Day Twelve ChoicesOk, going modern again. Are either Jeff Lemire or Warren Ellis on your list?
Lemire: No. I like some of the independent work I've tried but not so much that I'd rank him as a favourite.
Ellis: a reluctant No. He'd likely make my list of top ten comics writers but I need to save space for too many artists or all-rounders that I'll want to include

Day Twelve ChoicesOk, going modern again. Are either Jeff Lemire or Warren Ellis on your list? Warren Ellis - Oh yeah. Planetary and Transmetropolitan are two of my favorite books of all time. Along with a ton of other great stuff. Jeff Lemire - No. But he's moving up the ladder as time goes on. Big fan of Black Hammer and Sweet Tooth. So what I've got right now: Top Ten (Comic Books): Gaiman, Moore, Barks, Cooke, Ellis Top Ten (Comic Strips): Watterson, Breathed

There was a time when Ellis would have easily been top 10, but that time is past. Reading some of his more self-indulgent stuff published by Avatar (Strange Kisses/Killings etc.) does drag him down a bit as a lot of that stuff missed with me even though Planetary, Stormwatch/Authority, Injection, Trees, and others remain high on my all time list of favorites. And I will admit, some of the personal issues surrounding him do taint my feelings towards him. Separating the work from the artist, he's still top tier for me but outside the top 10, but if we were voting for the works and not the person I'd have an easier time of voting for it.
Lemire is one of my favorite creators of the 21st century. Trillium is the project of his where I stood up and took notice of him, which led me to other projects. He can do anything and everything well genre-wise, from slice of life stuff like Essex County to post-apocalyptic sci-fi like Sweet Tooth and Family Tree, to speculative sci-fi like Trillium to horror like Gideon Falls to super-heroes like Black Hammer, his Green Arrow run, the Black Label Question, etc. series and just about everything in between. He's also written the only Joker story I have liked in the past 20 years (also a Black Label book with Sorrentino on art). His art style is quirky but evocative and he works well when collaborating with other artists, especially when he teams with Andrea Sorrentino. He's on the fringe of top 10 for me, and depending who else shows up here might slip in for the purposes of this thread, so I will include him for now, but he might get bumped. There are some of my top 10 creators who I suspect might not get mentioned in this thread, but if they do they might bump Lemire to just outside the list.
So Top 10 so far (Moebius, Joe Kubert, Darwyn Cooke, Jeff Lemire (tentatively)

Jeff Lemire — No.
Warren Ellis — Read few of his comics. Know his writing primarily from the first season of Castlevania and that X-Men anime. I'm not a fan.

Holy crap, I honestly didn’t think that anyone wouldn’t know who Jeff Lemire is.
He’s been the best thing in comics since ~2010 imho.

I'll have to admit at first I didn't recognize his name, but then I looked up what he's worked on and realized he was the original writer on DC's The Terrifics, and his run on that is one of the only modern titles I've truly enjoyed in a very long time. Not seeing a lot else by him I would probably be interested in picking up, but again thought he did a great job on that book.

Holy crap, I honestly didn’t think that anyone wouldn’t know who Jeff Lemire is. He’s been the best thing in comics since ~2010 imho. Not sure why you'd think that; he's produced a pretty respectable amount of comics over the past 15-ish years and he's picked up a fair bit of critical acclaim and a number of awards for his work. As to whether he's the best thing in comics recently, I can't really make an assessment on that because I haven't read enough of his output - although what I have read (mainly the Essex Trilogy) didn't set my world on fire. That said, I am interested in reading his various Black Hammer series.

Day Twelve Response and Wrap—Up Jeff Lemire is probably my most modern/current yes. He’s pure gold in writing and art. Just phenomenal work on Essex County, Gideon Falls, Sweet Tooth, Frankenstein, JL Dark, Hawkeye, Descender, Black Hammer, Mazebook; and there is a ton of his stuff I haven’t made it to yet. He’s so prolific that he’s currently on my best, favorite, and desert island lists.
Warren Ellis writes some amazing stories. I’ve loved Planetary and The Authority, Nextwave, and the bits of Hellblazer and Transmetropolitan I’ve started. Plan to read a lot more of his work that is populating my piles. He’s not top 20 for me yet, but as I read more, he may climb into it depending on how well he apologizes/repairs things from his recent sexual coercion sins.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola Jeff Lemire

Day Thirteen Choices
Brian Bolland, Brian K Vaughan, Brian Michael Bendis, Bryan Talbot, Brian Azzarello. That Brian guy Jim Rugg says exists and writes his comics?
Yup it’s all about Brian. Or is it? Do any of these Brian’s make your list or is it a sad day like Brian’s Song.
Are you all going to add yet another person who doesn’t draw to your list? Does Bendis’ decade of dominance get him in? Are Saga, Paper Girls, Y the Last Man, Ex Machina, and Runaways enough for someone to choose BKV?

Bolland is a fabulous artist. If he'd done more interior work, he'd have a crack at my list. Talbot, I mostly know from his 2000 AD work. I'm a big fan of Nemesis the Warlock. Brian Azzarello, I only know from 100 Bullets. BKV, I only know from Y: The Last Man and Saga. Bendis, I only know from Daredevil. I like all of these dudes. Just haven't read enough.
