So, I took my cat Derek (the Cleric) to the vet today, concerned about his behavior with some of his cat treats, his fur getting all matted, and just weight loss, over time. He got a pretty clean bill of health, which puts me at ease. I give him cat treats, when I get home from work and he usually gobbled them up; but, he had been spitting some of the nuggets back out the side of his mouth, with a little shake. His hair is all mated on his hind quarters and he has gotten kind of skinny. He's 16, so the combination of things had me concerned enough to make an appointment. The vet said his teeth look great and he didn't see any masses or ulcers in his mouth and his general health seemed good. he had plenty of energy to squirm around; so, it seems I was a bit paranoid. He hasn't been vomiting or showing signs of internal issues, so we are just going to keep an eye on him. $55 bought more than a little piece of mind. We adopted Derek about 8 years ago, with another cat, who we called Punky (for pumpkin, as he was a beige and orange tabby). Derek kind of bullied him, at first (Punky was still an older kitten, at around 10 months old); but, once he established dominance, he seemed to chill out and they would romp and play and wrestle on the bed. Sadly, when we moved, the bottom popped loose from the crappy Walmart pet taxi and they got loose. Derek stayed close by and was easily corralled; but, Punky got spooked and bolted away. I spent two days trying to find him, with no luck. We had to console ourselves with the idea that someone found him and took him in. We alerted the animal control people and he was chipped, but we never received any notices. Two years ago, we adopted Aja, as a tiny kitten, with an oversized personality and she acts as Cato, to Derek's Inspector Clouseau, pouncing on him and grabbing ahold of him, when he least expects it. He tolerates it up to a point, and then you hear him hiss and thump her. She's right back at it a minute later. So, my day got a lot brighter and my little buddy should be around for a while longer.
We have a sign in our house that reads:
"Saving one cat will not change the World. But for that one cat, the World will change forever."
I'm a big believer in adoptions and rescues.
and cats.
Edit-- I just realized that my accompanying picture had a broken link and didn't upload correctly... fixed now.

All of the cats we have had were adoptions and rescues, particularly black cats, as they are adopted the least. Three black cats and two beige and orange tabbies. So, lots of mini-panthers and tigers have stalked their prey, in our house. Of course, that prey comes in a bag, and gets scooped into a bowl, but the thought is there. The current duo have proven pretty good mousers, though.

So I'm going to be switching jobs here in about a week and a half. Because of certain lawsuits the State of Idaho is going to be taking over public defense from the counties on a statewide system. I've spent the last 18+ years building extremely good relations with the prosecutors, judges, clerks, etc. The dude who is coming in from the state to essentially take my job has talked to me for a total of about 15 minutes...but is supposed to be taking over in two and a half weeks with basically no clue as to what's going on.
This whole thing is going to be a gigantic cluster$@!€. The State Public Defender's office is underfunded by at least 50%, something a LOT of us have said from the start. And, frankly, I don't want to work for the state. My wife does and it's frequently a nightmare. I also don't want to switch insurances, have to deal with vacation and sick leave issues and have someone making me keep track of my hours.
So I'm switching sides again. I'll be going over to the County Prosecutor's office starting the 23rd. Same pay as I'm making now as the boss with a LOT less responsibility. I'm hopeful I can just glide through to retirement in eight (not short enough) years.
It very well could mean less time here though.

Good luck, Slam. You've got a good eye for what you do, and you won't let them sack you. I guess you'll need to starch your shirts for the new job for a while. Try not to overwork yourself and get too fried. You gotta keep it together for your kids even though they're not tots anymore. Maybe hit the gym to handle the stress and get shredded? If you like seafood, maybe go celebrate with some scallops. Regardless, I'm sure you'll smash it in the new role.
...I can't think of a stupid joke to work in au gratin. Potato joke.
Good luck!

You know something that I'm kind of sad that's kind of went away in the modern era? Comedy Albums. Absolutely loved listening to them, particularly the ones done by Adam Sandler and Garrison Keilor. Now they've just kind of faded away

Those were huge during my teenage years in the 90s. Not just the songs but the skits.

Now they've just kind of faded away I remember as a kid my brothers and I would shoot pool in the back room and listen to George Carlin's album Class Clown over and over again. Great times. I was probably way too young to be listening to it, but it also probably explains a lot of my world-view.

Best of luck, Slam_Bradley. I think it's miserable how rarely folks get to stay in one job throughout life these days, and it almost always comes down to someone somewhere being greedy and/or disinterested. I'm truly sorry for that, and yet I'm sure you'll land squarely on your feet, kick butt, and then burn the place to the ground on your last day before retirement.

Thanks for the thoughts, folks. Mostly this is going to be a good thing. It is just a bit bittersweet to see something that my former boss and I spent 19 years building begin to fall apart almost overnight. The new "boss," who hasn't even taken over yet, is already making incredibly dumb decisions. You'd think that if you were coming in to an established office you wouldn't promote people without talking to the guy who supervised them, but you'd think wrong. He made a secretary the "office manager" who I was very very close to demoting, if not firing outright. So, yeah. I get to just sit and watch it fall apart from the outside instead of getting to actively participate in it.
