R. I. P. Guy Clark. If I were creating my personal Mount Rushmore of songwriters Clark would definitely be on there. His songs were deceptively simple, deep with a wry sense of humor. He never really had great commercial success on his own, but his songs were covered by nearly everyone.
One of my favorite songs, with the incomparable Jerry Douglas on dobro.

RIP Morley Safer, the iconic newsman and 60 Minutes correspondent passed away at age 84 today, a week after retiring from 60 Minutes. I just watched the tribute show for his retiring last weekend, and wasn't aware he was in failing health when he retired. We'v elost one of the last few truly great journalists.

Safer's reporting from Vietnam was legendary. And game-changing. Safer, brought Vietnam, warts and all, into people's homes and shaped the way the war was viewed. His 1965 report on the destruction of the village of Cam Ne was incredibly powerful.

RIP John Berry, founding member of the Beastie Boys, passed at age 52. He helped form the band, gave it it's name, but left after they recorded their first EP, going on to play with a number of other bands over the years.

RIP Alan Young, best known as Wilbur from Mr. Ed. I just got an e-mail from my brother and he was a big fan of Mr. Ed and that lovable talking horse! I loved that show too ... thanks for reporting it in the 1st place gene!

RIP Alan Young, best known as Wilbur from Mr. Ed. And also for being in George Pal's great 1960 Time Machine as well as the fairly recent sequel. And he did an excellent job as the voice of Scrooge McDuck in Duck Tales, Mickey's Christmas Carol, and maybe some other features I'm unaware of.

I met him once and he's one of the most enduring, sweet, and has a vibe about him that's makes you smile. I met him 15-20 years ago by accident at a comic book related function and he was standing there talking among his fans and I listened to him for more than a hour and it's was a fast hour and I realized that I had to leave without saying anything to him and marvel his knowledge and his warm personality at the time he spoke to all of us. I think it was at San Francisco when I met him and I have no idea what year it was. Back then, I went to San Francisco about half dozen trip for business and pleasure and I just couldn't put a finger on what year it was. Mell Lazarus is one of the great ones!

Veteran actor Burt Kwouk died on May 24th, aged 85. Deeply saddened by this, he seemed to crop up in pretty much everything sooner or later, and as a kid I loved him as Cato in the Pink Panther movies.
