Day Fourteen ChoicesIt’s Strip Sunday! And bonus Alan time too. Are Charles Schulz or Milton Caniff on your list? How about Alan Davis or Alan Grant? Did you pass on Alan Moore? Are you a closet big Al Gordon, Alan Brennert, or Alan Kupperberg fan? Schulz and Caniff both belong on my Top Ten comic strip creators list. Of the others, Davis and Brennert are both favorites of mine (and Brennert and I are Facebook friends) but neither make the cut. So my list(s) currently look like: Top Ten (comic books): Barks, G Hernandez, Kirby, Perez Top Ten (comic strips): Caniff, Schulz, Watterson Cei-U! I summon the progress!

Never read any Milton Caniff as far as I know. Did read a bit of Schulz, but not that big of a fan.
I really like Alan Davis, he'd probably make Top 20. Top 10 not though.
Moore was already on my list.
None of the other Alan's are close.

Schulz would make my list if I were considering comic strip creators. I've enjoyed a lot of Alan Davis' work over the years, especially his UK work on Captain Britain, 2000 AD and Miracleman. I'm not really sure what he's done in the 2000s. The last run of his I read was on Excalibur. Has anyone read his ClanDestine stuff? Not really familiar with the other Alans. My choice for an Al would have been Al Williamson.

He was an Alfonso. I stuck to official Alans unless my research failed.

My choice for an Al would have been Al Williamson. Oh yeah, Williamson would be an excellent add to the running choices here for sure!

He draws some really beautiful books. Sadly , no to all on the list today.

Are you a closet big Al Gordon, Alan Brennert, or Alan Kupperberg fan? Despite earlier reservations regarding adding comic strip talents into the top ten, if I had to, Charles Schulz would and will get in--in other words, yes. His brand of illustration, character archetypes, often truthful (about the human condition), often sardonic humor was the foundation for so many humor comic strip creators to follow. Easily adaptable across numerous media platforms, which spoke to how just how effective and relatable his concepts were. He's one of the very few comic creators who transcended the medium to become recognized and naturally embraced by many among the average people.[/div] Caniff was a major influence--not just on comic strips, but books as well, with a personal influence on artists such as top ten member John Romita Sr. I have followed his work for most of time as a comic reader, and always believed he was one of few true legends, but he just falls out of making the top ten.
Trevor, i'm surprised you have not mentioned Alex Raymond (who would be an easy top ten pick for me) or Bob Montana (arguably the true creator of Archie Andrews and his most notable co-stars).
Davis, Grant, Moore, Gordon, Brennert and Kupperberg: all no.

Alan Brennert is a very emphatic yes. Alan Davis is a regretful no for now. The other Alans have produced work I like, but still no. As for the first two, even if I were considering comic strip guys they wouldn't rate for me: Caniff because I just haven't really read anything by him besides occasional samples seen in books about comics or online and Schulz because I never really thought Peanuts was *that* good.
Anyway, since I see others are citing their tallies so far, my picks so far are: Sal & John Buscema, Moore, Byrne, Simonson and Brennert.

I'm keeping strip artists off my list, but...
Shulz--actually Charlie Brown--was my first comic obsession, when I was 7 or 8 and still have a box of mid-60s paperbacks, dolls, banners somewhere.
Canniff would probably make my strip list of if I had a chance to read an extended run.

Caniff and Schulz are absolutely on my top 10 creators for comic strips. Canniff's influence on the look of comics a a whole (strips or books) is immeasurable. He was an influence and inspiration of a whole generation of artists, many of whom are making the top 10 lists of folks here. That influence and my love for Terry and Canyon are enough to make Canniff a crossover top 10 member.
You can call them all, but none of them mentioned make my list. I had a brief infatuation with Alan Davis' art when I was in high school and he was drawing Detective, and I still like it quit e bit, but I don't love it.
I another who would give Al Williamson strong consideration if he were officially nominated, but he would fall outside the top 10 but in that top tier
So my top 10 candidates thus far...Kubert, Moebius, Cooke and Canniff, with Lemire on the fringe of consideration depending ho else gets nominated.

Are you a closet big Al Gordon, Alan Brennert, or Alan Kupperberg fan? Caniff - 100% on my comic strip list. Terry, Steve Canyon and Male Call. Hell's yes. Might sneak on to a combined list on the right day. Schulz - Hard call. Just an incredible and important creator for so many years. Honestly too many. Peanuts went past its expiration well before it ended. Close, but likely not on my strip list. But maybe. I'll add but he could fall off. Alan Davis - No. Like his art a fair bit. What little I've read of his writing isn't good. Alan Grant - No. But generally like what I've read of his writing. Though some of that may be nostalgia. Alan Brennart - Wrote some of my favorite stories of all time. I'll add him, but he likely falls off as time goes on and I think of other creators. Al Gordon - I could come up with anything he worked on if it were to save my life. Alan Kupperberg - Top Ten (Comic Books): Gaiman, Moore, Barks, Cooke, Ellis, Brennart Top Ten (Comic Strips): Watterson, Breathed, Caniff, Schulz

Warren Ellis was on my list at one time.. Transmet is amazing, and I loved Doom 2099 as well... but I've realized since that Transmet is all he's got.. most of his other stories are either poor imitations or just generic 'edgy' sci fi.
Jeff Lemire I find hit or miss... not a bad creator, but nowhere near top 10

Day Thirteen ChoicesBrian Bolland, Brian K Vaughan, Brian Michael Bendis, Bryan Talbot, Brian Azzarello. That Brian guy Jim Rugg says exists and writes his comics? Yup it’s all about Brian. Or is it? Do any of these Brian’s make your list or is it a sad day like Brian’s Song. Are you all going to add yet another person who doesn’t draw to your list? Does Bendis’ decade of dominance get him in? Are Saga, Paper Girls, Y the Last Man, Ex Machina, and Runaways enough for someone to choose BKV? No one on here for my top 10. Bendis tells one story with one particular character really well, but he applied to so far too many characters. Bryan Talbot.... I liked 'Tales of One Bad Rat'... never read anything else. Brian K Vaughan tries too hard IMO, he definitely has his moments, but not a favorite. Saga and Runaways are great.. Y was terrible.. a few of his other things were pretty meh as well. Brian Bolland? I know the name, but nothing I've read comes to mind. Same with Brian Azzarello.
