Thats the way I picture you, Slam. A two-fisted crusader for justice, who, if he was a smoker, would be the unfiltered kind. The bag of potatoes throws me off somewhat When I smoked it was unfiltered. Now it's just the occasional cigar. The tators started out for one of the CBR Avatar contests. I suspect that the theme was something that represents your home. And it kind of stuck.

Also, I only use unsweetened almond milk and Stevia. I drank soymilk for close to 20 years, probably, with occasional detours into almond or rice, but of late I've stuck to almond. Took a little getting used to (which doesn't make a lot of sense, since just how prominent could the flavor be when mixed with coffee & caramel syrup ... must've been mostly if not entirely psychological on my part), but now I quite like it. The couple of times I've had Stevia, I've not liked the aftertaste. Not that saccharine (Sweet'n'Low, in this case) is by any means ideal in any number of ways, but I guess it's what I'm used to. I took to almond milk easily. I started with soy, but settled on almond milk as the healthiest alternative to milk. I can't stand the taste of milk as a consequence of going "full almond." I didn't like the aftertaste of Stevia at first either, but I knew that if I soldiered on I'd get used to it. It's the only sweetener that's considered to be "healthy" so I had to make it work. Now I love it. I used to only use Splenda, but after reading up on the dangers of artificial sweeteners, I had to make the change.

There's a stark reality to drinking black coffee. I drink about 2 cups a day that way. It's like truth serum.

I can't do it. It's like tequila or scotch, if you mix enough with it, you can't taste it and it's as good as a liquor that does taste good. I'm drinking Folgers right now, with sugar.
One thing about coffee, I can't fathom is milk or creamer. Ick. I've tasted it and just ... yuck. My mother drank her coffee black and my father with milk/liquid creamer.

My coffee setup is like this: Nescafe Clasico + water + dash of sugar + dash of International Delight creamer (this week it's Cold Stone Sweet Cream). Mug of choice:

I can't stand the taste of milk as a consequence of going "full almond." The same thing happened to my wife. She can't stand cow's milk while I find Horizon's 1% Organic Milk to be among the sweetest nectars available in the mortal realm and one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon mankind. Both honey and agave nectar are also supposed to be "healthy" sweeteners. They are at least have a lessened glycemic hit compared to regular sugars and they don't have the nasty chemicals of artificials. Honey is also supposed to help fight germs, too, though I don't know how accurate that is nor how much you would need to consume to get the effect. I can't do it. It's like ...scotch, if you mix enough with it, you can't taste it I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that. There are so many different varieties of scotch that unless you just hate the taste of liquor at all you can likely find one to enjoy. My personal favorite of those I've tried is Oban 14 - a nice single malt that is dry good for the money. The only way to drink it is neat. Err, I digress.. do we need a whiskey thread so as not to derail? Ah, well there's your problem.

Had some nice hazelnut coffee yesterday morning, as I only drink it on the weekends when I can get good stuff; the "coffee" they have here at work is closer to paint remover than actual coffee.
This is probably my favorite time of year for coffee, as most places have their pumpkin spice blends out, which is a favorite of my wife and mine. Sadly, she's given up coffee recently, so I drink alone now.

I tired huh, I think it was Cutty Shark scotch when I took my father in law to a casino when I lived in St.Louis. He bought me a glass of it on ice, and I took it down in between chasing it with beer. I haven't tried any scotch since then. I just assumed it would be like my researching tequila, no matter what the price of the bottle is, it tastes horrible. Not that I partake of liquor much anymore (beer and wine now, after an epiphany many years ago) but when I did, Old Crow bourbon was a favorite. There was never a wrong time for vodka or gin either. And one of my favorite mixes, Seagrams 7 and Mt Dew. As far as coffee, I don't really LIKE coffee, of all the types/brands I've tried. I drink it mostly cause it's free in every work place and I get a something hot in the winter with caffeine. If any place I worked had fountain soda for free like coffee, I'd drink more soda than I do now.

Or you're a Philistine. Good scotch should be drunk with nothing more than possibly a single drop of water to help open the bouquet. Bad scotch should be banished from the face of the Earth. Or you can use it to make a Rob Roy in a pinch.

Or you're a Philistine. Good scotch should be drunk with nothing more than possibly a single drop of water to help open the bouquet. Bad scotch should be banished from the face of the Earth. Or you can use it to make a Rob Roy in a pinch. The only time you should add anything to scotch is if you are drinking cask strength, then it is pretty much required to cut with water. I've only had cask strength twice, both with my thesis adviser in grad school, once when he got tenure and once when I finished my thesis. He had brought it back with him when he did a semester in Glasgow while completing his doctorate. Nectar of the gods it is. Cutty Sark is to scotch what Piels or Natty lite is to beer. Cheap barely digestible junk that shouldn't be given out for human consumption. Blended scotches are pretty much right out for me as well. Single malt all the way, preferable nicely aged. -M

I never drank it, of course, but every now & then I was charged with making instant coffee (usually using, I think, they were called, Folger's Flavor Crystals or Sanka or something ... freeze-dried, I believe) for the great-aunt I stayed with a good deal of the time during my pre-teen years. (We lived only a block away for the last 5 or so years of her life, & she was infirm.) In any event, she used Coffee Mate, & I learned to love that stuff; ate it by the spoonful. Not sure what it consisted of, but malt might've been involved.

There was definitely a barrier to overcome getting into coffee that took me a long time to get past. I started with cheap, crappy coffee loaded with sweeteners and creamers of various types as a study aid in college. Folger's with ice cream was an early combination. The more time I spent with it, the more I learned about quality of ingredients, equipment, and technique and how big a difference they could make. While I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur by any means, I do now at least occasionally approach somewhat competent regarding good coffee. While I started for the caffeine, I have to say it's nice being able to enjoy it instead of disguising it with sugar and choking it down.
As for scotch, single malt all the way though the occasional blend of decent mixes can be okay. While the Johnny Walker line is typically overpriced and overrated, I will admit that Johnny Black is passable for the money though nowhere near the quality of a well-aged single malt. While single malts can get quite expensive, you can get some fantastic bottles for under $100.
