When you buy more comics than you need, is that hoarding? Well like anything, I think the question with hoarding is what is the reason behind the purchase? And how attached is the person to the items. Do they feel unable to throw away anything? Because then yes that would tick a lot of boxes for the definition of a hoarder. But like any illness, a person needs to exhibit several signs, and for a certain period. Much in the same way of any other illness.

The question originally was simple but as the thread progressed, the topic did come to question what is hoarding, and people chimed in with their own individual thoughts. But its also interesting, because you say my opinion comes off as sweeping, ill-informed, and somewhat offensive. And yet I have not made any comment in regards to any member here. No. If you had, that would have been a violation of our community rules, which would have been a whole different matter. But when you judge an entire group of people in a highly unflattering light with no evidence to support it, that meets the criteria of being sweeping and offensive. Not a violation of any rules here and, thus, not necessarily wrong (though prejudice works in a disturbingly similar way), but certainly neither kind nor accurate. And, if we do have a member of the forum who is a self-identified hoarder, and that person takes offence to your comments, you'll have some explaining to do to him/her as well. Hope you see the difference. |

I go to a Comic Book Store that allows everyone to rent a book for a certain price before buying it. Because of my age - I rarely buy books and because of that I want to decrease the number of books and keep the books that I really want. So, therefore I feel that Collecting Books is an investment to be made and having said that it's not hoarding at all. But, to buy books for the sake of it - it's hoarding and that's not a good thing at all.

I go to a Comic Book Store that allows everyone to rent a book for a certain price before buying it. Because of my age - I rarely buy books and because of that I want to decrease the number of books and keep the books that I really want. So, therefore I feel that Collecting Books is an investment to be made and having said that it's not hoarding at all. But, to buy books for the sake of it - it's hoarding and that's not a good thing at all. How does that work? Do they keep a credit card on file and charge it if you never return the book? Do they let you rent both new comics and back issues? That's definitely an interesting way of doing business. |

Never heard of such a thing. Back in the early '80s, at least, certain places were known to rent vinyl records (catering, obviously, to home tapers), but that's hardly the same thing.

They charge a quarter for every book that they rent - and if you like the book and want to buy it - they will deduct that from the cost of the book no questions asked. They operate by using your credit card - but because it's a quarter - they put you on a honor system of which they ring up a "tab" on you and once you reach a $10.00 minimum they charge it to your credit card automatically and let you know in advance that they will be charging to your credit card. Because of my age, I'm 55 years old and a preferred customer and I have the rights to rent 3 books for a quarter and having said that - I bring along a dollar worth of quarters to the store and I rent 3 to 6 books at a time. Now, if I want to buy a book - and I do occasionally - I get a 30 percent off of all Comic Books and that's translate a $2.99 book down to $2.00. They even pay the Sales Tax as well. That's one of many privileges of being a Senior Citizen going to a Store. I have been doing this since 2007 when my dear friend Jeff decided to do both rent and own Comics. His business is doing great! |

Collecting can definitely turn into hoarding, especially if you never had a game plan going into. It does tend to over take people's lives and homes and get out of control. And sometimes the hoarding aspect is more rooted in a deeper connection/emotion one has had from past issues. Collecting is something that your items are in a certain location for the most part and you're proud to be able to display those items.

And sometimes the hoarding aspect is more rooted in a deeper connection/emotion one has had from past issues. Collecting is something that your items are in a certain location for the most part and you're proud to be able to display those items. My thoughts exactly. I've been collecting action figures and comics since I was 9 (11 years), and it's gotten to a point to where I just don't have the room anymore, so I have been selling off and giving away a lot of my collection, mostly for space reasons. |

Let's see...Edgar Church owned every Golden Age book ever printed, all 18,000-22,000 or so of them, was he a hoarder who had mental issues and lived in a pigsty according to the very windy theory of someone who has already given me a headache?

I neither collect nor hoard. I buy to read, or eventually get around to reading, and keep to reread. I have 150 long boxes worth of comics, but it's all just reading material. Wow, you have 45 thousand comics? I believe the actual number is less then 40K still, though they're currently in storage and have been on and off for years now, so I've sort of lost count. My best guesstimate puts them just under 40,000. |
