: Somewhere just off to the side of the Mount Rushmore of comic talents is the face of Gene Colan, who was one of the few Silver / Bronze artists who had a reputation as towering outside of superheroes (romance and horror comics for a start) as within that genre, like John Romita Sr. His only "failing" is that he offered a bizarre Spider-Man. That said, he falls out the top ten running, but he's comfortably in the top twenty. Erik Larsen: You must be joking. No x 1,000,000,000. Gray Morrow: Another absolute legend across so many genres/styles, but his paintings for book covers probably cut a larger path in memory...but not quite a top ten figure, so no. One day, I should launch a Top Ten Comic Book Painters list and see how that one turns out. Sean Phillips: no.Mike Ploog: no.Don Rosa: no.Steve Rude: Excellent, one-of-a-kind artist across the board, and his vintage-themed superheroes certainly set the path for Cooke's New Frontier, but he's still not in the top ten.
Jeff Smith: no. Dave Stevens: No.Tillie Walden: No.

I enjoy the works of many of these comic creators. It is great to see all the names in this contest and remind myself to check more works out.
For now, my list is currently:
Jack Kirby Jim Shooter Joe Kubert (Grant Morrison) (Alan Moore)
Morrison and Moore will be taken off if certain creators appear, as I already have my top ten written down, but I keep them here in case the ones I am thinking about are never listed as a choice.

Day Twenty-Four Response and Wrap—Up
I love Gene Colan’s art and loved seeing his stuff show up at so many different companies up until his last few years. Horror is perhaps my favorite genre in comics, and he was great there. Pretty much the same thoughts on Gray Morrow.
Not a big Larson fan, but admire his perseverance and love of the hobby.
Sean Philips is one of my favorite current artists. He and Brubaker are so great together.
Mike Ploog would make my artists only list. Every time I see his name I think of the deluxe signed version of his art book that I bought used online and the seller had ripped out his signature page before sending it.
Love Don Rosa but only room for one Duck artist in my top ten.
Steve Rude is amazing, and I’ve probably spent more money at his website than any other creator’s.
Dave Stevens would be on my top ten if life was fairer and he had more years to create. If I had space for posters, his would be in my walls. Need to make room for at least that Mr Monster one.
Tillie Walden has no right to be this good this young. Spinning was amazing and I need to get to the other books of her’s soon. I think she might be the youngest Eisner winner.
But all no's today for my top ten. Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola Jeff Lemire Bernie Wrightson Matt Wagner

Day Twenty-Five Choices
As I made these daily drops I'd cut some off to keep the size down each day and ended up with a bit of a hodgepodge of remainders from those lists. These are some who remain. Today Iet’s see if Kevin Huizenga, Juanjo Guarnido, Michael Golden, Alison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, Lewis Trondheim, Jim Sternako, or David Lloyd are in your top 10.
Also want to pay respect to one name cats Seth and Jason.
And going to ask if Stan Sakai is on your list.

Yes for Mike Ploog. When he wasn't doing the art on Swamp Thing or Werewolf by Night, I really couldn't enjoy them as much as when he did the art. This could possibly be my favorite comic book cover ever ....

Stan Sakai is one I have a place reserved for on the list, so yes.
Steranko and Golden are top tier for me, just not top 10.
Of the rest, I have limited exposure to their work. Lloyd I know from V fo Vendetta and liked that but haven't seen anything else that I a aware of. Juanjo Guarnido-I've read and imensely enjoyed the first volume of Blacksad but need to get to the rest.
Kevin Huizenga, Jason -unfamiliar with these two. Not sure I have seen their stuff
Alison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, Lewis Trondheim, Seth-I've read short works and samples from these creators and am familiar with their body of work, I just haven't read much of it.
So that now makes my top 10 (8 slots filled): Moebius, Joe Kubert, Darwyn Cooke, Milton Canniff, Frank Frazetta, Alex Raymond Jeff Smith, and Stan Sakai.

No to all, though Golden, Steranko, Lloyd, and Sakai are all creators whose work I appreciate. Never read anything by Bechdel, Seth, or Jason, and have never heard of Huizenga, Guarnido, Thompson, or Trondheim (I don't follow contemporary comics--or news stories about them--at all).
Top Ten (comic books): Barks, Gilbert Hernandez, Kelly, Kirby, Perez*, Stevens Top Ten (comic strips): Canniff, Herriman, Kelly, Schulz, Watterson
* provisional

I hold Golden, Sakai and Steranko in high esteem, but I'm still going to have to say no. And no to the rest of today's choices as well.
My list so far: John & Sal Buscema, Alan Moore, George Perez, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, and Alan Brennert

I love me some Blacksad. I appreciate David Lloyd. I want to read Sakai and Usagi, but never get very far. I'm, at best, lukewarm on Golden and Steranko. I've never read anything by any of the others. I've only recently started reading Usagi Yojimbo, though, and it's really excellent.
So far: Comic Books: Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Xaime Hernandez, Dan Clowes
Comic Strips: Bill Watterson, Milton Caniff, Charles Schulz, Alex Raymond, George Herriman

Never got around to read anything by Kevin Huizenga (who I instinctively want to call Huizinga, because that's the way that name is usually spelled over here).
Juanjo Guarnido: Would make my Top 20 of artists. He's close to that mythical Place 10 on my list as everything he's made, I've loved.
Michael Golden: He's good, but I'm not as big a fan as everybody else seems to be.
Alison Bechdel: Haven't read enough by her.
Craig Thompson: Haven't read anything by him, but a quick google and I'm very interested in Habibi.
Lewis Trondheim: I had considered him and I think he can get my spot 10. Between Maggy Garrison, Donjon, a great issue of Spirou, Texas Cowboys and many, many other things, he deserves a spot.
Jim Steranko: Love his work, not Top 10.
David Lloyd: Like a lot of his work, but generally more for the writing. He's a good artist (just to be clear), but not one of my favourites.
Seth and Jason: Like most cartoonist, only passingly familiar with their work.
Stan Sakai: Never got around to get really into his work. I've some issues and I enjoyed them, but never really dug in.
So my Top 10 so far: Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Jean Giraud, Matt Wagner, Bill Sienkiewicz, Lewis Trondheim.
