Nobody known just for writing or art is going to make my list, period. To be in my Top Ten, they have to be the complete package (like Barks, Beto, or Kirby).
Cei-U! I summon the line drawn in the sand!
Well, I see your point but many of the names you use never wrote something as good as Moore or Thomas or Wolfman. I might give you Moore, but I can come up with easily a dozen single stories by Barks that are better than everything Wolfman wrote combined.

Steve Gerber — I love Howard the Duck, but not that much.
Russ Heath — No.
Bruce Timm — I like his style as interpreted by Japanese animators more than his style unfiltered.
Paul Dini — No.
Gerry Conway — No.
Denny O’Neil — No.
Roy Thomas — No.
Marv Wolfman — No.

Day Ten ChoicesSome always have G.I. Joe on their minds, maybe especially the animated series. Today I’m asking if any of these writers or artists who worked even a day on the OG cartoon are on your top 10 list: Steve Gerber, Russ Heath, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Gerry Conway, Denny O’Neil, Roy Thomas, or Marv Wolfman. Didn’t know they worked on it? Well now you do!
Gerber: Yes. Possibly my favourite comics writer after Moore.
Heath: No. Too many war comics for me. If he had done more fantasy work, e.g. in the vein of the Son of Satan fill-in issue he drew, I might have to include him.
Timm: No, not a fan of his style with those top-heavy physiques on the male heroes.
Dini: No, don't think I've read a single page of his work.
Conway: No, a very average superhero writer, to my mind.
O'Neil: No, haven't read much and have never felt much interest in trying his famous Batman or Green Lantern runs, apart from the Neal Adams artwork on Batman.
Roy Thomas: No, although he's written some of my favourite individual comics, I'm pretty sure there are ten other creators I'd have to rank ahead of him.
Wolfman: No. In the 70s and for a long time afterwards I would have said yes, on the basis of ToD. But nothing else he ever did came close to reaching that level, for me. His superhero work is more on a par with Claremont or Conway, i.e. competent but middling.

Day Nine ChoicesLet’s talk about Legends today. Like Mike Mignola. Geof Darrow . Walt Simonson. John Byrne . Art Adams . Paul Chadwick. Mike Allred. Dave Gibbons. And if you’re bummed you didn’t have Frank Miller on, here is your second chance! I want to know if any of these creators who were part of Dark Horse’s Legend imprint are in your Top 10. Simonson and Byrne would be close to my top 10... Simonson higher up than than Byrne, but even though he's a prick he did some good stuff. Mignola I can appreciate, but I've never really totally got into. Same with Allred and Gibbons... they wouldn't surprised me to be on a list for others, just not my jam. I don't think the others I've read enoughof to have much opinion one way or another.

Didn’t know they worked on it? Well now you do! Now you're talkin!! Roy Thomas and Marv Wolfman... 100% yes. I think the Marvel owes just as much to Thomas as it does to Stan and Jack to be honest....without his stewardship and appreciation of history, I wonder if the shared universe ever would have really made it. Wolfman gets enough points just for NTT, but he's written plenty of other great stuff as well. Denny O'Neil caused more harm than good, I think. Steve Gerber I just don't really get... doesn't do anything for me. Conway never stuck me as anything more than a staff writer. I don't think I have an opinion on Russ Heath. Timm and Dini... that's an interesting one. Far and away the best animated version of any superheroes, really.. but that's not a comic, is it? They might be on a list (as one slot, not two) for best handlers of superheroes, but not sure they're on same list as comic creators. So my definites so far are Gaiman, Thomas, Wolfman, Barks, Pini.. that's 5. two other definites in my head for sure that haven't been in the thead yet. The last 3 spots are pretty fluid depending on my mood.

Same here, I've a pretty solid Top 5 (Gaiman, Moore and Giraud are the ones from those that have been mentioned so far), then 3 that are usually there but the specific order tends to shift and then a whole bunch of people that I still will buy most everything from that comes out and they are not in a specific order so they move in and out of the Top 10 as moods change. For this exercise I've nailed it down to 9 people, but the 10th is still undetermined (I've mentioned Tardi as a potential 10th spot for now).

Day Ten Response and Wrap—Up
Denny wrote some great stories and is so important for his editing and leadership, and Marv wrote some books that I'll love to the day I die, but both only maybe top 50 for me.
Gerber is right on the cusp for me. Shamefully, while I love the solid amount of Man-Thing and Howard I've read, I was like 12 when I last read it, so it’s long been in my mountains of regina for a proper re-read. Fully expect Gerber to be in once I read it as an adult, but I wasn't a very mature 12 year old, so can't really commit to top ten until I properly read it again as an ‘adult’.
The others are top notch, but none worked on stories that are special for me. So for now, no additions today.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola

Day Eleven Choices
Today we going back to a classic 2 piece after a couple of groups and we going to keep it to a couple of people who can really draw. Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10?

Post by EdoBosnar on Apr 7, 2022 7:48:04 GMT -5
Perez is an easy yes. Cooke is a provisional yes - depending on some of the names you throw at us later, he might get pushed back into that "just didn't make the cut" category.

Darwyn Cooke moves in and out of my Top creators, mostly on the strength of Parker. He's not in my Top 9, so probably won't make the Top 10.
Perez: No, like him wel enough, just not close to Top creators for me.
