I keep seeing pictures of Spider-man #129 , the first appearance of the Punisher, and think, what a nice clear first appearance. It features him and it views like a big event. Key issues are made better when the new character is displayed proudly on the cover. Of course , you don't know which characters will be break out hits so the cover might not reflect them. The First John Constantine appearance is a secret on this cover. Another good debut cover: First modern Black Knight shows him prominently on the cover of Avengers # 48 Which covers do you think are great debut covers? Which ones do you think are poor debut covers? Please post covers if you can.

I thought Barbara Morse's first appearance as Mockingbird was really nicely done.

among the worst? Black Canary's new costume reveal: (and yes, I get that it's an homage to Robin's 1st appearance. . it's still terrible) But at least it inspired this incredible Brian Bolland cover over on Action years later.

among the best (and purposefully not going for "iconic" character / covers) X-men 111. . .1st appearance of Arcade: Isn't that Banshee? I think Arcade's first appearance was in Marvel Team-Up #65.

That's not Arcade's first appearance, BTW. He appeared in Marvel Team-Up fighting Spider-Man and Captain Britain before that one (but is not on the cover).

I know I've mentioned this before, but this is Zatanna's first appearance. Good luck figuring that out from the cover!
Ra's al Ghul on the other hand, absolutely dominates his first cover:

Another good debut cover: First modern Black Knight shows him prominently on the cover of Avengers # 48 The Black Knight first appeared in Avengers #47. No, Dane Whitman first appeared in #47. He didn't assume the Black Knight identity until this issue.
Cei-U! I summon the technicality!

Yes, it is Banshee; he and all the X-Men were hypnotized by Mesmero and turned into carnies. Arcade would first appear on an X-Men cover with issue #123, which I remember not buying when I saw it in the Ontario town of Gananoque during a camping trip with my parents. The reason? I had no money left! (Oh, the indignity).

The debut of the Barbara Gordon iteration of Batgirl is a keeper.

Whereas the text on the cover of Detective Comics #359 works (you can almost hear William Dozier speaking those lines), here the text gets a bit in the way of this lovely Gray Morrow cover for the debut of Star-Lord.

The first appearance of the Lieutenant Marvels is memorable. But it has nothing on the debut of Mary Marvel
