"I always found Conway a mediocre writer - not bad, but just not in any way special. His name in the credits was never a draw for me and unless the art was exceptionally good, it could even be the deciding factor in me NOT reading a comic."
I remember when Conway mostly moved over to TV. His TV scripts were unquestionably better than his comics. So, he was doing better work, and comics fans no longer had to put up with him. To me, it was "WIN-WIN".
2 years ago, a friend and I were watching an episode of "LAW AND ORDER: SPECIAL CRIMES UNIT" (I think) and had a blast trying to figure, where is this plot going? At the end, Conway's name popped up in the credits 3 TIMES! An hour later, I posted on Martin Pasko's FB page at how it was the single BEST work I'd ever seen from Conway. An hour later, Conway-- who I didn't realize was on Pasko's list-- hit "LIKE". Made my day. I'd been able to say something NICE about a guy I generally held in contempt, and HE read it! Cool.

"I disagree about Janson's Defenders work. I thought he added a lot to Sal Buscema's breakdowns and the Giffen issues he inked and coloured were about the best Keith ever looked."
Can't help personal taste. I have always HATED Janson's work, on EVERYTHING. I never liked Giffen's art until I saw it inked by Dan Green and then the next month, Mike Royer, and then a couple months later, Chic Stone.
"Goodwin and Tuska were on Iron Man immediately prior to Conway. "
THANKS! I wasn't sure on that. Wein & Trimpe started a run, but both left after only 4 issues (typical of Len). Then it was just CHAOS for about 6 months, before perennial fill-in guy Bill Mantlo got the chance to become the regular guy. He stayed and slowly got better and better, then got even better when Tuska finally left for the last time. And then a couple months later, David Michelinie & Bob Layton had him KICKED OFF the book so they could do it instead. Sure, their work was better... but I always felt they never should have gotten on the book the way they did. Mantlo had EARNED that job. They hadn't.
"Conway never plotted or scripted Super-Villain Team-Up, although his Avengers crossed over with SVTU by Englehart's successor, Bill Mantlo."
Thanks again! I keep forgetting that one. Mantlo got on SVTU because Conway drove Englehart out of the company. Same as Wolfman getting on DR. STRANGE. Even I have trouble keeping track of ALL of it.
"Conway also created a third series, Spectacular Spider-Man."
See what I mean? PERFECT EXAMPLE!
Sometimes I wonder how the hell I do remember any of this stuff.......
