I think this cover epitomizes the topic this week:
"As a youngin' I used to share the colt 45 on the street corners with my friends. I'm not proud." - icctrombone
"If you are strong, be a protector. If you are smart, be a humble influencer. Strength and intelligence can be weapons, so do not wield them against the weak. That makes you a bully. Be bigger than that." - Chris Pratt
The fact that there is a Highway to Hell but only a Stairway to Heaven should tell us all we need to know about expected future traffic.
Some very nice ones have shown up already, including a couple atomic explosions that immediately occurred to me. But thankfully one of Kubert's early masterpieces remains to explode in this great contest...
I've whittled down my choices to about a dozen, but something is driving me crazy that I have to try to settle first.
It's only tangential to the contest topic, but my obsessive side is taking over and I need to see / find this....
I have searched high and low for a Jack Kirby cover (explosion less) that pictures in extreme close-up a helmeted soldier with a large bandage on his eye, and a cigarette in his mouth, too. I thought it was a cover for Battlefront or another similar 50s comic (like Battle, War, Battleground, etc.), but damned if I can find anything close to it. (Though I've found a ton of other outstanding Kirby and non-Kirby covers.) It's a pretty brutal image for its time, and I know I've seen it used as an example of the greatness of Kirby (as if any more evidence is called for).
I know I've seen this plenty of times, and perhaps it's a splash page, not a cover, but does it ring a bell with anyone?
I summon the "D'oh!" revelation, I hope.
Here it is:
You are a good man, Scott! I would expect no less from a fellow Bay Stater. Thanks so much. (Didn't realize it had an explosion back there: now I've got a baker's dozen of choices!)
