I espoused my love for the Takara Diaclone relaunch series here last year when I obtained and reviewed Big Powered, but I felt the need to create a more general thread for discussing the series because I am utterly in love with it and hope someone else out there is equally into the series and would enjoy discussing it. Background:Diaclone was the Japanese robot series that eventually launched a series of transforming robot vehicles that were brought to the United States as THE TRANSFORMERS. Yes, those Transformers. Optimus Prime and (most of) the gang were originally from the Diaclone series (a few came from Takara Microman, and a few came from other non-Takara toy lines). For years, collectors took a vested interest in obtaining the original Diaclone versions of their favorite Transformers, but others (including yours truly) took note in the earlier Diaclone toys that were both exceptionally different and tremendously creative. A few years back, Takara decided to take a new approach to the classic series, using the original toys more as a guiding inspiration than anything else. Like the originals, the series is based on the concept of a 1/80 scale universe, complete with people with magnetic boots who populate the vehicles and bases that combine to form awesome robots. Unlike the original series, there is an emphasis on interchangeability, creating near infinite combination possibilities both for vehicle and robot modes. And, while the price tags for these toys have been relatively prohibitive (I bought Diabattles for $160, and got Big Powered, priced at $270, as a house-warming gift from my mother), third party company Mech Toys has since been reproducing some of these toys faithfully at a fraction of the price as a series entitled Lost Planet. More recently, Mech Toys has begun putting their own creative spins on the original moulds and even releasing some designs of their own which are damn impressive. As of now, I have Diabattles ($160), Big Powered ($270), a Lost Planet white variant of Diabattles with some really cool tweaks to the mould ($60), and the Lost Planet original design of Omega Supreme ($50) which is DAMN impressive and came with several really cool bonus pieces. Together, they have conquered my desk as I continue to find amazing new combinations/modes for it all: (note: the robots in this picture did not come with the set. Some are original Diaclone pilots, and some I obtained elsewhere)In robot mode, they look like this: Man, I love this series! And I'm going to go utterly broke collecting it.

That is one mighty expensive hobby you have there shaxper. Can I ask who does the dusting? I used to have some of the early imported Transforming robots (may have been Diaclone?) back in the 80's and all I know is that boy did they attract the dust! Combination of dusting and air canister was about the only way for keeping them clean in any way. almost need a sealed room for your beauties! Or is your home really a Diaclone?

I'm not sure they attract dust any more than the other items I collect, but I do own a power duster that I use on occasion when I find myself sneezing after taking an item down from the shelf. $35 on ebay

Well, Diaclone has become a run-away success since I first started this thread three years back. Most releases sell out almost immediately and end up being sold second-hand for more than twice of their original (hefty) price tags. But if you've thought about getting into the series and decided you were too late, Takara just dropped its first image of what is destined to be the hottest item from this toy line. Way back in the original Diaclone series, the most sought after toy from the line was Great Robot Base, an 18" Robot fortress with a ton of amazing bells and whistles. Diaclone fans like me have been hoping for five years now to see a new Great Robot Base. Well, Takara isn't releasing the entire thing at once. Instead, it's a two-piece combiner, and we have images of the lower half: From what I'm reading, the combined robot mode will be around twice as big as the original, which is total madness. I'm beyond thrilled and will likely shell out whatever the hell they ask for this thing (folks are estimating around $800 for each half!).

Well, here we are. DA-100, the second half of the Diaclone Relaunch's "Grand Dion", or, as we classic Diaclone fans know it, Great Robot Base. The original Great Robot Base was a holy grail to vintage Diaclone collectors, and I was lucky to own two at various points, which I got at criminally low prices because I was an awesome hunter AND I was lucky. From the onset of the Diaclone relaunch, this was the guy everyone was waiting for and willing to pay pretty much any price to see. The first half was released in 2023 at the staggering price of $475, this second half was recently released at a price of $499.99, and there were various optional upgrades (one of which I purchased at $49.99 in order to make the lower half function more like an aircraft carrier). In total, this thing ran me over a thousand dollars, which is far FAR more than I have ever spent on a toy, comic, or collectible prior to this moment (the closest runner up was $600 for the original vintage Great Robot Base, which is worth three times that). So I'm a little nervous to open it and get started. Will it be worth it? Will this thing live up to dreams I've been formulating since this line was first announced in 2015? For now, here's the box... When completed, the whole thing comes to 25" tall, making it ever so slightly taller than every existing Transformer other than the Haslab Unicron (27"), as well as far far more detailed and containing oh so many features. If you want to see more, here's this: Now I just need to work up the courage to open the damn thing!

That is absolutely killer.
You know it's worth every penny. Tear it open and pretend it was given to you as a holiday or birthday gift as a kid when you didn't even have to think about what something cost and enjoy the fool out of it. Huge congrats, that's a special one, got a feeling you're going to have a lot of hours of fun with it.

Well, with @kal's advice, I have moved forward. One hour later, this is how far I've gotten and, man, I am NOT disappointed. I'm no professional toy photographer, but I was too excited not to share... Yes, that elevator in the back actually works, too!
