I've been trying to expand my comic tastes lately and wade into the more "adult" stuff out there. I know the classic Vampirella stuff from the Warren days had some pretty great creative teams on it, but I'm not sure where to start. Are there any runs you guys recommend?

Of what I have of Vampirella, the Vamirella Crimson Chronicles Maximum collects Vampirella Magazine #1-37. I enjoyed it a lot. Mostly Archie Goodwin stories in it. And some Steve Englehart too, if I remember correctly. A little bit of Sutton art, but most was by Gonzales art. And one other artists, whose name escapes me. Good stories though.
Vampirella & the Blood Red Queen of Hearts is another good classic collection. But I think that's in Crimson collection. I'd have to check when I get home.
There's also Vampirella vs The Cult of Chaos and Vampirella Retro #1-3, which are collections of the original series. I will check and see if any of these cross issue with what is in the Crimson TPB.
As far as new Vampirella, the second series, simply title "Vampirella" from 2001 was a good series overall. Though it was stronger to start with. And only around 25 I believe. It featured Mike Mayhew art and was written by Mark Miller to start. The stories started out a lot like the old Vampirella stories, with more creepy and gothic type stories but unfortunately it didn't last that long. I wanna say the first dozen issues were all solid in story and art. After that the writers and artists rotated so much that it was hard to pin down any kind of quality writing. At that point it was on my monthly pull list and I was getting it for the variant covers more that the contents.
I'd like to read the Vampirella Monthly too. It's by Morrison and Miller. And really for that reason, but more so as I hear it is the best of modern day Vampirella. Which needed a lot of help in the 90's when Harris made Vampirella their flagship bad girl and she more there for T&A than good stories.
In the end, I like all the stories from the original Vampirella series in those collections. Some really great story telling. I'd like to see it all get collected. I'd actually jump into spending money on comics again if I could get the rest of the original series reprinted.

A lot of the modern Dynamite books are dire, but I have to admit to really liking the current volume by Paul Cornell and Jimmy Broxton, #5 was released this week I think. Classic you cant go past anything drawn by Jose Gonzales

Vampirella initially appeared in Warren Publishing's black-and-white horror-comics magazine Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969), running to issue #112 (March 1983). This run is an initial and original run by this character and I read about 30-40% of these stories back then mostly in the 70's when it was popular Pharozonk, and having said that - I've felt that Harris Publications didn't do much of her and I felt it was done in most part an average job with this character. I'm not an expert on this character but has a good and general idea what this character is all about. I prefer the original concept and the concept done by Dynamite Entertainment is okay but not as good as the character done by Warren Publishing. This all I know.

^ tho seriously, Vampi isn't that hard to get into. . . the Harris comics are likely the easiest for you to find, and for the most part, are good reads.

I bought Vampirella #1(Warren b&w) off the rack back in the day. Originally, she was just a cool, sexy alternative host of the mag like they had in Creepy and Eerie. Even as a kid, although beautifully drawn, I found her solo exploits to be a colossal bore. To this day, I couldn't tell you her origin!

Yeah, this is my feeling on Vampirella too: she looks great, but as a character is a real bore. I picked up some reprints of earlier stories in the mid-90s and, although the art was great, they were really hard work to get through.
