Thanks for the thoughts, folks. Mostly this is going to be a good thing. It is just a bit bittersweet to see something that my former boss and I spent 19 years building begin to fall apart almost overnight. The new "boss," who hasn't even taken over yet, is already making incredibly dumb decisions. You'd think that if you were coming in to an established office you wouldn't promote people without talking to the guy who supervised them, but you'd think wrong. He made a secretary the "office manager" who I was very very close to demoting, if not firing outright. So, yeah. I get to just sit and watch it fall apart from the outside instead of getting to actively participate in it.
I've seen that sort of thing happen time and time again.
Usually, seeing The Peter Principle in real-time action can be as frustrating from the outside as it is from the inside.

So, I took my cat Derek (the Cleric) to the vet today, concerned about his behavior with some of his cat treats, his fur getting all matted, and just weight loss, over time. He got a pretty clean bill of health, which puts me at ease. I give him cat treats, when I get home from work and he usually gobbled them up; but, he had been spitting some of the nuggets back out the side of his mouth, with a little shake. His hair is all mated on his hind quarters and he has gotten kind of skinny. He's 16, so the combination of things had me concerned enough to make an appointment. The vet said his teeth look great and he didn't see any masses or ulcers in his mouth and his general health seemed good. he had plenty of energy to squirm around; so, it seems I was a bit paranoid. He hasn't been vomiting or showing signs of internal issues, so we are just going to keep an eye on him. $55 bought more than a little piece of mind. We adopted Derek about 8 years ago, with another cat, who we called Punky (for pumpkin, as he was a beige and orange tabby). Derek kind of bullied him, at first (Punky was still an older kitten, at around 10 months old); but, once he established dominance, he seemed to chill out and they would romp and play and wrestle on the bed. Sadly, when we moved, the bottom popped loose from the crappy Walmart pet taxi and they got loose. Derek stayed close by and was easily corralled; but, Punky got spooked and bolted away. I spent two days trying to find him, with no luck. We had to console ourselves with the idea that someone found him and took him in. We alerted the animal control people and he was chipped, but we never received any notices. Two years ago, we adopted Aja, as a tiny kitten, with an oversized personality and she acts as Cato, to Derek's Inspector Clouseau, pouncing on him and grabbing ahold of him, when he least expects it. He tolerates it up to a point, and then you hear him hiss and thump her. She's right back at it a minute later. So, my day got a lot brighter and my little buddy should be around for a while longer.
We have a sign in our house that reads:
"Saving one cat will not change the World. But for that one cat, the World will change forever."
I'm a big believer in adoptions and rescues.
and cats.
Edit-- I just realized that my accompanying picture had a broken link and didn't upload correctly... fixed now.
Don't go to Ohio .

To the fellow New Englanders, I just came back from the Big E! Always some fun comic book themed things to find there! It's mostly shirts and wall art, but its always cool to see what I can add to my comic room!

The big E is a show or a comic store ? Big E = Eastern States Exposition. It's like a county/state fair for all of New England held in Massachusetts. I moved out of New England 21 years ago, so I don't know how much it has changed, but it was always the destination for school field trips when I was in elementary and middle school. -M

On another note, not to bash another community but to those still occasionally frequent our old home back at CBR...have you noticed the new layout? I just came back from vacation and their whole lay out has changed...and it's going to take some getting used to.

I just got my eyes examined and prescription updated, and new glasses ordered. It is nice to hear that your vision is actually improving......
.......though I would probably have to live to be 230 years-old for it to ever get back to 20/20.
I'm still very nearsighted; just less than I was with previous prescriptions. Same thing 4 years ago, when I got my current glasses.
It's also nice to know that I have very good vision care insurance, especially compared to what I used to have at Barnes & Noble. $10 co-pay for the exam, and a $400 savings on glasses (frames, poly-carbonite lenses, bi-focals, UV coating, prisming, scratch resistant...). Got my new glasses for about the retail price of the frames!
The optometrist was a young whippersnapper, though. You never want to be older than your doctor, unless you are talking about experimental surgery; and, even then, you want them to have some years of experience under their belt. Makes me feel even older, especially when I am wearing a t-shirt that references something probably before their lifetime (though Tom & Jerry have had modern renderings)

ps I believe the woman who helped me pick out frames and measure my bifocal lens was from South Africa. When she first spoke, in passing, I thought I heard Scottish, but then I caught what sounded like an Australian drawl, on a syllable or two. When she rejoined me, to get things ordered, I could tell by the way she said "Jiffrey," and a couple of other words and phrases that it was South Africa, not Australia or New Zealand. I almost asked; but, I was pretty sure about it and figured she probably gets asked about it, all the time, here in the Midwest. I did smile, every time she said my name. She didn't have the Afrikaaner edge, so I' assuming more of the English-dominated regions

Seven straight days now of buildings having to be evacuated because of bomb threats in the city I live in because of fear mongering untrue statements made by public figures about a segment of our population. Schools closed and now having to be swept every day by state police before kids or employees are let into the building, businesses and medical facilities forced to close for extended periods while they are evacuated as a precaution.
This skirts our ban on politics so I am not going to go into specifics or name names, but this is the reality I am living in currently, essentially living under siege by what amounts to domestic terrorists. If I seem distracted or cranky, or unconcerned about comic matters, this is a large reason why.

Democracy is fragile enough without this garbage. Free speech has always been limited-it does not protect fraud, slander, libel or hate speech or inciting panic. And it only provides that Congress shall not make any law abridging the right of free speech. What needs to happen is someone needs to file a slander suit against those perpetuating these stories and force them to prove what they are saying is true in a court of law. If it is true, then they are perfectly free to say it, if it is not true, it is not a matter of free speech as it does not protect specifically defined untruths that cause harm. -M

Like you, hoping that this comment skirts the politics ban, but I have to say that in this specific case, I hope that either the municipality in question files some kind of suit against the perpetrators (the inciting politicians - who doubled down even after their claims were thoroughly debunked) or the members of the immigrant community in question file a class action suit against them.

Equally absurd that we need to have and enforce a ban on political discussion right now. Political lies hurting innocent people should not be a debatable topic. Hopefully, we can discuss through that filter without drama. I'm so sorry for you and for everyone being hurt by this.
