David Mazzucchelli — Apparently, the only work of his I've read is one issue of the original Marvel Star Wars and his portion of Superman and Batman: World's Funnest. I signed Batman: Year One out of the library several years ago, but never got around to reading it.
Neal Adams — He's borderline. He's an amazing illustrator; even his recent work, beneath the atrocious digital colouring, is solid. But the fact that he's gone the George Lucas route with his old work has left a nasty taste in my mouth.

Neal Adams has some great stuff and some meh stuff.. maybe a top 10 artist, but not a top 10 creator. My criterion is , does that name make me buy the book ?

Day Eight Response and Wrap—Up
At first, I thought it’d be a big reach for anyone to have Mazzuchelli in their top ten. I mean, he’s the artists on two books in my top five books of all-time, Born Again and Year One. That’s pretty darn impressive, no other artist has multiple books in my top twenty probably. But it’s just two books, he’s not had a ton of comic output, and I’ve read little to none of his other stuff. But apparently two of his other works are like ‘greatest book ever’ level for many people; so having three or four books in someone’s top ten could easily qualify someone. Those other two books are Asterios Polyp and City of Glass. I have both on order.
Neal Adams is a tough case. Now, I can ignore the poor quality of his recent work, and his sometimes strange beliefs, and his serious skills at asking for money. He’s like 80 years old after all. And his heyday where he kinda changed the industry was a bit before my time.
But his art for a few decades there was beautiful, and what he did for the comic creator community can’t be overstated. He does have an ego, and is good at taking credit for all the characters he had a hand in creating, but I don’t think he oversells himself when it comes to helping creators. His work in unionizing creators, getting original art to be returned, and getting credit to Superman’s creators are enough to make him a legend even without the art and creations.
For now, he’s in that growing group just outside my top ten.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore

Day Nine Choices Let’s talk about Legends today.
Like Mike Mignola. Geof Darrow . Walt Simonson. John Byrne . Art Adams . Paul Chadwick. Mike Allred. Dave Gibbons.
And if you’re bummed you didn’t have Frank Miller on, here is your second chance!
I want to know if any of these creators who were part of Dark Horse’s Legend imprint are in your Top 10.

A lot of great comic book artists (and John Byrne Sadly none of them quite make the Top 10 for me. As a kid, Art Adams would have easily made it.

John Byrne and Walt Simonson - yes (they would in fact be my top two if we're just talking about art). The rest, no.

Darrow: no.
Simonson: Highly creative, stylized talent, but he's in no way a top ten creator. When I read "Top ten creator," I'm thinking major, historic or transformational force in the industry with far more positives than negatives, and Simonson does not reach that level, so the answer is no.
Byrne: No x1,000,000,000. One of the most overrated artists in the medium's history and received far more credit than he ever deserved for the success of the revived (or "new") X-Men. That, and his amateurish, butchering Photoshop job (and laughable scripting) of Star Trek screencaps kicks him down a few more rungs of the creator ladder.
Art Adams: no.
Chadwick: no.
Allred: top ten? No.
Gibbons: no.

All good choices, but none I even considered. Walt Simonson may be the definition of a "pro" in the post-silver age (and from my experience a heckuva nice guy), but for all that, I probably haven't read 20% of his work. Mike Allred is a fine comics artist, especially in terms of conveying character... I can probably say a couple nice things about everybody on this list (except Adams who never really clicked with me), but not in my top 10. For an idea of the folks I identified when Trevor started this, here's how they break out in terms of decade of first publication: 1930s: 2 1940s: 2 1950s: 1 1960s: 2 1970s: 1 1980s: 2 The two mentioned so far: Jack Kirby Jaime Hernandez

Ok. Byrne is top 10. He is savaged these days because he’s a difficult person and has said and done some. Truly stupid things. But his talent is totally responsible for the success for the X-men. That book was bi- monthly when he took it over and close to cancellation again. His Superman was really good and his FF revived the book. Step back and judge the performance and not his crappy personality.
The rest no. When you suggested top 10, I actually wrote out ten names. I can’t keep saying yes and have 40 names at the end of this thread.

All of these guys are superb artists. I think there's a danger in dismissing great artists because we're focusing on the ten best. Aside from Claremont on X-Men, Byrne was the first creator whose work I recognized and bought solely because he worked on the book. Simonson and Adams were also guys whose artwork appealed to me as a child. As an adult, I probably respect Chadwick and Gibbons' penciling ability the most. Darrow is also excellent. I haven't revisited Allred's Madman stuff lately, but Madman was a series I actively followed in the 90s. In fact, I bought a lot of the Legend books when they first came out. I remember being a huge fan of Next Men as it was being released. I'm sure a lot of people are more familiar with these guys' work from the decade before, but 1994 was pretty much the sweet spot in my collecting. I still remember the Legend logo and how it felt to hold the books. It was a short-lived imprint, but in many ways it was a precursor to the stuff that's put out today through Image and IDW.

I was wondering when Byrne would come up. Yes, absolutely, #1. My favorite artist almost since I began reading comics (picked up my first one of his at age 7) and a great writer as well.
Simonson, also yes.
Geof Darrow and Paul Chadwick, don't know enough.
I like Mignola's art and enjoyed some Hellboy, but not a top 10.
I love Arthur Adams' art and have a signed print of his on my wall but he hasn't done enough to be considered a top 10 creator.
Gibbons is good and of course there's Watchmen, but other than that I've only seen Doctor Who. I can't call someone a top creator for one book.
I hate Allred's art.

The closest would probably be Simonson. I had to Google who Darrow is. Apparently I've read a few of his jobs, but have zero memory of any of them.

Mignola, Simonson and Chadwick would be on the fringe of my top tier creators but wouldn't make the top 10.
I like Allred, Gibbons, and Adams (especially his Gumby stuff) work well enough, but none resonate with me the way a top creator does.
Byrne to me is that youthful infatuation you had as an adolescent that when you look at as an adult you ask yourself wtf was I thinking?
