Great to have another Corto Maltese fan around here! Well like I said before (maybe in the Franco-Belge thread?), I had difficulty appreciating the first few I read. Tango, Corto in Siberia and Corto in Venice. Not that they were bad, but I found them quite confusing, with sometimes the story jumping suddenly from a panel to another, without any information on what happened. But this one was quite different, and I really enjoyed it. I borrowed it at the library and the day after I finish reading it, found it at a used book sale. (The libraries around here have a huge sale once a year were they sell their older books but the pound, so I got around 20 BD and 30 kids books for my daugther for 40$). Will definitely try to borrow the others I haven't read soon.

I've only read the volumes that IDW has translated into English, but I agree that the first volume is a very different creature than the others. I did brief reviews of the IDW volumes here if you are interested. Actually, I'd love your insight since you have now read three volumes that I have not!

I'm not great at writing review, even less in english, but I agree with what you wrote in the review for Capricorn, which applies to Siberia. Corto in Siberia felt like a succession of actions without any attempt to convey more. Of course there's always the love interest for the mysterious Corto, but the "intrigue" itself felt a bit weak. The art is always great, and I still enjoyed the books. Don't really know how to say this, but Ballad felt more like a complete story, not just a mystery too complex (Venice) or a big action scene (Siberia). I now realized that I don't remember the ones I read that much, and I should re-read them to have a better perspective after reading his masterpiece.

This does not give me much hope for continuing with the series. Considering what a presence Corto Maltese has in Europe, I'd always assumed it must get better again, but maybe it truly was just that first outing that was so magical. Thanks for all of this.

My last comics were from Essential Defenders vol.3 and Tomb of Dracula vol. 2. Before that, Essential She-Hulk vol.1- which has a lot of the groundwork for the character she became. Before that, the first volume of Yi Soon Shin #1-4. I need to retrieve the second volume from my neighbor and read it!

Sure! I'm glad I thought about it :-D I've been busy with a script for a cartoon, an interactive online story, some freelance interviews- one was with Jan Duursema, if you think peeps might find that interesting to read!
My comics reading largely reflects that I've been talking to David Anthony Kraft a lot, over the past year especially. When you can ask the writer or artist about their work, I think it's that much more interesting!

my massive read-a-thon of the Ultimate line has been a lot of fun. I decided to start with the Ultimates and the related cross over events but I fully plan on going back and reading Ultimate Spider-Man from the start too...and since they're all on Marvel Ulimited as well I think I'll try the Ultimate X-Men and FF too as I never read them when they were coming out.

Welcome to the thread! I agree Starfire was really good.. they did a great job making the cartoon version of the character work in a comic. (Of course, that was a totally different character than the one in Red Hood and the Outlaws, but I digress).
I've been resisting reading Slott turning Peter Parker into Iron Man.. not sure why, I'm sure I'll like it when I break down and get it.

June is done, and it was my least active reading month of the year to date, with only 60 comics read for the month-year to date now at 1038.
classic highlights include Jack Kirby's Forever People run, Joe Kelly's Space Ghost mini, Sensation Comics #1, HAwkman #6 and Supernatural Thrillers #3 adapting Howard's Valley of the Worm. more recent highlights were Rucka and Scott's Black Magick #1, Hernandez & Cooke's The Twilight Children, Wacky Raceland #1, and Hellboy Vol. 7: The Troll Witch and Others.
Onto July. -M

Like mrp, this was also my lowest-output reading month of the year, as I failed to crack 80 for the first time, landing at 79 (and that only because of a 15 issue read-a-thon on the last day of the month). School's out for my kids, so I am spending a lot of time running them around to activities, and I am in the process of teaching my older daughter to play Magic:The Gathering, which has inevitably sucked me backed into the game, so I have been playing online a little bit here and there, which of course takes away from reading time.
The ONLY classic comics I read in June were a long run of West Coast Avengers/Avengers West Coast, going all the way from #25 up to #90. Everything else I read was new monthly books, the best of which may have been Doctor Strange #9, the worst of which was definitely Captain America: Steve Rogers #2.

Ended the month with 84 comics read. The highlights were Kamandi 19,20, The first Avengers- Defenders war, Master Of Kung Fu 27-29 and the Geoff Johns Tenn Titans run 22,23. Also , I’m discovering Nexus for the first time even though I’ve had the complete run for over 15 years. The Mike Baron/Steve Rude team is just awesome to behold. I read House of M for the first time on Marvel Unlimited and I found it to be okay. The artist seems to be in love with Double page spreads.
