Just out of curiosity, why are they so expensive? Are these aftermarket prices?

Just out of curiosity, why are they so expensive? Are these aftermarket prices? No. These were pre-order prices. There are a few reasons: 1. These things are INTRICATE. Every inch is lovingly, carefully considered. Lots of extra features and details you'd never find on a Transformer. This guy may only be two inches taller than the Titans Return Fort Max, but it's about 20 times more quality in terms of extra features and minute details. 2. It's catered to a niche market. They are selling to a small but passionate base, so they have to make up for the design costs and make it profitable for Takara Tomy, even when shipping out a comparitively very small quantity of product. 3. Overseas shipping. These things are MASSIVE. 4. Exchange rates. American distributors set their prices so that they will come out ahead regardless of fluctuations in dollar to yen. Keep in mind these preorders are placed almost a year in advance, and a lot can happen in the market over the course of that time. Many collectors buy directly from Japan in order to offset some of this, but I'd rather have the protections that come with dealing with a US company. 5. People will pay it. Really, these two parts run for about the same amount as two major Haslab releases. I've never yet dropped money on those (too expensive for what you get), but I see the value in this.

A lot of the fun and madness of the Diaclone relaunch is that there aren't exact modes. You have a lot of freedom to play with the final look/composition of the vehicle modes. I think this is my preferred look for the air vehicle mode:

I'm sorry to still be posting pics, but this may well be the most amazing toy I've ever played with in my life, and I just need to share some of that joy here. I mentioned the ability to tweak/customize modes before. Well here are two different takes on robot mode. 1. My preferred standard mode: 2. and an armored mode: A few fun features I can't get enough of... 1. Lets launch a giant ship out of the chest! Wings and such fold out after its out: 2. Extra shuttle bay for launching or receiving more Diaclone toys: 3. I LOVE how the missles spray plastic exhaust out of the back when extended forward. And yes, they can detach. Until now, the greatest toy I'd ever played with was the original Diaclone Fortress X (a toy I sold decades ago to make rent that is now far out of my price range), but I'm starting to think this new Great Robot Base has it beat! I cannot believe this thing. Truly cannot believe it.

Does it do the original stuff? The prices on these ads are amusing.

This is a re-imagining of the very first Diaclone toy, which long preceeded the ones in the commercial. It does a lot of what that original toy did, but not all of it. The original could rotate the Command center, launch a spring-loaded missile from its stomach, and had a working crank escalator. This guy has a ton of new features (for example, the original could not split into two vehicles) but does not retain those specific features.

What I really meant is there that hand grind conveyer belt thing for the humans? Unfortunately no. Probably the only feature I'm disappointed not to see carried forward to this version. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually sell one as an upgrade. It does contain a working elevator, though.

What I really meant is there that hand grind conveyer belt thing for the humans? You know, I have no idea why I answered "no" to this the other day. It is in the new version, only so different that I didn't recognize it. It's now a single platform that that can move up the shaft via wind-up motor.
