I thought we could use a place to discuss all things Doctor Who, the classic series, the new series, the audio books, the comics, the Peter Cushing movies, the spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, etc. I'm interesting in reading who are peoples' favorite Doctors, favorite companions from the show and the expanded universe and general experiences with all things Whovian. As far as comics go I really enjoyed the Dave Gibbons stuff from Doctor Who Magazine that Marvel reprinted in color. IDW also reprinted some of it in black and white. Grant Morrison wrote an excellent Doctor Who story called The World Shapers featuring the Sixth Doctor, Peri, Frobisher and the Cybermen. I'd also recommend Nemesis of the Daleks featuring the Seventh Doctor. The Francesco Francavilla portraits for the Prisoners of Time covers are excellent. Titan Comics The Eleventh Doctor #1 is fun, exciting, emotionally touching, set up an interesting mystery and introduces Alice Obiefune as a very endearing companion.

Ok let's see if anyone else has heard of this or knows anything about it. Back in my ealry high school years I got big into Dr. Who when PBS was airing episodes. I bought the Marvle reprint series and some issues of Dr. Who Magazine. I also found an issue of a Dr. Who parody comic mag called Dr. What or Dr. Wha- I think (I haven't had the copy of it in about 25 years, so memory is fuzzy). It was issue 2 or 3, black and white with red tones added, magazine size (assembled to look like the bigger mag size TMNT issues that came out around then too). It was probably about the time of the early black and white boom of the 80s when everyone and their brother was putting out a comic or seven.
So I have always been curious because I never saw another issue or even another copy of that issue. Anyone else ever see these? Know how many issues were published, etc. There not on GCD and not in Overstreet last I checked.

I got into the franchise through the 2005 reboot series. Me too. In fact the first episode I watched was "The Next Doctor" with David Morrissey. I was surprised by how fun it was and started to watch as many reruns on BBCAmerica as I could. Since then I've watched the entire new series and as much of the classic series as I can find online. Dailymotion has quite a bit of classic Who available. I can't wait for the new season! Yeah the trailer for Season 8 looks outstanding!

I've watched sporadic episodes since the Christopher Eccleston season. I try to watch any episodes with Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels.
I really like David Tennant but my favorite is Matt Stone. I just loved his crazy energy and his weird detached sentimentality. And my favorite companion is Karen Gillen as Amy Pond, but it's very hard to choose as they were all (Rose, Martha, Donna, Rory, Clara) so good.
I never thought anybody would surpass Billie Piper, but Amy very quickly grew on me.
Strange to think that I had never seen Doctor Who (except for the Peter Cushing movie) until a little over a year ago when my 10-year-old nephew started watching it on Netflix. I feel like it's been part of my life for decades.

I started with Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison episodes wen I was in high school(Pertwee was airing on one PBS station, Baker and Davison on another) though my first encounter with Who was when my uncle gave me a Who novelization for Christmas when I was 8 because I liked sci-fi. It was a Pertwee Dalek story and I couldn't make heads or tails of what was going on as I knew nothing of the premise.
I watched new Who and liked Ecceston and Tennant, but couldn't stand Donna as a companion and that's pretty much when I stopped watching regularly. That said, my wife who hates classic Who is a huge fan of new Who and watches every week when its on BBC America (I'm usually working Saturday nights so miss it), but I occasionally catch episodes here and there when she watches it on DVR at a different time instead. I did like Amy as a companion, but not so much Rory at first. He grew a little more watchable, but he was hard to take at first. That said, I'll probably check out Capaldi to see he resonates wit me as the Doctor, and I am slowly watching through the first Hartnell season on Hulu now.

I also got into Doctor Who during the new revival, season three to be exact, the Martha Jones era. However, I actually did watch some episodes when I was a kid, way back around 1980 when they were airing on PBS and Tom Baker was the Doctor. As a kid, I just could not get past the special effects. I know that sounds weird - you're supposed to not care about that stuff as a kid. But poor effects bothered me as a kid, anything that seemed fake was right out for me. Nowadays as an adult, I don't care at all about the effects, so I guess I got that bit of progression backwards.
I have gone back and watched a few episodes here and there of the classic series. As a result, I have to say my favorite Doctor is the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee. He's just cool.
As far as companions, I do like Martha. Usually when I say this, people think I am nuts. I also am a big fan of Donna Noble. As for the rest of the new companions, eh, I like them all well enough I guess, but I'm not a big fan of Rose or Amy or Clara to be honest. Guess I've had enough of the plucky young girl falling for the Doctor thing. Martha at least seemed more mature, studying to be a doctor herself, not to mention walking away from it. That's an adult's choice right there. I also liked Rory, certainly better than Amy. And River Song drives me nuts. Annoying.
I'm really looking forward to having an older and potentially more serious Doctor again. I think it's time for it.

I never watched it as a kid growing up. As far as I recall, we never got it over here in Canada, or at least in Nfld, until the 80s, when I was already in my late teens or early 20s, and it never really drew my attention, even though I had seen the feature film with Peter Cushing at the theatre as a very small child and remembered liking it a lot.
But I've watched the revival since the beginning with Christopher Eccleston and consider myself a fan now. One of these days I want to go back and watch whatever is available of all the earlier seasons.
Martha was far and away my favourite of the companions in the new series until Clara came along, but I have to admit that the latter has taken over the number 1 spot for me. I blame the writers for having her fall for the Doctor - a big mistake, IMO. And I must point out that they did the same thing with Martha near the end of here time on the show. Not a fan of Rose at all. Donna was a good change of pace, though a bit loud at times, but the romantic angle still it ended up feeling obtrusive to me because they they kept harping on its absence so much.
Eccleston is probably still my favourite of the Doctors I have seen. I found the transition to Tennant jarring at first: it took me almost the whole of his first season to accept him but I very much like his version now. I didn't have nearly as much trouble adjusting to Matt Smith, perhaps because I don't think his Doctor is as different from Tennant's as both are from Eccleston's. I'm very pleased with the casting of Peter Capaldi, as I'm a big fan of his work in The Thick of It. We don't know for sure how he's going to play the Docotr yet, but it looks like he might bring a maturity and a darkness and intensity to the role that could make for an effective contrast to the light-hearted charm and eccentricity of Smith and Tennant. Also, wWatching the preview, his lean, fine-boned features reminded me a little of Peter Cushing, though they don't look alike at all in other respects.

I feel the Peter Cushing Dr. Who films are highly underrated. I can only imagine being a child at the time it was in theaters and seeing that beautiful blue TARDIS in full color for the very first time in all it's Technicolor glory. Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) isn't great but the RiffTrax version is fun. I think Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.(1966) is the much better film and the special effect still look pretty good. Plus Bernard Cribbins would appear as a companion long before he would play Wilfred Mott in the new series.

I was first exposed to Doctor Who in 1975 at the age of five and have been a fan ever since. My first Doctor was Jon Pertwee, who is probably still my favourite, although Peter Davidson is a very close second. My favourite companion was Leela. I'm really looking forward to the new Doctor, as the little I've seen indicates he may be harkening back to classic Who (and the third Doctor in particular, if the costume is anything to go by).

Did any one pick up the new comics? I have no experience with Titan so I was hesitant to buy them. Ten was good it mostly focused on the companions' family and set up the mystery. Eleven is the much stronger book though. Titan Comics The Eleventh Doctor #1 is fun, exciting, emotionally touching, set up an interesting mystery and introduces Alice Obiefune as a very endearing companion.

Being from the UK, I grew up watching Dr. Who in the late '70s and early '80s -- Tom Baker and Peter Davidson were my era. But I sort of fell out of love with the series as I got older. I have absolutely no interest in watching anything from the post-2005 reboot and only a mildly nostalgic desire to watch old episodes from when I was a kid. There's no doubt that the series and characters are iconic, especially here in the UK, but since I turned 11 or so, the Dr. just hasn't interested me, I'm afraid.
