As I read more of Cooke, he could potentially creep into a top 10, but I don;t know who he'd replace.
Perez is a very good artist, but never really clicked w/ me.

Day Eleven Choices … are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10?
Both are very talented and I love their art, but no. Cooke's The New Frontier is the only exposure I got to his work, and while I loved it, it's still a one-shot thing. Perez's work I also like a great deal, but I never bought a book just because it had Perez art. During my formative years I never tried to draw like him. I view him as one of the best reliable and consistently good mainstream artists in the biz, but there isn't much room in that top ten list!

Day Eleven ChoicesToday we going back to a classic 2 piece after a couple of groups and we going to keep it to a couple of people who can really draw. Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10? George Perez - Heck yeah! A very easy call. Darwyn Cooke - I like DC: The New Frontier, but that's basically the only thing I've read by him. So, no.

I might put Perez on but not Cooke. I guess my main criterion (besides actually liking their work) is that the creator have wide-ranging output, and not be known for just one thing.

Cooke should be best known for Parker. But yeah, his life was cut way too short so I’m not sure he has enough product out there for top ten.

Perez never wowed me. There...I said it. He was consistently good though but his style always felt very cookie cutter to me. Don't get me wrong, it was perfect for comics but I never read anything that I felt had an impact on me compared to other creators.
Cook's style I enjoy a lot but I don't think I put him in a top 10.

I would really urge you to read both his Solo issue (which has become perilously close to being my favorite single issue of all time) and his adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker novels. They are just beautiful comics.

Slam_Bradley, it looks as if our local library has the Parker adaptations. I'll check 'em out!

Cooke: If we aren't including strip creators (and I've decided I'm not) then Yes. New Frontier is lovely. But his issue of Solo and his Parker adaptations are just absolutely beautiful comics. And I've finally forgiven him for being involved in Before Watchmen. So what I've got right now: Top Ten (Comic Books): Gaiman, Moore, Barks, Cooke Top Ten (Comic Strips): Watterson, Breathed

Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10? Cooke's DC - The New Frontier was and remains essential, non-continuity superhero work, but even that does not lift him up to the top ten list.
Perez: Logan's Run, The Avengers, The New Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and History of the DC Universe. That's more than enough legendary, often game-changing work to rocket him to the top ten, so an obvious yes.
My list so far:
John Romita Sr. John Buscema: Neal Adams O'Neil Thomas Wolfman Perez

Cooke is easily top 10 for me. I'd buy anything he was involved with with 1 exception (the Watchmen sequels) and even with that, I might eventually break down and get those knowing I will not get to experience any other new Darwyn material ever again. But yes, Parker, Twilight Children, New Frontier, Catwoman, Spirit, Solo, etc. all delight me each and every time I pick them up to read, and I have never experienced a Darwyn story I didn't like on some level, usually on all levels. There's very few creators I can say that about.
Perez would have easily made my top 10 if I were doing this as a 21 year old. As a 52 year old, I still consider him in my top tier of creators, but not in my top 10.

Yes for Perez. He cemented his place with the published JLA/ Avengers book. Cooke has a nice style but I missed the boat on his work. I discovered him later and it seems he mostly did DC work and many of their characters are lackluster.

Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10? If I'd read more of Cooke's work than just the magnificent New Frontier, he's be a strong contender. As it is, no.
As for Perez, I'm so crazy about his art that I'm going to break my own rule and add him to my Top Ten with the proviso that he may get bumped later on.
Top Ten (comic books): Barks, G Hernandez, Kirby, Perez Top Ten (comic strips): Watterson

Cooke is great, but I don't know that he has enough work to be in my top 10.

So summing things up so far, of all the choices presented so far, 3 would crack my top 10:
Moebius, Joe Kubert and Darwyn Cooke.
A handful would crack what I call top tier creators in my personal pantheon, not making the top 10 but definitely rounding out my top 25, and those would be Neil Gaiman, Jack Kirby, Carl Barks, Mike Mignola, Walt Simonson, George Perez, Alan Moore and maybe John Buscema on the strength of his adventure stuff rather than super-hero stuff, and maybe Miller.
If we're talking strips, Watterson is definitely top 10 and Breathed top tier but outside my top 10.
The rest would all fill out lower tiers, mostly solid creators I respect and often life, but who either miss as often as they hit with me or I am just not as familiar with as I should be to make an accurate assessment.
