As I was reading Sherlock Holmes vs Harry Houdini, I was noticing the house ads for the various properties that Dynamite was releasing (Doc Savage, The Shadow, Lone Ranger, the Gold Key superhero books). I was wondering if anybody here read those, or similar books, and has any suggestions on which ones are worth checking out. I’m not concerned with them being out of character (as I have no frame of reference anyway), but I don’t want stories set in a different time period from the original (no Lone Ranger 2099 type stuff, for example). I’d really prefer if they were from the last couple decades, but for sure nothing from before the 90s.

The 8 issue Doc Savage runs the gamut with stories th rye ought the decades. Starts in the 40's, then progresses forward ending in the 2014. Has the right feel and tone and shows how Doc maintains a team around him as time goes on. Nice interesting take with good artwork.

The Shadow and Spider books were very good and the Spider adapted the whole Black Police epic, from the pulps, where the Spider fought a fascist force, in New York, over three issue of the pulp magazine. That was in the Masks mini-series, which includes other pulp heroes, aiding The Spider. Matt Wagner did some writing on The Shadow, which was highly praised. I haven't gotten around to reading all of it, yet. Dynamite did a pretty good job by the pulp heroes and the King Features heroes.

Written by Chris Roberson with art by Bilquis Evely. I really enjoyed it. There is a trade collection available.

I typically haven't cared for Dynamite's pulp comics as a whole, aside from Wagner's. That said, his take on the Shadow doesn't interest me all that much (even though I loved the Grendel/Shadow crossover) … maybe because he's overfamiliar? I'd love to see his take on the Black Bat, Phantom Detective, Captain Zero, some of the others.

I read a few of those as they were first coming out.. they were decent, but ultimately I ended up deciding they weren't worth the money new comics cost.. I'd read them on Hoopla or from a $1 bin for sure though

I liked the first 2 Lone Ranger series. Some of the Green Hornet series were good.

Much of Dynamite's Tarzan and John Carter, Warlord of Mars is quite good with some really incredible artwork. Flash Gordon was fun as well, eventually teaming him with his fellow team mates Mandrake, Lothar, Phantom and Jungle Jim in forming an ersatz Defender's of the Earth.

I like the idea of reviving the pulp heroes but so far the artwork has kept me away. Maybe the writing would too, but I haven't even got that far.
Not that the art is necessarily so bad in every single comic, but none of the ones I've looked at have attracted me, from the Dynamite ERB stuff to the Dark Horse (or whoever has the rights now) REH comics. One of these days I hope there'll be somethng that looks so good to me I won't be able to resist, something I won't be reading solely because I like the pulp character.

Marvel have the rights to Conan back, and have had since 2019.

I generally liked what Dynamite did with the Lone Ranger. I particularly liked Mark Russell's run.

Ah, yes. I see they are using Conan - in the Avengers, of all places! What about Kull or Solomon Kane - has Marvel done anything with them since acquiring the rights to REH's characters again?
