Sam Kieth, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran, Charles Vess, Mike Dringenberg, P. Craig Russell are excellent artists, hence why they worked on Sandman. I'm at a bit of a loss since I haven't read anything they've done since. I did read The Maxx and A Distant Soil back in the day. Chris Bachalo is also good. I was surprised when he went on to do mainstream superhero books.

I am not sure I am familiar with anything Dringenberg has done outside Sandman. If I've read anything else, I don't recall it, so it must not have made much of an impression. -M He apparently started with a bit of work in Kelvin Mace from Vortex comics back in the day, and then did some Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters. He did some of Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol stuff, and lots of covers and pin-up type work apparently. I think he has partial creator credit on Sandman since he created the look of many of the characters in those early issues. But yes, not a ton of comic work.

Day Twenty-Three ChoicesLet’s dream today. We already had Neil Gaiman as a candidate here so now it’s time to see if any of the artists make your top ten. This will be a two-day event with so many great artists working on Sandman. Fwiw, I consider Sandman the greatest series in the history of comics so far. Today I want to know if Sam Kieth, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran, Charles Vess, Mike Dringenberg, or P. Craig Russell are in your Top 10. I'm also going to throw in Chris Bachalo because he drew the first ever Vertigo comic. Most of these are great artists I could put on a top 10 of artists, but creators means something a bit different to me, so no to all.

He 100% created the visual look of Death based on a young Salt Lake City lady named Cinnamon.

He drew a series for Eclipse called Enchanter that looked quite nice. I think it was cut short there and then picked up by Express Press but I'm not sure if the story was completed there either.
(Edit: Enchanter was supposed to be an 8-issue series. Eclipse published three. Express published four (the fourth being drawn by Tatsuya Ishida), so it doesn't look like the series was ever finished.)

All excellent artists but no particular favorites. I love the look of Jill Thompson's art on Scary Godmother (though I've never read it). I don't like much from Sam Keith when he's not working with Bill Messner-Loebs, but that stuff is great.

Day Twenty-Three Response and Wrap—Up
Part of the appeal of Sandman was the change of pace and quite varied art styles. I’m not sure if Gaiman just got lucky or had studied each artist and knew what they could bring to their respective arcs and had it all planned out.
All fine artists, and a few that I go out of my way to find their work; Doran, Russell, and Vess. But none have enough work with deep personal attachments to make my top 10. The only possibility is likely Doran, if I ever read A Distant Soil and it becomes a top five or so book for me.
So again no additions to my list for now. Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola Jeff Lemire Bernie Wrightson Matt Wagner

No, although *heavy sigh*, it doesn't mean I don't really like Colan, Morrow and Ploog in particular. Also, we've already had Dave Stevens before.
Edited to add my list so far: John & Sal Buscema, Alan Moore, George Perez, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, and Alan Brennert.

Gene Colan, Erik Larsen, Gray Morrow, Sean Phillips, Mike Ploog, Don Rosa, Steve Rude, Jeff Smith, Dave Stevens, Tillie Walden No again, though some favorites: Colan, Rosa, Morrow. If I ever made the commitment to read Bone, Smith would probably be there too.
And one I never heard of.

Colan would be a top 10 artist though, probably.
Larsen: ugh Rude: no Smith: no
Not familiar with Rosa or Walden.

Gene Colan: No. Erik Larsen: God no. Gray Marrow: Will have to check if I ever read anything by him (quick check, don't think so)
Sean Phillips: Like him a lot, but not enough for Top 50 artist, nevertheless Top 10 creator. Mike Ploog: No.
Don Rosa: If Barks didn't make it on my list, Rosa won't. Steve Rude: No
Jeff Smith: I like Barks and Rosa more and they didn't make it. Nothing wrong with Jeff though. Dave Stevens: No
Tillie Walden: Don't think I've read anything by her, but a quick look does make me interested. Not on my Top 10, but at least worth checking out.
Edited: On the list: Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Jean Giraud, Bill Sienkiewicz, Matt Wagner

Gene Colan, Erik Larsen, Gray Morrow, Sean Phillips, Mike Ploog, Don Rosa, Steve Rude, Jeff Smith, Dave Stevens, Tillie Walden Okay, now I'm conflicted. Gene Colan is, hands down, my favorite comic book artist but even so, I don't think I'd put him on a list of Top Ten creators. Ditto the great Steve Rude. I also like Larsen, Morrow, Ploog, Rosa, and what I've seen of Jeff Smith, but again, not enough for any of 'em to make my list. Never heard of Phillips or Walden.
Top Ten (comic books): Barks, Gilbert Hernandez, Kelly, Kirby, Perez*, Stevens Top Ten (comic strips): Canniff, Herriman, Kelly, Schulz, Watterson
* provisional
Cei-U! When are we getting to the underground guys?

Everyone: I’d be cool if you maintained your list (max of 10 total; of the people nominated) in each post. Gives everyone a snapshot of your loves.
And yeah, I messed up and have had Stevens twice.

Gray Morrow is a favorite, but on the outside looking in at the top 10.
Gene Colan, Steve Rude, Dave Stevens, Sean Phillips, Don Rosa and Mike Ploog are all also top tier creators for me but not in the running for top 10.
Erik Larsen's stuff leaves me cold. Certainly talent there, just doesn't do things I am interested in reading or looking at.
Tillie Walden has produced some very interesting and innovative stuff. Spinning blew me away in particular, when I checked it out after it made a lot of best of the year lists and garnered a lot of award nominations a few years back, but I haven't checked out much else they have done.
That leaves Jeff Smith. Bone might be my all time favorite comic series. Rose, done with Charles Vess, is also a major favorite of mine. RASL is simply amazing as well. And the little bit of Tuki* I have read looks like it will rank up there with Smith's previous works. I haven't checked out his Shazam series yet though (own it just not read it). Smith is one of the cartoonists I was holding a place for in my top 10, so definitely makes it.
So that now makes my top 10 (7 slots filled): Moebius, Joe Kubert, Darwyn Cooke, Milton Canniff, Frank Frazetta, Alex Raymond and Jeff Smith (with Lemire and Brubaker having had probationary status; but I have 3 left who will definitely make it in if mentioned, so the they will be on the outside looking once if those creators get nominated, and I will drop them from this list moving forward).
-M
*I received volume 1 as part of the fulfillment of his last Kickstarter, I am just waiting on delivery of vol. 2 to read the entire series
