I can't see your cover, Kirby. Which issue is it? No. 8. It shows up fine for me but I'll see if I can find another image. The second image is coming through fine for me.

Aw, when I saw the title I thought it would just be a general theme of keys. Ah well, since I don't have an idea of this one at all I'll post the very first comic I ever got:

Magnus Robot Fighter #11, with the black boots that Russ Manning intended him to have. In issue #1 Russ just drew the outline of the boots and expected the colorist to fill with black. That didn't happen. So the interiors always showed Magnus with white boots, while Russ' painted covers had him in black boots.

Wally Wood's totally gonzo, paranoid series of an alien enemy invading America. Started out as Total War, then switched the title to MARS Patrol: Total War, to better emphasize the heroes, the Marine Attack Rescue Service. Probably owes a lot to the Operator 5 series of pulp novels, featuring the Purple Invasion, where a fascist enemy invades America and Jimmy Christopher, aka Operator 5 leads a resistance. The same publisher also produced The Spider, who faced the fascist Empire State, across a trilogy of pulp novels.

ps For clarity's sake, I assume we are limiting this to those comics carrying the Gold Key banner, since the company was actually Western Printing and Lithography, which produced the Dell line of comics, from its inception, until the two groups split, leading to the Gold Key name, before rebranding it under their Whitman name (used for Western's line of activity books, puzzles and games), in the late 70s.

Yeah, that. Long as it says Gold Key on the cover, I'm good.

I've got to admit that I prefer the white boots, which look more futuristic to me. And I've got to wonder why Manning would have expected colorists to fill in blacks; isn't that the inker's job? Heck, Manning was lucky they didn't color them magenta. If there's one thing that bugged me most about Western Publishing, it was how damn much they seemed to use 100% magenta in their coloring. That's something you just never saw at Marvel or DC, for good reason, to my thinking.
