Ra's al Ghul on the other hand, absolutely dominates his first cover: A masterful cover working on so many levels.

Another great debut cover by Adams: The first appearance of Tarantula was another Romita standout:

You can't go wrong with either of these, no matter which is his (its?) official first appearance...

I'm sure there are worse ones, but perhaps the most unfortunate let down given this cover introduced not only The Fantastic Four, but kicked off the Marvel Age of Comics. I know that Lee was cautiously dipping his toe in the water when it came to his decision to revive the superhero feature, but it really, really shows. There's nothing bold or grand about this cover; the team are tiny and limp (The Invisible Woman's "I can't hide fast enough!" doesn't do her any favours, Mr. Fantastic is feebly tied and looks more anorexic than stretchy, The Thing's back being to the viewer wouldn't be an issue if it were being played as a selling point, but this doesn't seem to be the intent - only The Human Torch really impresses. The colour is bland and the fact that there were two editions of this cover with added/lessened background characters suggests that Lee was looking for something to juice this cover up. As a change, it isn't much. Kirby nailed their first appearance in costume with the third issue, but this isn't really a cover which deserves to be homaged over and over again on a visual level.

Of course the age old question is what is a debut?
The first literal appearance or a full comic where the new character is featured?

Avengers Annual #10's cover wasn't very impressive - by Al Milgrom not Michael Golden and only a tiny head shot of Rogue. That cover is a case of reverse false-advertising!

Only the unnecessary, ham-fisted #1 mars this impossible-to-avoid-buying cover:

And, in the running with many another ill-thought-out debut cover, is this hot mess, from the overworked Ernie Chan. No, it's not Conan at all, as you can tell from his pose, his hairdo, his furry skorts, and the slave girl in a bikini at his feet. Oh, and nothing says sword-and-sorcery like a fuchsia background! PS: Bought it anyway, probably for the Batman Hostess ad.

Like Wolverine, he appeared on the last page of the previous issue, but we can still count this right?
