If you ever end up as my Secret Santa, Slam, I'm gonna try and find the 227 issues of Marvel UK's The Transformers to send to you!

Unless you're old enough that Transformers weren't a thing in your life or were some toy your little cousins played with. Spoken like a Decepticon!

No love for Rusty and Big Guy or Biotron? -M It is about GIANT bots, so possibly Big Guy might be allowable and Biotron only if you vote for when he was actually the Micronaut's ship (but is he a giant bot or just a ship? Cant remember if he acted/fought on his own or just flew them around?) and NOT when he was more or less human sized. Considering a person could ride inside Biotron's chest (the toy), I think he qualifies as a giant bot. -M

Given Unicron would obliterate all of the other choices, the vote for Transformers should be higher... Unless you're old enough that Transformers weren't a thing in your life or were some toy your little cousins played with. Whether or not you grew up with them, the original toys and basic premise of robots that disguise themselves as ordinary vehicles are worthy of serious respect. The actual substance of the cartoon? Well, that's another matter. You were either an '80s kid or you weren't. I personally love and actively collect the toys, but watch the movie once a decade and avoid the cartoons otherwise.

Not sure how many people know this, but Transformers were originally going to be a Mego product, an extension of the license that they had to bring Micronauts to the US market, but with Mego's financial problems, they were on the way out, and Marty Abrams helped broker the deal to being them to Hasbro since he had friends there. If they had come out from Mego, it would have been a vastly different path for them, as it was Hasbro who developed most of the concepts for the animated series and American versions of the characters. With Mego, they would simply have been transforming Japanese vehicle toys along the lines of the interchangeable Micronauts. -M

Actually (believe it or not) it was Marvel (presumably Bill Mantlo?) who developed most of this at Hasbro's request. If I recall correctly, Hasbro decided the robots were alive in order to save a few bucks by not reproducing the pilot/driver figures that accompanied the original Japanese Diaclone versions, as well as decided to throw together Diaclone and Micro-Change toys into one series, but Marvel did most of the rest from there.

Yeah, I missed all the giant robots somehow or other: too old by the time the 80s cartoons came around - Transformers, etc - and I never saw any of the older Japanese ones as a kid, though I did see most of the Japanese monster movies on tv, Godzilla, Mothra, and the rest.
Even the Marvel comics giant robots, the Sentinels, never really grabbed me - or, my impression is, Marvel fans in general.

Goota go with Jaianto Robo, aka Giant Robo, aka Johnny Sokko (that's the kid, by the way). Pure mayhem, with obnoxious brats put in danger, for fun! Two missile thumbs up!

I remember seeing one of those largish metal Shogun Warriors in the late '70s and thought it was pretty high quality. Also saw the Godzilla with the tongue or flame that popped out I think. They showed various Japanese 'kaiju' movies on some of the independent U.S. tv channels we got along with old movie serials of Captain America and Rocketman sometimes, but also Shirley Temple, Our Gang, Topper, and whatever dubbed into English Japanese cartoons were going. Mothra was my favorite for some screwey reason; I absolutely hated real moths of any sort... maybe the Peanut Sisters helped me cope? Did I ever love the Pacific Rim movie and the Jaegers!

This one is a favorite, simply because I own it (and I got it at an estate sale for $4 a couple years back)... he hangs out with Biotron, the only other giant robot in the house (though Biotron is nowhere near his actual stature). -M

For the Record ... before I saw Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla in 1974 with my brothers ... Gigantor was my favorite Robot of all time and I have a tremendous respect for that cartoon. I just wanted to share that and that music and the way they put it altogether and having a young responsible boy controlling that Giant Robot showed class, dignity, and the manner that it's totally cool to me as a kid when I saw it and I just watched some cartoons off of YouTube and this cartoon brings back my childhood like it was yesterday.

Oh man that brings back memories. I've got to start going to estate sales! I mostly had the 3-3/4" tall die cast metal Shogun Warriors, but I did have a couple of the large plastic ones like the one above. My mom still has a picture of me with one on Christmas day. Also, I had lots of Micronauts (and re-bought some a few years back) but never had Biotron.
