It's the fifth Wednesday of the month and I thought I would just be stopping by the comic shop to browse because my regular comics seldom come out on the fifth Wednesday. (Normally I would skip it entirely, but I'm running errands today and will drive right by it.)
But today is an exception! A bunch of my comics are arriving today!
DK III #8, Kamandi Challenge #3, Comic Book History of Comics #5, Avengers 5.1 and Black Widow #12 are all regular books for me.
And I'll probably get the Batgirl Annual unless I flip through it and the art is really bad.

Yeah, there aren't usually a lot of great comics on these weeks and even this week the pickings are slim but there are some surprisingly some good reads this week.

What's Jughead the Hunger supposed to be about anyway?

I added Weird Love #17 to the pile because I haven't picked up one of these weird reprint comics for a while.
And I almost bought Green Lantern/Space Ghost, but I already had so many comics that I decided to leave it for next week.
And I did get the Batgirl Annual #1. I haven't read it yet. The art looked OK.

Written by Tom DeFalco. Art and Cover by Sandy Jarrell. Reggie continues his plan to pit Moose against Archie. He stole Archie's phone & has been sending texts to Midge. Reggie arranges for Moose to see Midge with Archie. However the whole plan backfires on Reggie because Moose only wants Midge to be happy. The whole misdirection Reggie caused doesn't work. And something bad happens on the last page... Another solid issue. DeFalco wrote all the characters well. We also see some flashbacks with the Little Archie gang! I hate that the next issue is the last in this mini series. 8/10.

What's Jughead the Hunger supposed to be about anyway? In the same style as Afterlife with Archie except this time Jughead is a werewolf.

Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Minkyu Jung. Cover by Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund. Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman & Aquaman are in a bunker with Wally Flash, Nightwing, Tempest & Donna. The Key is behind this...but he is working for an unseen figure. He forces them into situations to cause a mental breakdown to capture their mental energy. Donna is the first to break down when Diana reveals Donna's origin. This sends out a telepathic scream to Omen & the rest of the JLA & Titans rescue them. The reason why the Key did this is partially revealed on the last page. Abnett again nails the friendship between the Titans in contrast to the Justice League just being allies on a team. The downside he makes the JLA members too arrogant. 7/10.

I wanted to get the DC/HB crossovers. However they were all sold out except there was one copy left of: Script by Mark Russell. Art by Rick Leonardi and Scott Hanna. Cover by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund. Booster is on a date in the 25th century. Aliens attack Gotham. Booster finds out these aliens visited earth in 20,000 BC. So he takes a time sphere back to that time. There he meets Fred & Barney & attempts to prevent the aliens from attacking Gotham in the 25th century. Of course his plans do not go smoothly. But everything turns out OK in the end. The backup story was The Jetsons. Wriiten by Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti. Art by Pier Brito. George's Mother is 124 yrs old. She decides to use a new technology to have her mind transferred before her body dies. The Jetsons arrive at the facility too late. George's Mom has ended her life...but she is now Rosie! Booster Gold & the Flintstones was a light hearted story but still fun. The Jetsons story was a bit more serious & will be continued in an upcoming Jetsons title. I really wanted to read the Green Lantern/Space Ghost issue...oh well. I probably will find it someday. 7/10.

Not everyone reads Archie afterlife or whatever.
Jughead the hunger to me sounds like a tapeworm situation for all I care

Star Lord #5: Very fast paced issue with lots of stuff happening. Peter teams up with his elderly charge to steal a bunch of jewels for the Black Cat who is holding the older man's son hostage. This all ties in to the underground bar Black Cat runs. The story moves fast with plenty of clever quips. There is fight scene with Javelynn (an older lady thief) and a bunch of C list Marvel villains in the bar that is well drawn and very well orchestrated. The art on this book is stunning. It has a very animated (not childish looking) feel. Daredevil and old man Logan show up and it doesn't feel forced. Hopefully Peter is learning more about the human side of his heritage in this adventure. If you are are looking for a consistently good, well written, and well drawn book I highly recommend Star Lord. 9/10

Reggie and Me #4: Reggie's scheme backfires in this issue. He crafted a very devious plan, however it all falls apart with consequences he didn't anticipate. Very nice to see obscure Archie characters like Little Ambrose and Ginger in this issue--and more scenes from Reggie's childhood. The scene with his father--I am beginning to understand that Reggie must hurt others before they hurt him. Things moved pretty fast in this issue and that last page made me gasp! 8/10

Not everyone reads Archie afterlife or whatever. Jughead the hunger to me sounds like a tapeworm situation for all I care That's the true beauty of Archie these days; they have a little of something for everyone. If you're an Archie purist who wants the traditional house art style and traditional feel to the stories there are the big digests, if you want a modern take on the characters by some of the big names of comics there's a steady line of monthly books to read and for those like me that aren't the biggest Archie fans but love horror books there is the Aftelife line...which is just amazing in my eyes, despite it's slow production schedule. This one shot is a bit different though in that it isn't connected to the other horror books as here Jug is a werewolf instead of the king of the zombies, but it still looks great.
