Outside of a few Spider-Man titles I really haven't read much of the Ultimate Universe. I'm wondering what comics people enjoyed and would recommend? My first introduction to the Ultimate Universe was the Spider-Men miniseries which not only had me interested in Miles Morales comics but got me to read Spider-Man comics regularly for the first time since I dropped them all together in the mid to late 90s. Since then I've read all of Miles stories but also went back and read the first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man which I thought for the most part was interesting. I've also read a few issues of Ultimate Avengers featuring the Red Skull story arc but not much else. I've heard good things about Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk and plan to check that out when I have the chance.

Outside of a few Spider-Man titles I really haven't read much of the Ultimate Universe. I'm wondering what comics people enjoyed and would recommend? Ultimates and Ultimates 2 were excellent series. In fact, when I read them (when the collected editions came out) they were arguably my favourite Marvel comics of their day. They read exactly like what a good Avengers movie could have been before there was an Avengers movie. The Ultimates are not our Avengers; they are clearly simplified, with a less convoluted backstory, and there is as much of Hollywood in those two volumes as there is Lee and Kirby. Nevertheless, they hit all the right notes for an action-SF film, and incorporate a lot of interesting storytelling elements. For example, Tony Stark has a brain tumour; that's what prompted him to suddenly risk his life in a metal suit and try to do good. Since this is not the Marvel Universe, since for all we know the Ultimate books were supposed to be all cancelled after five years, there's a tension there that we wouldn't have with the regular Tony Stark... This one might actually die of cancer in short order. The same goes for Thor. According to him, he's the Norse god of thunder. According to his brother, he's a delusional male nurse from Norway who got his hand on secret technology (the hammer) and is comforted in his madness by the power he gained. All along the series, we are given evidence that might go both ways: is this guy really Thor and is his brother the trickster Loki? Or is he a mental patient with a big hammer and his brother is genuinely concerned? The ambiguity was one of my favourite points about the series (and I won't reveal how it is concluded!) Yeah, Hank Pym is cast as a wife-beater... but even if that seems extremely facile, the subject is actually expanded in a serious fashion. Highly recommended!!!

Liked both volumes of Ultimates as well as Hulk vs Wolverine as above. Also liked the Ultimate Comics Avengers stuff too(some awkward name to differentiate from the earlier Ultimates books). UFF was ok, especially if you like the Marvel Zombies books,or Pasqual Ferry. Spidey ok,parallels Marvel 616 too much for me(similar encounters with a spin), but I never cared for the X book.

I really liked Millar's Ultimate X-Men run. I thought it was a fun take on the characters.

I really liked Millar's Ultimate X-Men run. I thought it was a fun take on the characters. RR already hit upon why I loved the first two arcs of the Ultimates so I'll go with X-Men; the character work is truly great and the focus on their interpersonal relationships interspersed with action is balanced really well and it only got better as it went. Ultimate FF was really the only book I never cared for.

I like that the characters were similar enough to their mainstream Marvel Universe counterparts to provide a sense of familiarity, but different enough to keep them interesting. They gave us something that felt like a genuine new take, rather than rely on typical interpretations and rehashed storylines.

Ultimate War is a great example of a superheroes vs. superheroes story done right.

I forgot to mention I also read the Ultimates Thor Reborn story arc and Ultimate Hulk Annual #1 as well as the Hunger and Cataclysm mini series. It seems like the Ultimatum event might be essential reading to know what happens as there seems to be a big status quo change in the New Ultimates title. I also noticed there are some Ultimate characters popping up post-Secret Wars. Ultimate Reed Richards now known as The Maker is appearing in Ultimates 2 which has been an interesting read. Versions of the Ultimate Avengers appeared in the most recent issue as well. Also James Hudson Jr (who I'm largely unfamiliar with) is appearing in X-Men Blue series.

All I know is that Jimmy Hudson Jr is the son of Ultimate Wolverine, a father he never met. Also, Ultimate Thor's hammer has appeared in the main MU. Thor Odinson believed that he may wield it but the hammer picked a very surprising choice instead.
It's been awhile but I've read a large majority of the Ultimate Spidey title through my local library. Probably my favorite work by Bendis and he & Mark Bagley set a recent modern record by collaborating on, I think, over 100 issues together on it?
Heartily agree with Ultimates and Ultimates 2. A wonderful re-thinking of Avengers lore. My only caveat is it introduces the notion of Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury...which helped lead to Jackson playing Fury in the films...which lead to Marvel introducing Nick Fury Jr whose black and one-eyed. *sigh*

Did anyone read Spider-Men II #1 which recently came out? Does it occur in the old Ultimate Universe? The solicit only says it answers “Who is Miles Morales’ counterpart in the Marvel 616 universe?” which seems irrelevant now that he's part of the main universe post-Secret Wars.

No it takes place in 616 so far. All I will say so to not spoil a pretty new issue for people is that no it does not seem to be irrelevant.
