it made no sense, but as a HUGE Perez fan? Zatanna's "classic" look will always be the lobster head one. Dali approves...

Yeah that's effing awful, no question. I'll have to hunt down this Maroto mini. I recently read a Conan novel he illustrated and the art was quite fine (and yes there was some nudity). Please don't read the issue 2 letter column if you do! I got a preview copy of #1 and my published comments really make me cringe now...

Now I'm going to have work out where my set has got to.... I should have kept my mouth shut! Hey, it wasn't even my preview copy. A friend who was a far more prolific letterhack than I ever aspired to be received it from editor Kim Yale, and as he had recently experienced a spiritual development that left him with a distaste for certain varieties of supernatural content, he passed it on to me, so I felt obliged to cover for him.

We need a screen shot of the letter. You know it's going to happen, might as well rip off the band aid.
BTW, which mini was this. I remember reading a Maroto Conan, but can't remember when and from what publisher.

This is the Zatanna mini from 1993. It was later in TPB as Zatanna: Come Together.

Marota did the illustrations for a number of the Conan illustrated novels with spot illustrations like this: I got a copy of that edition of Treasure of Trancios when I was in 9th grade and that was my introduction to Maroto's art. But aside from Red Sonja, I don't think he did anything except pin=ups of Howard's heroes for Marvel. -M

Conan and the Sorcerer was the one I read recently. I enjoyed it.

A nice touch about Maroto and Conan is that when Marvel adapted Andrew J. Offut's Conan the mercenary (illustrated by Maroto twenty years earlier) in Savage Sword of Conan #217-218, they got the man to draw the comic as well.

I believe he is saying that #2 of the Zatanna mini contains a letter from him, based on the preview copy of #1 that he (or rather Chris Khalaf) received.

I have to get all those Maroto books, still missing two or three. He also illustrated another Andrew Offutt book, King Dragon - though my copy has a cover by Rowena rather than Maroto, for some reason.
I think my favourite sword and sorcery comics by Maroto are the Dax stories in Warren's Eerie, really beautiful stuff.
