Since I'm in the mood and I'll have to limit my choices in the Halloween game in the other sub forum to comics ten years and older, and I think there's a decent amount of modern horror comics worth discussion, I figured I'd start a thread.
Just read The Wake, thought it started off AWESOME. Halfway through I thought "Ehh, still good, just not where I thought this was going." By the end I thought "There goes any chance of a movie." But still, horror mermaids, you don't read that every day.
Cannot wait for the Sabrina title coming out from Archie, and loving Afterlife. I just checked to see when the next issue is due and I see they're coming out with a magazine sized edition of the comic. I may double dip for that, I love the large format of Life With Archie.
I see American Vampire is coming back for a new story, looking forward to that too.
Anyone else reading cool modern horror comics?

For the most part I enjoyed The Wake but I found the last issue to be pretty underwhelming.
Afterlife with Archie has been phenomenal and I can't wait for Sabrina #1! (Never thought I'd say that about a Sabrina book.)
George Romero's Empire of the Dead has been pretty solid and it ties in nicely to the original Night of the Living Dead plus it adds a new twist to the mythology.
The Bernie Wrightson artwork in Frankenstein Alive, Alive! has been incredible.

I was hesitant to try the new Romero comic because I've read a few from Avatar and had been completely let down. This new series is Marvel right? The most recent Marvel comic I read was Dexter and it was also a let down, I didn't finish it. I didn't know Wrightson was doing a Frankenstein comic, I will definitely have to check that out. I love his art, have seen relatively little of it.

I'm a bit behind on Locke and Key, but I've liked the first 3 trades so far. I hope that he doesn't have his father's problem with writing endings though. I think that's the only American comic I'd classify as horror that I'm currently reading.
On the European side, I've bought some comics relatively cheap including Halloween by Callede and Denys (no relation to the movies), which I found rather disappointing.

I agree with the sentiments above concerning the Wake, the concept was awesome and the beginning was great but the ending was rather "meh"
I love the Baltimore comics from Darkhorse, probably my favorite vampire book ever.
Abe Sapien: The Devil Does not Jest is a great haunted house story.
But for my money my favorite modern horror book was Breath of Bones: a Tale of the Golem, the black and white art is beyond beautiful and the story had a very real human feel to it.

I gave up on the Wake after 2 issues, Snyder was juggling a lot of balls, so I looked at how many issues it was supposed to be and his terrible track record with endings both in his comics work and prose work and decided it was just going to be another disappointing read when all was said and done and saved my money. However, I will recommend Severed co-written by Snyder as a very good modern horror comic. It is perhaps the only thing he has written that I have felt had any kind of satisfactory ending.
I will second Locke and Key. I powered through all of the volumes earlier this year and couldn't put it down. There was a little lull in one of the middle volumes, but overall a great read form beginning to end.
I thought Empire of the Dead was kind of meh. It had a great first issue but kind of fell off the tracks with the second issue and I don't think I ended up reading past the third issue.
I will echo recommendations for Afterlife with Archie and Frankenstein Alive, alive a swell, and I too am eagerly awaiting the Sabrina comic.
The two Dream Thief minis from Dark Horse (Dream Thief from last year and Dream Thief: No Escape currently being published) are part horror/part crime books, so I will throw them out there. The central idea is an aboriginal dream mask that allows the ghosts of the murdered dead to possess the bearer and achieve vengeance. However, there is more than meets the eye going on. Greg Smallwood (who took over Moon Knight's art post-Warren Ellis) draws the series and it is gorgeous.
Brubaker's Fatale also has a strong Lovecraftian hoirror element in a fusion of horror and noir that was a great read as well.
I've also enjoyed the first three issues of Kirkman and Azacea's Outcast, and this is from someone who is not a Kirkman fan at all, and found the first Walking Dead omnibus a bit of a tedious plodding read and couldn't bring myself to even start the second.

Revival has been solid and the premise is pretty interesting. The Jenny Frison cover artwork is gorgeous and Mike Norton does a good job with the interior artwork.

I like Ferals by David Lapham and Gabriel Andrade. I'm a fan of werewolves and this is just so freaking brutal. Lapham's a solid writer and goes all out on this comic. Not for the faint of heart...the violence is gruesome.

I don't know if Dead Boy Detectives would be considered traditional horror but it certainly contains a lot of horror elements. The new Vertigo series is pretty good.

One of the few current comics I continue to read is Terry Moore's Rachel Rising. I couldn't praise it enough if I tried. Resurrected witches from the Salem burnings, a little girl who enjoys gutting people, the Devil himself posing as a preacher. Strong characterization is Moore's specialty as well as his art

I got my Sabrina but not Wytches. Some flipper came in and bought every copy they had. Also managed to buy the last three issues of Walking Dead, I hadn't been keeping up with much lately. I think I'm on the verge of full time trade waiting.
