Missed this thread until just now - should have been paying attention! I plan to participate and shouldn't have any trouble coming with 12 - more likely I'll feel bad at who I'll have to leave off.
As usual with the 12 days of Christmas thread, I'm mostly looking forward to other posters' choices, learning about new things, or gaining a new perspective on stuff I've previously ignored. I'm hoping to see more than a few Europeans and other non-Americans, Undergrounds, Independents, and early newspaper strip artists, since those are some of the things I know little about.
One problem I can foresee for myself is that some of my candidates may have done their very best work in collaboration rather than solo, but that will probably affect my rankings more than the choices themselves.

Well I think my 12 is finalized and the order, we'll see.
looks like 10 men, 2 women 3 whose work first appeared outside of America, 9 whose work was for the American market 1 newspaper strip creator, 11 comic creators(though one of those appeared in newspapers as well) 4 who have done work for the big 2 that I know of, but none are best known for their big 2 work (another of whom had work collected and released by one of the big 2 but the work was not produced for them)
most of my favorite writer/artists who did primarily super-hero work found themselves missing the cut and among the honorable mentions, as did 2 of my 3 favorite strip artists. Several of the creators I might have listed as all time favorites wound up missing the cut (but mostly because the largest body of their work was done in collaboration rather than solo heavy lifting).
There's no guarantee I won't read or reread something between now and the start that reminds me how much I like the work of a particular creator and decide to alter things.
So can't wait to see what other folks come up with.

It's tough, because many of my favorite artists never wrote their own comics. John Buscema, Romita Sr. etc never , to my knowledge took the plunge into the heavy lifting world.

Did a bit more thinking and consulting of my comic collection for ideas and my initial list has swelled to about 22 possibles now, from which I'll have to choose my 12. I still have more of my collection to consult though, so that list may grow some more.

I've got my 12 nailed down. All male, eleven Americans, one Canadian, 6 comic book guys, 3 comic strip guys, one magazine cartoonist.
Cei-U! I summon my Distinguished Dozen!

I'm definitely without a doubt that no one will have #12 on my list. My Number 12 will surprise a lot of members here and I will explain my choice perfectly clear.

I fear that only one of my 12 will be in others lists... But alas, as it's Christmas time and we're supposed to surprise, I guess it's maybe alright...

I know one of mine will certainly be a controversial choice (no, it's NOT John Byrne, shax )

I'm having trouble getting 12.. tho I do have a top 6 no issue! (so need to keep thinking). I'm split pretty even between comic strips, and comic books. .and have a good mix of male and female. (no, one of mine is NOT Cathy Guisewite!

I know one of mine will certainly be a controversial choice (no, it's NOT John Byrne, shax ) I expect a raging debate on Frank Miller. Wonder if that's who you're thinking of.

Can pretty much guarantee that my #12 will only appear on my list. As I believe he only did one comic book that qualifies. Much to my dismay.

Not sure why Miller would provoke controversy. No matter what you think of his politics, he's inarguably one of the most important creators of the past three decades and has had a significant impact on the (mainstream) comics scene.
Cei-U! Did NOT pick Frankie Boy, btw!
